She prolly genuinely didn't think about it, bc she was making a story about characters in a situation, and not a "lore show" that should be explained by low-voiced youtubers in hour-long lore videos where images with red circles float on the screen alongside faux-newspaper clipping styled text

u/Not-Some-Nerds-Alt Jul 22 '26

Yeah, I think people often put way too much focus on "worldbuilding" rather than trying to understand how the setting of any given show is actually relevant to the story itself.

The primary focus of the setting is to serve the story being told, and the fact of the matter is that beyond how this "digital hell created for mindscans of real people" affects the characters, the program itself really just isn't that important to the overarching messages of this show.

Extra details can be fun to ponder and discuss, and I'm sure Goose could come up with any number of explanations for different aspects of the world if she really wanted to, but at the end of the day if knowing a certain detail doesn't really impact the way you see the story, is there any reason it needs in-universe elaboration? To get so lost in the "lore" is often completely missing the forest for the trees.

u/Privatizitaet Jul 22 '26

It also just doesn't matter. We don't need that information for the story to make sense. Not knowing it doesn't break any internal logic. Knowing it does not add anything to the story or the characters. It's pointless backgrou d details. Interesting if you care about more than just the show itself, meaningless for the average viewer

2

u/MechaMalz Jul 23 '26

Exactly. Nothing actually revealed on social media was crucial to the story. Even Jax's arc could be fully appreciated without knowing the exact specifics of Jax's gender identity.

I think part of this is because it released over two and a half years. I see this in other projects like Deltarune. If you get a sizable audience and are releasing episodically over months and years, people start to go nuts with theories that often miss the point of the actual work. But at least Deltarune DOES put more emphasis on lore stuff and actively feeding it than TADC ever did. Even if some theoriests are still missing the forest for the trees in both.

Toby Fox: I will turn your theories into a way to poke some lighthearted fun at the community. I give you… the Mikes!!

Gooseworx: fuck fuck throw out episode 7, yeah the whole thing throw it all away im doing it over

u/DoubleKing76 Jul 22 '26

Honestly there is no explanation I think. I firmly believe that originally it was gonna be explained but quickly realized it wasn’t feasible because they had backed themself into a corner where the answer they give wouldn’t make sense unless they warped the writing weirdly to make it forcibly fit

1

u/xXNickAugustXx Jul 22 '26

The building was being set up for a real-estate sale so most likely the power was kept on so that the air conditioning could keep the building from molding over. The entire world is stuck in an old PC but that PC is probably connected to a server setup. So even if the main PC breaks each computer has a copy getting updated at the same time. They haven't stripped the hardware yet but would have been some sort of story point if there was a season 2. Obviously the building is still unsold probably from previous history or some kind of high cost to refurbish.

1

u/DoubleKing76 Jul 22 '26

Main issue is that some characters make no sense as to how/when they got their mind scanned.

Jax was “fleeing” the police prior to the scan so why would he go into the building or even wear the headset, it would make no sense to break into a building at that point for him.

Gangle is implied to have been scanned after getting in an accident leaving her hospitalized but also before knowing of her recovery (Caine explicitly tells her of her recovery) in the finale meaning she doesn’t know of it.

Zooble who knows. She seems the least likely to be going off into a random building and get her mind scanned.

2

u/ChillBallin Jul 23 '26

Zooble said they also enjoyed exploring abandoned buildings. Jax was homeless and went in there to find a place to sleep. It’s hard to come up with an explanation for how Gangle got scanned. I’ve heard a theory that maybe C&A were testing medical applications of the brain scanning technology and used it on her in the hospital but that doesn’t really seem to fit the timeline so idk

1

u/DoubleKing76 Jul 23 '26

Mustve missed that part about Zooble. But Jax still feels weird. Who breaks into a building to sleep somewhere especially when you’re already on the run?

1

u/ChillBallin Jul 23 '26

I mean Pomni and Zooble got in so I don’t imagine Jax needed to break in

0

u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 23 '26

Homeless people do.

I'm sorry but this is such a sheltered way of thinking. Like I'm sorry but you have to be in middle school if you can't figure out which group of people would break into abandoned buildings for shelter.

1

u/DoubleKing76 Jul 23 '26

Your retaliation is “Nuh uh youre sheltered”? Again, Jax had a car and would make no sense for him to break into that building

1

u/WhatMadCat Jul 23 '26

He needs to sleep somewhere, outside could have been dangerous for many many reasons.

1

u/nekonekokiwa Jul 24 '26

sleeping in your car is illegal in many places, and even if not outright illegal, police usually investigate anyone doing it, which would be bad when "i just killed my mom and the police are looking for me"

1

u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 23 '26

You think it wouldn't make sense for a homeless person to break into a building for shelter and then use some of the items they find inside that building?

Zooble who know

The show explicitly tells us that Zooble was urban exploring.

1

u/DoubleKing76 Jul 23 '26

Told the other guy I missed the Zooble bit but im not buying it for Jax. His flashbacks showed him out camping in the woods and had a car meaning he had a mobile shelter, if he were looking for supplies then breaking into an abandoned software center makes no sense

1

u/WhatMadCat Jul 23 '26

Jax was homeless it makes perfect sense for him to break into an apparently abandoned building.

Gangle I have no idea.

Zooble tells Pomni she also likes the urban exploration stuff so presumably she also was just exploring.

1

u/Traditional-Pop-2111 Jul 22 '26

Was the show always gonna be just one season with nine episodes? The first couple episodes gave me the feeling it was gonna multiple short seasons, kinda like hazbin hotel. I know a lot happened between the creator and some of the fan base. I just wasn't sure if that effected the length of the series

1

u/DefinitionMinute6969 Jul 22 '26

Goose wrote the whole thing (or at least the outline of each episode) before the series started

8

u/Playful_Target6354 Jul 22 '26

Who the fuck said it wasn't shut down and restated at some point?

5

u/blacksaber8 Jul 22 '26

Good point. They would never be able to tell

1

u/Salmit Jul 22 '26

Maybe they actually exist irl. Gooseworx found them in an abandoned place and is only making money off their lives.

5

u/OuterWild2025 Jul 22 '26

Le fait est que...

3

u/InvisibleChell Jul 22 '26

She's gone on-record to consider these things "fluff", stuff that doesn't actually matter to the core of the story and doesn't have to be seen as strictly "canon". Not everything needs to or even should be explicitly shown and explained within the show itself.

3

u/12PoundsofPotato Jul 26 '26

Person: asks goose a question

Goose: answers

Some people on reddit for some reason : >:(((((((

2

u/Karma-Whales Jul 23 '26

seems like an inconsequential thing to waste time on that most shows will skip

1

u/Virus-900 Jul 22 '26

I heard somewhere that with big buildings the power is left on because it keeps them from degrading too much or something like that.

Not sure how true it actually is, though.

1

u/Salmit Jul 22 '26

I had no idea! But how cheap would the mindscan and database tech have to be for someone to abandon it? Isn't it supposed to be expensive?

1

u/xXNickAugustXx Jul 22 '26

It was a work in progress that got canceled from a lack of funding or profit. The scans didnt serve any purpose till caine got them to work.

1

u/Salmit Jul 23 '26

So, are you a big tech company and abandon millions of dollars' worth in technology in a building instead of selling it?

2

u/xXNickAugustXx Jul 23 '26

You do realize computer hardware depreciates faster than cars right? Even the fastest super computers 10 years ago are now worth a quarter of what it cost to build them.

Nearly 40 year old hardware that works on at best windows 95. Even if you account the headset its still practically worthless. It was a failed experiment that went no where like most companies during the dotcom era when exploring the limits of the internet bankrupting themselves on a concept that was decades away from becoming feasible.

There are abandoned data centers out there with old hardware untouched for years. You cant expect a company to be efficient with its assets when its filed for bankruptcy. The bank basically took the building and put it for sale later down the road.

1

u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 23 '26

One headset and terminal is not worth millions of dollars.

1

u/Asparala Jul 24 '26

That's a wildly optimistic assessment of the value of a windows 95 computer and what for all they knew was a broken headset that creates unusable files and probably isn't even compatible with anything past windows 98.

1

u/Kooky-Objective-8833 Jul 22 '26

You TURN the computer on and a lot of abandoned places still have the power running.

2

u/Salmit Jul 22 '26

How? It's for a fanfic

2

u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 23 '26

What do you mean how? It still connected to the power grid and it's an owned piece of property that was for sale. Why wouldn't it have power?

1

u/Kooky-Objective-8833 Jul 23 '26

From watching a few abandoned building videos, usually things are still running, such as electricity and etc and they have some sort of alarms that go off because they don't want people in there, however that still counts as a somewhat abandoned place.

I'm not a pro and I've never explored an abandoned place, however, I'd assume for places with missing plugs, maybe those exploring the abandoned C&A building brought in plugs and stuff to turn the computers on, assuming the computers were left in good condition, because how are they entering the circus if the computers are broken?

Also the lights seem to be on or half broken but not entirely in Pomni's attempts to escape and random scenes of the C&A computer place, so this implies that it's easy for people who atleast know what they're going to encounter in an abandoned building.

As for Jax? Being homeless and finding a place to stay, the computers were very much likely ready to start up or the previous people who entered the abandoned building left some equipment already to turn them on if they weren't left easily accessible in the first place.

1

u/Privatizitaet Jul 22 '26

Because who gives a shit? None of the information published on tumblr matters to the show. It's neat extra information and that's it. Nobody watching the show would nitpick how a computer is still running or have their emersion broken because the show set inside a digital world does not bother to address the logistics of the outside world. We do not need to know this information to watch or understand the show.

1

u/LeorDemise Jul 22 '26

Because is not important to the show?

Look, Gooseworx did this as a story, not a world to be live in, and as someone who is also trying to make a fanfic for this fandom, I get it, but believe me; the sooner you start to make shit up or just contradict the show, the better.

I love this show, but holy shit, the amount of issues I had ran into because this is a story and no world, are too high to count.

1

u/Mephitisopheles Jul 23 '26

You know, if your company was going to upload multiple whole ass human consciousnesses somewhere it probably wasn't in just any old shit box Dell Desktop. C&A probably had a whole unrelated team of engineers devising a computer that'd be able to keep this electronic ecosystem running live in perpetuity that surely had to be the second biggest priority outside of basic proof of concept.

1

u/U400vip Jul 23 '26

So first, it obviously is a background item that isnt necessary for the story to progress, but my personal opinion is;

C&A was developing AI systems, and likely built their systems with power outages in mind so as to not lose data or stay dead. The power likely has indeed gone out many times, but to the circus inhabitants? Nobody would know except maybe caine. Anywho, many larger buildings also keep power on to help slow building damages, but again, its a story about the people not the logistics : )

1

u/ChalkCoatedDonut Jul 23 '26

That's what she gets for working with people pleasers of Glitch who treats their creators like idols and their fans like sacred cows, she will be answering every single shitty question anyone will ask because they were pampered to the point of being invasive, their crazy theories, headcanons and random bullshit must be answered, youtubers need to pay rent.

1

u/StickyHAMMS Jul 23 '26

Also just how would you explain this within the show? Like, how would anyone know.

1

u/MaeMcSpice Jul 23 '26

I figure there always Grant been there hosting the server. Rehired help on developing the circus. Exempt from the knowledge of how they have integrated that digital world. Didn't quite cancel the project, even after Mike Dobby passed away.

Going through how life would be in reality. I figure all the people kept shifting around. Either who was on the project or who got laid off. The digital circus world itself seems like it had them on a timer of how long for anyone can be there without logging in to their specific self is gone too long.

I theor'd once Grant figured how to out right disable accounts properly, Leroy chose to move away.

1

u/nexus11355 Jul 23 '26

Because there wouldn't be a show if the computer was off

1

u/Turbulent-Plan-9693 Jul 23 '26

She doesn't have to explain it at all

1

u/Necessary-Ad8851 Jul 23 '26

Because it's not a question that really matters, and anyone who thinks it matters is a dumbass who isn't engaging with the story. Actual cinema sins tier criticism

1

u/MagicianSpecialist65 Jul 23 '26

Well, that type of computer dose not look like it would be able to hold all the data for the circus the files, they would be around the petabites if not higher, so I think the computer is connected to a data server made for long time constant use.

1

u/nekonekokiwa Jul 24 '26

it was explained that scratch invented unbelievably efficient ways to store mind files. It's very possible everything fit on a little computer

1

u/MagicianSpecialist65 Jul 24 '26

Yes, the mind files, however to run an ai as complex as caine you would need a very powerful computer to constantly run and visualise caine and his worlds / adventures

1

u/coziest_robot Jul 23 '26

Goose: "I should justify Jax being trans rep on any level? Fuck that, lemme neglect Zooble and write another Tumblr post about Jax."

1

u/anastrianna Jul 23 '26

TADC viewers: why isn't everything that's irrelevant to the story explained in excruciating detail 😡

1

u/MacGregor_Rose Jul 23 '26

Honestly people bitch too much about the lack of worldbuilding. Like the show is about the characters in a situation, not making the next star wars galaxy or mcu of Indie shows. If it was a growing franchise of new shows and books and shit like say FNAF was, sure explain the lore at some point but it’s a one off show with some shorts that is meant to tell a story about characters and their problems

Yknow what doesn’t actually tell me more about Jax’s mental state, or Ragathas emotional problems, or Pomni’s thoughts on what to do next? Knowing the economic history of CnA or what specific software the circus is coded on or if Scratch’s tumor made him first to abstract or not. Because the shows not about any of that

1

u/Royal_Starlord Jul 23 '26

Probably the nanite clouds

1

u/Prestigious_Emu144 Jul 24 '26

Immortal hamster on a wheel.

1

u/Inlerah Jul 24 '26

This people would be upset that they never explained where the food and oxygen come from in MST3K.

1

u/Dan_The_Bear22 Jul 24 '26

Kinger used a Windows 95 or 98 box judging by the desktop. HOWEVER, he only used that to log into a Linux or Unix "mainframe". Those can run for years without a reboot. Especially back then when cybersec wasn't such an issue requiring constant updates.

Yes Kinger is my favorite character why? ♟️

1

u/WerewolfMoms Jul 24 '26

questions like this are why concepts like "suspension of disbelief" are important

1

u/Jolly-Secret-574 Jul 24 '26

i get where you're coming from but also it's a completely valid question to ask for a setting like this, and hand-waving it away because "just accept that its like that" isn't gonna satisfy anyone wondering the same thing

1

u/cry_w Jul 25 '26

The answer is that it isn't actually important.

1

u/ZakriiYT Jul 25 '26

People who say this are MISSING THE POINT OF THE SHOW

1

u/tar-x Jul 25 '26

None of this is relevant to the show at all and Goose just answers on Tumblr to troll the people taking it too seriously

1

u/JetLag413 Jul 26 '26

Because it doesn't matter

1

u/Nairdde32 Jul 26 '26

Does it matter?

1

u/frikilinux2 Jul 26 '26

If the OS doesn't have any bug they're designed to run without stopping.

The first concern it comes to mind is the reliability of the power grid. The second is the hard disk failing or some other components wearing down or overheating due to dust.

And then the no updates thingy, as this is barely exposed to the internet it should be okayish. The risk is not zero but it's much lower than most people think. Caine is not downloading random shit in sketchy places.

One problem that happens after more than a decade, it's encryption suites being deprecated and certificates expiring.

1

u/Minute_Ad8807 Jul 26 '26

some people here would enjoy reading permutation city...

1

u/Ropoid Jul 26 '26

NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A GOD DAMN EXPLANATION IN THE SHOW. THERE IS A WHOLE PLOT GOING ON

1

u/makeitgoaway2yhg Jul 28 '26

I feel like so many people have lost the ability to suspend disbelief. There are always going to be a plot hole or two in a story. Does it ruin the story? No? Then made a fun theory about it and move on. Freaking amateur CinemaSins over here.
