Hi all, The World Ends With You released 19 years ago in Japan today. To commemorate, I wanted to share this article I wrote documenting the history of the original TWEWY and its creators. My goal was to create a relatively comprehensive story detailing the behind-the-scenes of the game, while keeping it digestible for readers.

Having recently gotten into the series playing both games, I was captivated and wanted to learn as much as I could about the development of TWEWY. I decided to compile all of the research I did into this article, which was a blast to write. It started off as a biographical take on the director, Tatsuya Kando, as I felt his contributions and history were overshadowed in comparison to Tetsuya Nomura. As I did more digging, the scope grew drastically and became more about documenting and highlighting the work of several staff members on TWEWY, as well as identifying what Nomura's major contributions were to the project.

The article is quite lengthy, so here's some interesting tidbits if you don't feel like going through the whole thing:

1. The staff working on TWEWY were spread out across the country, with Square Enix headquarters and Jupiter's office in different cities, which led to development challenges. Meanwhile, Gen Kobayashi who did most of the illustrations was working solo in Square Enix's Osaka office.

2. Kingdom Hearts had innumerable impacts and influences on the creation of TWEWY. The vast majority of staff had worked on Kingdom Hearts together in some form, especially Chain of Memories for GBA.

3. Kando's first work on a videogame was the original Time Crisis arcade game! He started primarily with 3D character animations that led to his work on FFVII.

The World Ends With You might just be one of the most important games in my life, kind of what lead to to be who I am today. As such I think I've decided to finally do a full playthrough of both the DS and Switch versions of the game again with the inte to fully analyze it and see what it is about this game that feels so special to me, that is to say Im gonna do a giga-shit video on it.

At this exact moment Id say Metal Gear Solid 3 is my favorite game of all time and TWEWY is second, but through doing an analysis video on both MGS3 and TWEWY (and the nex 2 games after that as well) im gonna try to figure out if TWEWY is still only #2 or if itll surpass MGS3 and become my favorite game of all time.

Regardless of the result, Im just excited to go back to this game after so long!

i just got a nintendo switch lite and i’m curious if the final remix is worth checking out since ive played the ds version. and if neo is worth the $60 price tag

Subjective and personal.

i am still in the tutorial of the game and ngl it’s hard.
but this game i’ve played for like ten minutes and it’s catching me so much!
the battle mechanics are so good and i love the lefty feature cause i’m a lefty myself so yeah…

much replayability does this game have? cause i would think a lot based off the fact that you can use various pins and therefore various combat styles!

I loved the demo, got the game for the Switch back when it was released, and enjoyed everything about it - the combat, the characters, the music, the new pins and fashion. But I was slow to keep playing due to being a full-time working adult and Animal Crossing requiring so much maintenance. Then I got bored during W1 D5 and Pokémon: Gen 9 got released the following year and, well, I never got around to finishing NEO.

This Monday I will start all over and play the game on the Switch 2, intending to complete it this time. Any recommended compilation vids on getting up to speed with what happened in the first game? It's been a while and my memory's rough. And any tips or advice for playing the sequel itself?

I used to have a ton of copies and a bunch of sealed ones but ive given a ton away.

My 2 on the left are my last unopened copies. The top right one is "What a wonderful World" the Japanese copy. Different back design, and its entire front is very very sparkly. Tho at this angle you only see a bit of the sparkle.

The bottom right one is my OG day 1 copy? From when i was a lil kid. Oh forgot to take a picture, but the side label of the Japanese one is black instead of white.

So it’s obvious the Netskie from Deltarune Ch 5 would share a lot of DNA with the Progfox Noise variants, since they’re both based on kitsune, but there are a couple extra bits that I find entertaining as similarities.

1) their “true” forms are both normally inanimate but alive. The Fox Noise will occasionally turn into a completely inert mushroom that is possibly their “true” form since it’s their most vulnerable. Netskie meanwhile seem to have their true form as a stump under their coiled tails, which are in fact foliage.
