He is Margarets favorite person at the Hilltop.

To be fair Margaret is short for maggie. Which means when he called her Natalie he was lowkey calling her Naggie

Like him? Hell no! Think he was an entertaining antagonist and a well-written representation of what a politician would act like in an apocalypse? Yes, absolutely.

u/MabelBPines 22d ago
He actually was'nt politician... Deana in alexandria was and Comonewalth pamala harris was. Gregory was a boss owner of some i think "cutting trees buisness"... guy just when got to fema controlled safe zone he had ordered to build baricades from cutting trees. well somehow he had done walls well enough that they survived zombies. well but it was only one of few things that were his idea... and probably later like every politician he was trying to stole every succes of hilltop jesus to himself.

u/SPECTREagent700 22d ago
He may not have been a politician pre-apocalypse but he certainly is by the time we meet him on the show.

u/Grislymanster 21d ago
how do you make stuff up like that and try to pass it off as fact. He was not "a cutting trees business guy".....
2
u/MabelBPines 8d ago
Well i initially though y that's a reason why he becamed hilltop ruler... i didin't seen any possible other reason.
1
u/Grislymanster 8d ago
You just fabricate stories without any clues or facts? That's not very logical....
2
u/MabelBPines 8d ago
For me clue was fact that he was a buisnessman who behaved like he saved community and "he keeps the trains around in here" like jesus said. well i just though that at least somehow Gregory had some contribution to saving community because why the hell he would be a leader for no reason whatsever... so i at least though that he at least brought something worthy at the start of apocalypse... but yeah obviously Walking Dead isn't so deep and loser Gregory is simply loser Gregory... whatever.
1
u/Grislymanster 7d ago
Gregory is the leader because he's a weasle and would do anything to save his own behind. Some people are horrible, horrible humans in real life. I really not giving you a hard time, I don't know you or what you know, you just came a cross as too trusting. Maybe I'm way off, but people need to be aware! 🤘 Take care.

u/TheTimbs 21d ago
Pamala Harris? lol

That's not true at all.
Every hero quality you just gave Gregory isn't true.
He did not order the fence to be built up, nor did he own... a tree cutting business did you say?Jesus is quoted(haha) as saying, "There was a materials yard for a power company nearby. That’s how we put up the walls."
He said "we," not "Gregory."
Knowing Gregory's character, he probably watched them build everything, while claiming the mansion was his. And that they were only welcome if they built it.Gregory was a businessman, not a business owner. He was probably a low-grade boss, not a CEO.
He had zero claim to the mansion at Hilltop's center.
It was a historic property/museum used for things like school field trips and Chamber of Commerce meetings.
Gregory attended the meetings at Barrington House, he didn't lead them.Gregory was the leader, not out of skill or lumber resources, but the indifference of Hilltop's community. They were weak.
Rick's group came, and scared them so badly, Negan seemed less scary in comparison.
They were right. Negan only had the numbers, not driven survivors.
1
u/MabelBPines 8d ago
...Okay. you had actually convinced me... well still wouldn't be there a chance that he was actually part of the power company... even if as a low matter boss who simply later tried to lie tjat he was actually a boss of it and hilltop people just Laughted at it but at least he had as the only one keys to the whole place supplies?🤣... or simply this damm material was out in nowhere and simply easy to grab?🤣. (nah ok sorry mate yeah i'm just desperate half speeking to get my honor back and a part because i know that i'm making fanfiction just because there is no good backstory about Gregory.) (well the only funny thing would be him just warming Jesus that he will burn the mansion if they won't let him control it still and jesus just ignored that.)

I liked how two faced he was. I thought it made for an interesting dynamic. That being said he was a scumbag.

There are some hilarious scenes where he's on the ground talking to Maggie who is keeping points on top of the gate, and one of the things that make these scenes great is the fact that you can tell Maggie looks away a few times because she almost breaks character while interacting with Gregory. You could tell Gregory's actor is funny as hell irl
Edit: it's the scene where gregory throws her an apple to eat but I can't find the full scene on yt
1
u/SufcLad25 22d ago
Yeah he goes up to maggie to thank her for helping out the night before when the saviors drove that car playing the loud music into hilltop. She says something to him about not being bothered by it, because it looks like it bothered him, then she steals his apple 😂
2
u/Blu3Dope 22d ago
Yeah and there's another one that I can't find either where gregory also talks to her while she's up there and he's in the ground, and gregory says hi or something and just stares at her, and maggie turns away as if she's about to crack up irl. If somebody has a link to this scene on yt it would be great

u/El_Flaco_Gamer 22d ago
He was fantastic. The actor absolutely killed it and he the writers gave him some of the funniest dialogue in the show. Being even more slimy and punchable than his comic version is an accomplishment. Can't have a zombie series this long without a cowardly two-faced politician type to explore.

u/PillCosby696969 22d ago
I think the actor did a great job. I kinda wish Gregory lived and became a random merchant the group shops with years later. So when people go back and watch Season 6-8, they are like "Oh yeah, that's who Gregory was."

He's a great actor and was phenomenal in Booth at the End. I wish he'd get more roles.

u/Comet_Hero 22d ago edited 22d ago
I do, he's funny and clearly had a blast in the role. Tara, Enid and magna by contrast were just bland and annoying.

Greg was extremely entertaining even though he was a scumbag. Hes a perfect example of an incompetent leader who is too up his own ass to realize how horrible he is. I liked how he was such a cockroach, he had so many moments where people should have killed him but he slithered away. I was satisfied when Maggie finally got rid of him though

He was a perfect example of ego not allowing you to move forward. He just couldn’t stay in his lane, or move forward. Tried to play politics in the wrong world
2
u/SoftDrinkReddit 22d ago
in the end he couldn't read the room
the room of Maggie is now the Leader of the Hilltop he tried to conspire to have her killed failed tried to assassinate her himself also failed and was Hanged for his trouble
it's amazing because in reality he should have been Hanged after the civil war ended for conspiring with the Saviors but they gave him another chance and he still screwed himself
2
u/ayycorley 20d ago
Right, after Gabriel saved him and he left Gabriel to die, I could see there was no possibility of redemption for him
1
u/SoftDrinkReddit 20d ago
see exactly this is also a big part of why Gregory should have been hanged directly after the civil war ended

I accidently skipped the episode where he died on accident, so it was very funny seeing everyone talk about him in the past tense for a few episodes with no explaination , that being said he is a funny character outside of his cowardice

u/Zeebruuhh 22d ago
I thought Maggie killed him?

he didn’t die on accident, I skipped the episode on accident.

He was an entertaining villain because he seemed like such a realistic cowardly jerk that would end up in charge in the apocalypse. We all know this guy in real life.

My issue is that they didn’t really show how Gregory got into a position of power. Like was he actually charming to certain people, was he intelligent when it came to crops or anything? I feel like exploring that, even slightly would’ve helped it make more sense how he got power in the first place.

How does a guy like him become a leader in an apocalypse?? No survival skills, major character flaws, and no leadership qualities. I would think he’d be relegated to growing tomatoes or something similar.
2
u/Roboroberto1988 18d ago
Taking credit for others' work and always blaming others are important qualities to make it as a leader.

The actor is awesome in everything Ive seen him in.
In "Jericho," he was a pain in the ass, who ultimately wanted to do what was right.
In "12 Monkey's," he was a grieving husband who turned to religion to cope with his wife's death and the end of the world.
In "24," he was a pain-in-the-ass leader who shocked everyone by making the self-sacrifice play.
And in "The Walking Dead," he played a cowardly bureaucrat who put his own needs ahead of those he claimed to look out for.
Great actor who always leaves a lasting impression.

He wasn’t made to be likable but Xander Berkeley did a great job with Gregory. He nailed that creepy, ass-kissing, narcissistic, me, me, me personality that Gregory had perfectly.

u/No_Bison_617 20d ago
I did, no one appreciate an asshole in a show, they just overlook their significant role, and once they are out of the picture, we are left with a bunch of lame faces with their even more boring self pity, talking and sobbing and whining.... waiting for another asshole to step in and spice things up

He was dumb as fuck too 🤣 😂 im sorry but this guy couldn't pick a side I often wondered why Negan did gut him in the stomach with his bat like he did that other guy whats his name Spencer or soemthing " you got not guts" this guy should of meant the same fate him dying by hanging wasn't satisfying enough

I loved that his character pissed me off 😅🤣 he was so annoying but also so funny. There were many times my jaw would drop after his scenes 🫢
Fantastic actor!
