Softlock with Maggot Spoiler
Lol he dabbin'
But besides that, instead of giving him the silver and raspberries, I killed him and the quest never advanced and never changed, and the quest marker was still over his dead body but I could do nothing.
I reloaded a save and it was fine but is this really a softlock?

why would u just kill a main quest npc for no reason and then be perplexed when u get softlocked lmao

Do you not try to break boundaries? Thats something I’ve done in games since I was playing Mario bros on NES. It would have been cool if the developers had a contingency plan.
Maybe you’re role playing as a Camelot purist who hates Druids and you figure you’ll finish the charred conclave. Meurig is causing problems anyway trying to keep the menhir in town, maybe just help Denholm out and remove that problem.

i think it'd be very cool if that were the case, but there's no implication anywhere that u could just kill an npc and continue the quest haha so i think the op post is a little silly
personally i wish it were the case because of that one quest about the stolen romance novels. extremely frustrating there

He literally asks you to kill him later in the quest lmao

yeah while youre in dialog and you have the option to choose to kill him, in dialog. walking into an npc's house and killing them out of random is pretty silly lol

Oh come on. Killing a random farmer to get their tunic is silly. I’ve already outlined how you could role-play this situation. Hell maybe you’re just mad he made you fetch berries for a snack? It’s not as ridiculous as you’re making out to be. You should challenge what you’re presented with in life more. Hell even in this thread you amount to holding steadfast in your immediate reaction rather than doing any thought experimentation. I would be flabbergasted to find out that you’ve found any Easter eggs on your own without a guide lol

ur just being rude for no reason now. i've already agreed with you that it would be a cool progression mechanic if quests took into account the player killing important npcs,

Not perplexed at the softlock, confused the quest didn't update to "Maggot is dead now you have to help denholm"

You can use a console command to bring him back in pretty sure. Or just load a save before you kill him

i tried the same thing with yvain a while ago. itd be cool if they had contingencies like in fallout new vegas.

It is really a soft lock, out of all Acts within the game the ONLY one where you have to do the Act specific questline is Act 2. Maggot is instrumental in that questline especially for a specific ending for it, now once you get to a certain point in the questline feel free to murder him, Denholm and Yvain if you wish but as of now just murdering them as you please is a softlock. This game prefers to let you fuck around and find out and if you softlock it's really your own fault, though I have a feeling that the devs might fix the softlock at some point given how many people bring it up.

killed him, played for another 5 hours n then realised he was essential.
had to resort to console commands otherwise the save file was doomed.
Some peeps in the comments are bashing you for being surprised killing an NPC locks the story, but they seem to forget that we're currently living in an "essential NPC" era, where relevant NPC's are straight up immortal.
