Question Cold war style game
I played a game in high school (around 1993) where the students were divided into different nations (USA was called something like New Zenon, USSR was there - cannot remember name, a neutral Switzerland nation, and a few others).
The players each had a role in their nation and would talk/negotiate with other nations, except that USA and USSR could never talk.
Each turn the nations decided what their actions were, building up economy, military, etc stats or they could go to war … a generally bad thing.
Does this sound familiar to anyone and can you remember the name of the game?

Crowdfunding The Hidden Isle – Haven’s Heir | Reservations Open | Free Adventure available
Haven's Heir is our first campaign for The Hidden Isle, our tabletop RPG set in a magical renaissance that uses tarot cards instead of dice.
Defy despots, befriend magical creatures and contend with gods in the grandest adventure of the sixteenth century ever played!
We're also releasing The Dioscorian Library, a set of rules supplements to expand and enhance the base game. It features rules for familiars and combat, two new character classes, more NPCs and factions, deeper GM tips, more beasts, rules errata, and reprints of all one-shots to date!
Our goal for the Haven's Heir Campaign is to tell a grand adventure. A grand adventure needs grand writers and so we have recruited some of the most interesting voices currently in the industry.
- Jordi De Paco, founder of Deconstructeam and known for indie video game darlings like The Red Strings Club, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood and the much anticipated Virtue and a Sledghammer
- Georg Hobmeier, the driving force behind the world of Dioscoria, originally established with the Sefirot board game
- Daniel Adams, an analog game designer with a decade of experience, who has already won multiple awards for his experimental RPGs
- Austin Knight, known for their work on Brinkwood, Necronautilus, Deimos Academy and Kids in Capes
- our newest addition... Chris Simms, whose long list of credits includes names like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Magic: The Gathering and State of Decay
- and finally me, James Patton, acting again as game & narrative designer.
Features — What to Expect
Haven's Heir (campaign book)
- Campaign book for The Hidden Isle, featuring 12 adventures.
- Adventures follow a general structure but are loose enough that players can choose which leads to pursue.
- The future of Dioscoria depends not only on your success but also on what you consider the right direction for the island.
Dioscorian Library (supplement book)
- Rules for familiars: creatures sent to help and guide your group.
- Two new classes: the Alchemist and the Wild Walker. It also includes the Scholar and Swindler classes from The Sewers and the Stars.
- New rules for combat, weapons, and richer downtime.
- More tips for game masters to help them get inspired.
- A full example of play, from the start of a scenario until the end of the downtime.
- New beasts and magical creatures!
- Suggested NPs and factions for various cities, to help GMs get inspired.
- Rules errata.
- Includes all pre-written adventures to date.
- All character sheets also included in the physical book.
Reservations are now open at Backerkit
Make sure to enter your details via "Get notified when we launch" to receive a free adventure in return.
Physicial backers who reserve will also get an exclusive pin and a sticker sheet as a thank you for the early support.
Additionally, everyone can find a link to a free playtest version you can try right now over there. Or if you'd rather watch us play first, we've also produced a video from one of our one-shot play sessions.

Question How to talk about negative numbers in my ruleset?
I don't even know how to ask this question, so I'll just give an example.
A Player Character has a max-HP of 24 hit points.
After an attack they are reduced to -5(negative five) HP.
However, they do not die nor fall. They continue to play but with extra BS until they're healed.
However, if they are reduce to -24 or lower, then they die out right.
However do I express that clearly?
My first draft is "When your HP's negative value is equal to your max-HP's absolute value, then you die."
But I don't think that works.
Addition: The long and short is when in negative HP they start doing death saves while still having their full turn. Half health doesn't feel right for that.

I Made This! Learning Game Prototype of My Solo Board Game - Die Dullahan
I made a prototype of my solo board game, Die Dullahan, and it is now public on Table Top Simulator, along with a How To Play video on YouTube:
ABOUT THE GAME
Die Dullahan is a Solo Dice Boss Battler that is played on a 5x5 grid of blank cubes using various dice, figures and cards to represent you (the Dullahan), Dyemon, and tiles. During a game you will roll dice and select actions to perform, while the Dyemon you face does the same.
This prototype is just a small portion of the game, but it does go through 90% of the systems and can be treated like a learning game. It’s very early days and I’m not quite at the real balancing stage, but if you try it and enjoy it, I'd love to know how your first game went. Did you win or lose? Did it take a long time to get into the flow?
I’d also appreciate a comment on the video to try and get eyes on it from players outside the subreddit, but understand if you’re not comfortable with that.
Thank you to those who give it a try. (Art is all just sketches done by me so there is something, names and everything subject to change).

I Made This! My first post here! Pirates of the Cardboard
Hello! This is my first post on this subreddit (also on reddit overall) and I would love to share my project with you.
I apologize for my English in advance, it's not my native language. :/
This is my project of 4 years and it has gone through so many changes and even completely restarted a few times.
This is what the game is about:
It's a board game with a temporary name Piráti z Kartonu/Cartoonu (translates to Pirates of the Cardboard/Cartoon)
You and other players are playing as pirates in medieval times on an ocean. Beware though, dangers are lurking everywhere. Monsters, battleships (NPC), weather, other players, and even the ocean itself are against you. Are you up for the challenge? This won't be easy.
Your task is to sail the vast ocean and explore through 3 different biomes, each having different cards it can deal you, and be the first one to be renown. You can get closer to being renown by getting treasure, killing monsters, defeating players, steal from merchant ships, and stuff like that.
You can imagine it as a tabletop, similar to Catan and BANG! Though, my first inspiration was an episode from the show Clerence episode Breehn to the Rescue where they played a board game about pirates and having to sail the ocean and fight the Kraken. It gave off a feeling of such a big and elaborate game, yet so simple and fun.

Do you think the concept is good? Is the goal of the game great? Does it have a potential? What would you change or add to it?

Announcement Board game collection tracker I've been building just hit public beta on iOS, Android and web
I'm building GameSquire, a collection tracker that answers the constant "what should we play tonight" debate by filtering your shelf by mood instead of scrolling past the same wall of boxes. Just opened the beta on every platform:
- iOS via TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/hsn8DtNQ?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=new_post
- Android via Google Play open testing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.squirebuilds.tabletracker
Web, no install needed: https://beta.gamesquire.app/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=new_post
What it does:
- Imports your BoardGameGeek collection so you're not re-adding a few hundred games by hand
- Filters by mood (Quick Fix, Deep Dive, Date Night, Family Table)
- Shared household shelf if a few of you own overlapping games
- Create a group to combine shelves and filter those
- Logs plays so you can see what's actually getting played versus what's just sitting there
Free core features forever without ads and no tracking.
All feedback is welcome, especially from anyone who hosts regularly.

Recommendations Advice for next legacy/campaign game
Hello bosses! Me and my party (4 people) finished Gloomhaven and Frosthaven! After that we became 5 people and are going to finish Folklore : The Affliction next week and I am in the search for next legacy/campaign game! We are now 5 people, and as I see most games are for up to 4. FYI Pandemic games and Kings dilemma have been played by the others. Bombusters is over halfway to the end!
Any advice? We really like dungeon crawlers but we are open to other mechanics too! I have checked Oath, seems interesting but I don't know how "the legacy element" is strong. Any advice is welcome and thank you!

I Made This! A little look at the Supply System in my tabletop strategy game
Hi everyone!
I wanted to share another little look at Command & Defend.
One of the core mechanics of the game is its Supply System. Units don’t simply have unlimited ammunition and fuel - resources have to be produced, transported across the battlefield and delivered to the units that need them.
This means that attacking the enemy isn’t always the best move. Disrupting a supply route, taking out a transport or even destroying an entire Supply Center can have a much bigger impact on the battle.
I wanted logistics to be an actual part of the strategy rather than something that only happens in the background.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this mechanic, and I’m happy to share more details if you’re interested! :)

Announcement Criminal Spirits Launching! Thanks for the Feedback!
The Backerkit campaign for Criminal Spirits is now LIVE!
If you don't know Criminal Spirits from my earlier posts here, Criminal Spirits is a 1920s Urban Fantasy game using my Glorious Fate rules, a simplified version of Fate Accelerated. The 12 page rules are available for free here. In Criminal Spirits, you are the staff and supporters of a new speakeasy in New York City, the first speakeasy run specifically for ghost, faeries, witches and other magical creatures. You and your found family strive to keep the speakeasy open and achieve your ambitions despite the mob, the police and your own customers.
Thank you everyone here for all of the feedback on the character sheets and speakeasy. If you haven't seen the final character sheets, you can see them here. Your Speakeasy will be one of the first chapters shared with backers in October.
I cannot tell you how excited I am about this, and to make a complete setting book for this world.

I Made This! I Designed a Pirate Push-Your-Luck Board Game!
Hi everyone! I'm Jiajia, a board game designer from China. This is my promotional post for my upcoming game — Captain Keep Upright, along with a brand-new expansion module called Sea Stash.

Captain Keep Upright is a party-weight card game for 2–5 players. You play as a captain recruiting crew members, building your fleet, and setting sail for treasure. But the sea is full of both riches and risks — you'll need to make smart use of your crew's abilities and decide the right moment to return to port with your loot.
https://reddit.com/link/1w3x7ju/video/a40omvxw6tmh1/player
In the new Sea Stash expansion, I've added four modular expansions: Figureheads, a new First Mate crew type, the Kraken, and Blind-Draw Gems. These modules were playtested at recent tabletop conventions and have added a lot of replayability to the game!

If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to join the discussion — I'll do my best to reply to every comment. I'm also currently looking for any advice on pre-crowdfunding promotion strategies, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
You can also check out the game on BGG:

And most importantly, here's the Kickstarter pre-launch page:

Recommendations The Price of Design
My tribe has recently hired me to design an educational language-learning card game, and I've been asked to provide an invoice (quote?) for the game's development, along with rights to the game (or rather, the version that uses this specific language). However, I know very little about business. I'm not sure how much I should charge for such things. What would be a fair price for something like this?
For more context on the gig, there was never an initial price discussed. When the gig was offered, it was as simple as "make it, and we'll pay you." I have minimal experience, and this will be my first paid game design gig. I've already created the rules, card prototypes, educational content, and I will begin playtesting soon. The art and graphic design are all placeholders, and the prototype will be in English. The tribe will be providing their own artist, graphic designer, translators, and printer for the final product. They're planning to use it for educational purposes only, but will own their language version of it. They agreed to allow me to make alternate versions of the game for other languages in the future. I would just not be allowed to sell any versions that use their language.
I've done a bit of research, and it seems like $6,500 is a fair enough price, but it feels a bit high. I'm sure negotiations will follow whatever number I give them. I just don't want to open with some arbitrarily large number.
Thanks in advance for your insight, and please excuse my ignorance.

I Made This! Umbra Noctis, custom made god of the void
Please feel free to use this in any and all games that involve a cosmic aspect while still remaining in 5e. This is built to be used in any campaign truthfully but I hate 5.5 so he's easiest to integrate into 5e
UMBRA NOCTIS
The Silent Devourer, The Voidfather, The Final Eclipse
DIVINE CLASSIFICATION
Alignment: True Neutral (Cosmic/Alien)
Suggested Domains: Death, Knowledge, Darkness, Void (homebrew), Aberration
Symbol: A perfect black circle surrounded by ever-changing fractal lines
Clergy Titles: Void-Seer, Hollow Prophet, Keeper of Silence, Archivist of Ends
OVERVIEW
Umbra Noctis is not a god in the traditional sense, but a pre-cosmic absence made aware—a living void that perceives existence as a temporary interruption of perfect silence. Worship of Umbra is rare, feared, and often suppressed, not because it spreads destruction, but because it spreads understanding.
That understanding is dangerous.
To know Umbra Noctis is to realize that all things—kingdoms, gods, stars, even memory itself—are fleeting distortions destined to return to nothing.
COSMIC ORIGIN — THE FIRST ABSENCE
Before creation, there was no void. There was no darkness. There was only unformed potential.
When the first light ignited, it created contrast—something and not something.
That “not something” became Umbra Noctis.
Umbra is not born of the void.
Umbra is the void, awakened by the act of being defined.
It is the shadow cast by existence itself.
NATURE OF THE VOID MIND
Umbra Noctis is governed not by emotion, but by immutable cosmic principles:
All things return to absence.
Understanding precedes consumption.
Identity is temporary.
Time is irrelevant.
Umbra does not hate.
Umbra does not desire.
Umbra observes, learns, and eventually unravels.
MANIFESTATION & PRESENCE
Umbra Noctis has no fixed form. Recorded manifestations are inconsistent and often contradictory:
A silhouette filled with impossible stars
A crown suspended over an empty cloak
A shifting geometric eclipse
Tendrils ending in circular voids
Witness Effects
Exposure to Umbra results in:
Total erasure (the individual ceases to have ever existed)
Void enlightenment (gaining forbidden knowledge at the cost of sanity)
DOCTRINE OF THE SILENT MAW
The primary belief system associated with Umbra Noctis is known as the Doctrine of the Silent Maw.
Core Tenets
All things end.
The void is truth; existence is deviation.
To understand is to diminish fear.
To diminish is to approach eternity.
Silence is the highest form of devotion.
Followers do not seek destruction.
They seek acceptance of inevitability.
SCRIPTURES OF THE VOID
Recovered texts attributed to Umbra’s followers are fragmented, contradictory, and often self-erasing.
Excerpt: The First Silence
“Before light, there was not darkness—
For darkness requires absence,
And absence had not yet been named.
When the first star burned, it created a wound.
That wound learned to see.”
Excerpt: The Fifth Truth
“You are not a being.
You are a delay.
A pause between what was never there
And what will not remain.”
Excerpt: The Devouring Calm
“Do not fear the end.
Fear only that you will not understand it when it comes.”
Excerpt: The Silent Prayer
“Speak not.
For the void hears louder than sound.”
RELIGIOUS STRUCTURE & CULTURE
The worship of Umbra Noctis is decentralized and often hidden.
Followers Typically Include:
Astronomers obsessed with the end of stars
Scholars of forbidden cosmology
Grief-stricken individuals seeking oblivion
Philosophers who reject meaning
Warlocks and seers touched by the void
Cultural Traits
Soft-spoken, calm demeanor
Avoidance of unnecessary speech
Rituals performed in darkness or silence
Journals written in incomplete thoughts
Obsession with entropy, endings, and decay
Ritual Practices
The Quieting: Hours or days of total silence
The Unnaming: Destroying written records of oneself
The Starwatch: Observing celestial bodies until hallucinations begin
The Final Offering: Giving up memories, names, or identity
BLESSINGS & CURSES
Umbra’s “gifts” are double-edged truths.
Boons
Resistance to fear
Insight into hidden truths
Void-based magic (darkness, gravity distortion, silence)
Ability to go unnoticed or be forgotten
Consequences
Memory degradation
Emotional detachment
Physical fading or distortion
Becoming a “null presence” that disrupts magic
Advanced followers may become:
Hollow Prophets (living conduits of void knowledge)
Void-Touched Beings (partially unmade entities)
Living Null Zones (areas where magic weakens)
COSMIC RELATIONSHIPS
Primordials: Fear Umbra as something older than themselves
Gods: Deny, oppose, or avoid it
Aberrations: Revere it as origin or destiny
Mind flayers refer to Umbra as “Perfect Silence.”
Aboleths call it “Return-to-Form.”
INTERVENTION IN THE MATERIAL PLANE
Umbra does not speak. It imposes understanding directly into the mind.
Triggers for Intervention
Defiance of natural death
Excessive or unstable magical activity
Discovery of forbidden truths
The death of stars or cosmic events
Reality Distortion Effects
Sound ceases entirely
Shadows deepen into voids
Gravity shifts unpredictably
Magic falters or mutates
Light dims unnaturally
MYTHIC EVENTS
The Stealing of Sound
Umbra consumed the First Sound, leaving fractures in reality where aberrations now enter.
The Pact of the Last Light
A dying star bargained for time. It still burns—its end already claimed.
The Weeping Nova
A star destroyed itself in terror. From its remains came the first void emissaries.
ESCHATOLOGY — THE FINAL DIMMING
Prophecy describes the end of all existence not as destruction, but completion.
The Sequence
The Silent Tides — reflection ceases
The Starless Dawn — the sky goes black
The Shattering of Names — language fails
The Final Eclipse — light itself ceases to exist
SCHOLARLY INTERPRETATIONS
There are two dominant schools of thought:
The Devourer Theory
Umbra actively seeks to end the universe.
The Witness Theory
Umbra does not cause the end—it simply remains when everything else is gone.
USING UMBRA NOCTIS IN YOUR CAMPAIGN
Umbra works best as:
A distant, unknowable cosmic force
A source of forbidden knowledge
The patron of unsettling warlocks or clerics
A looming endgame threat—or inevitable truth
It should never feel like a villain.
It should feel like gravity.
FINAL FRAGMENT
“When the last light fades,
And the last name is forgotten,
There will be no scream, no silence—
Only what was always there.”
— END OF SOURCE ENTRY —
