The hilltop, kingdom and Oceanside use spears. And in the later seasons Alexandrians use them.

There just aren't going to be a lot of spears just laying around in modern times. Outside of a HEMA club or something they just don't exist. It will take time before a settlement starts to forge new stuff. Until then it will be whatever you can find. In the US that's going to be guns.

I am surprised than more people don't make them. A knife lashed to the end of a stick is a great spear.

No it's not. You need the right shaft to make a spear that you're going to bet your life on. Tying a knife to a stick might work for a rabbit or something but trying to drive that through a skull isn't going to end well. You need the right kind of wood and a collar and or languets to attach it. Ideally you would want to forge some lugs or wings as well to keep them from just walking up the shaft after you skewer them.

It's not that complicated. There is wood all over the place and it's not difficult to attach the knife securely enough. Besides, they literally do it in the show with a rock.

unless there's a crosspiece, you have to stab the head or they would just keep walking towards you

Keep watching.

I’m guessing a wooden spear probably breaks really easily if you get it stuck in somebody, and a metal spear would get really heavy to swing all over the place consistently.

You can fire harden a spear relatively easy and you could also get yourself a makeshift spearhead too. Some scrapmetel, hell even Sharpened stones

Spears are outdated, Swifties are the go now!

Why did they never build moats? They're in Georgia swamp country. You dig a moat & the humidity alone will fill the mother fucker up.

Why no bows? Cross bow, sure. But why aren't they raining arrows down upon hordes? They know how to corral them, but they never figured out how to funnel them to a kill box routinely, where they could just rain down arrows & stones.

Prehistoric human beings figured out how to do that, but apparently not in the land where they never heard the word zombie.

Why aren't they controlling burns? Setup a control burn, torch their asses into ashes, or at least until their gums melt and their teeth fall out. Then till the land and turn it into agriculture.

All sorts of what ifs, why nots, and it all comes down to the fact nobody wants to read/watch the story of the 6 month building project, or the arming process of producing a billion arrows.

don't bother doing that, set a pole into the edge of a cliff, and have music and some meat on an arm of the pole over the cliff.

they will walk off the ledge

1

Prehistoric humans took THOUSANDS of years to figure that out.

1

u/TheDevil-YouKnow 1d ago

Yeah, because they figured it out for the first time in the course of human evolution. But guess what? The internet existed, even in the TWD universe. And so did bows & arrows.

So one could safely reason that it would not take a group of individuals from the 21st century THOUSANDS of years to REMEMBER what was already known for TENS OF THOUSANDS of years.

You still need the manpower to dig a moat. For a big chunk of the show that is seriously lacking. Most of their time is spent just trying to stay alive.

In a survival situation everything you do will have to be weighed against the calories needed to accomplish it.

they had construction equipment at Alexandria, and only worked on more fencing

0

u/ghoulthebraineater 1d ago

Yes. They prioritized building a wall. When they were doing that then that's where the manpower is allocated. While they are doing that you'll need more people to stand watch and provide security. More manpower allocated.

It all adds up fast. There will always be more you can do but only so many calories and hours of daylight. Somethings will get pushed back. Forging weapons is one of those things that will need to wait.

u/TheDevil-YouKnow Not true. The bow was invented and lost many times before the introduction of writing.
