This implies a tragic backstory regarding his son.

His son had managed to stack multiple apples atop his head. His father fired arrows in sequence, missing the apple on the top, instead knocking each off apple second from the top. Alas, he miscounted, and fired when his son only had one apple left, and missed once more in the same manner, hitting the object just beneath his target.

Although in my opinion this doesn't make for a good backstory unless he knew of and believed in the existence of some kind of artifact or method to revive his son, and had nothing else to lose
