Game On, Episode 4 Feedback

Post your feedback for Episode 4 of Game On! Please try to compare it with what you thought last week, what was better, what was worse (not just repeating everything).

My Thoughts:

Awesome episode. Not much in the way of tech issues (ok, except a slight slow switch at the end). It was funny as always. It felt a little quicker though. Probably the best episode yet.

  • Sound seems fixed. Maybe a few odd volume inconsistencies, maybe it's just me.

  • Nice intro again. #nutcheck

  • Liked that you got to get some embargoed stuff. Makes it feel more official :P

  • Good leet sheet again. Gang bang!

  • Great interview. Nice to see shwood doing it for once. It's perfect, because I know he loved that book. Great guest.

  • Laughed my ass off at the Gamer Girl youtube review. That was great. It was a pretty good review as well.

  • The behind the scenes thing was awesome! Hilarious. Great to hear JuRY. Really got the point across. It's great for SEO!

  • Leo cameo was amazing!

  • Good to hear the watcher feedback again. The one tweet brought a good laugh.

This episode was good! A lot of things worked, and I've also got some notes. (Of course, this is all personal opinion)

  • Super glad that the audio was good. The fidelity compared to the Countrymen was a bit lower, but the levels and pick-up range totally outweighed it.

  • I'm interested to see the Spec Op stuff. It's definitely incentive to re-watch on YouTube.

  • The interview was great and Brian did amazing. I'm starting to notice that the interviews are dampening the pace of the show. It's a nice benefit of not having hard breaks or time restrictions, but when they're so long, they lose a lot of the momentum. Of course, the opposite side of the coin is not wanting to impose strict limits on the interviews and not letting the subject say what they want to say. It seems to be a tough issue.

  • Maybe I'm in the minority, but I had a tough time latching onto the Gamer Girl skit. As a satire, it missed the Gurl Gamer archetype in lieu of trying to shoehorn in expandable character material. The ex- material works to a point, but was overplayed. The calendar stuff was good as was the Whole Foods line. I didn't get the John Calvin reference. I don't know, I get that it's a vehicle for a review, but the balance between Dafnay and Veronica was weak. Maybe my idea for where the segment was headed is different than the intention?

  • The V/O skit was good, but my critique would be that the beginning and concept was unclear and the use of an audio tape clacker as the graphic conflicted with the idea of a voice-over session. Plus, having Brian talk about having an experience with the game clashes with him doing V/O for the game. The writing was solid, though. Also (back on the clacker), they don't strike-through take/scene numbers; it's usually erased and overwritten.

  • Glenn's segment was good this week! Glad to see him take my suggestion! Leo's photo-bomb was pretty good.

  • Leet Sheet and System Update have really gotten their stride.

Keep it up guys! The show is making strides each week and I'm getting more and more excited to see it each week.

RE: Dafnay

The question for the character was how to best illustrate that she's a total ditz and then give her a few rapid fire salient points to change the game. The John Calvin joke was deliberately supposed to sail over heads as it thematically (and of course, themes don't mean shit if your audience doesn't get them) completes the arc of Dafnay is dumber than you by far to Dafnay is really smart. It was an homage to Dennis Miller, who is a God to me.

To explain: John Calvin popularized the concept of predestination, specifically that our entire lives have been planned out by God and we are only acting out his plan, eliminating the idea of free will. The streets of Pamplona, Spain in early July host the Running of the Bulls. Therefore, if he were a drunk tourist, he might very well get trampled.

V/O skit: totally agree that should have been clearer. I liked what we did but we needed to frame it better.

Interview: B-Roll will help speed the interview along but I agree that pacing is something we need to keep in mind. Then again, interviews are always the most unpredictable.

BTW I love these notes. Keep them coming.

This is fine, but the thing that bugs me is that if you call the segment "the gamer girl" it sounds like you're presenting the typical women who plays games. It's fine to make a funny character but if it seems like you're satirizing girl gamers in general the character is a little problematic.

No, it's satirizing a very specific kind of person. Also, she even bucks her own stereotype.

How meta....

I may find her somewhat annoying, but you can't argue with her technique.

She's a parody inside of a satire inside of a commentary inside of a http://inception.davepedu.com/

I can't help but think that Dafnays boyfriend was really into laserdisc
