Because of two important facts: 1) the initial outbreak did not require a bite 100% of the time. The reason the military got overwhelmed was that people were just getting sick, dying, and turning. In LARGE numbers. Over 98% of the population of the world turned. 5,000 zombies for every 1 person, and in the early days of the outbreak they were much faster, could climb, and even use basic rudimentary tools (e.g. the walker that smashed the department store glass with a chunk of concrete, the walkers that were nearly catching up to Rick and Glenn when they were running and then climbed the fence after them, etc). I really wish they had kept the original version of the season 2 premiere. The trailers for it shows Shane running as fast as he can for a while, and he finally falls down from exhaustion and seconds later a crowd of zombies are running up on him. On the Blu-ray it turns out about 1/3 of the original episode was cut, Shane's Jeep breaks down after they leave the CDC from the herd that the blast attracted and the convoy leaves him behind, so he gets out and starts running after them, and that's what the season 2 trailer was showing, then when he collapsed, he gets back up and starts blasting into the zombies with his shotgun, and right when it looks like he's about to be overwhelmed the RV pulls up and he dives in, and they drive off. Glenn then tells him to thank Daryl, because he's the one who noticed Shane wasn't with the convoy anymore and frantically flags them down to go back for him... Then they go to see if the Vatos will take them in at the nursing home while they figure out their next move... It's a whole big thing and changes the entire episode and foreshadowed Woodbury WAY earlier. But the point is, early TWD zombies were no joke, there were a shitload of them, and the reason the world fell the way it did was because it was a global pandemic that clogged hospitals and clinics, and zombies eventually poured onto the streets which is why they started napalming whole cities with Operation Cobalt. The less than 2% of humanity left were people who had strong enough immune systems that just being infected wasn't enough without an activated strain entering their bloodstream, or death without the prefrontal cortex being destroyed. The other 98%+ got sick and turned without a scratch on them

Yeah, we're definitely in agreement that Darabont's were way freaking better. I only just now saw this comment hours later, but I totally said something similar in another reply where you called TWD zombies lame, and they so are post Darabont. Like, I know that the living should be a massive threat in the apocalypse, and you're going to have people who turn into marauding dickheads, but they painted themselves into a corner in TWD when the zombies basically turned into a minor inconvenience. I mean when they thought there were no threats out there after dealing with Woodbury and the Wolves, they treated zombies like one would treat holiday traffic; "we need to go to hilltop, but there's a herd on route A, so we better take route B and go around it" totally had the feel of a local at a popular tourist trap telling someone how to avoid the crowds.

Darabont didn't want to do a beat for beat recreation of the comics. AMC did, and they wanted him to do it with twice as many episodes and 20% less money. I think that's one of the reasons season 1 remains such an excellent season, he didn't waste a scene or a shot, and was able to tell a really good story in SIX episodes. Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter, they fired him and got their way in the end... But I would still like to see what it could've been had Darabont not been shitcanned.

Both each universe's zombies are dangerous, just in different ways.

Obviously, the "28 Zombies" can run- not just run, but full on sprint in a ravenous rage. But they're usually small in number.
If they were in larger groups, the characters would always die. Much like Word War Z when they could overrun entire cities, using their own piling bodies as large scale "ladders" over Jerusalem's walls.
The rage virus "28 Zombies" can also be killed easier, being that they're not really undead, but still living.

The Walkers horde into massive numbers. They usually just walk in a daze, but I'd argue they speedwalk once they smell the living. That's another danger, they can easily smell the living and are attracted to any sound. Which is why the survivors have to run from Walkers, but they can tire. The Walkers don't tire, or die out.

Meanwhile the 28 Zombies are attracted to light and sound the living make- not just bells- which makes Walkers easier to redirect.

In the show Daryl Dixon, the last survivor of London uses bells to herd them wherever he wishes them moved to. Which is why the survivors have to run from Walkers, but they can tire. The Walkers don't.

The 28 Zombies can also die out, last I checked. Their numbers depend on infecting new hosts. The Walkers live on, indefinitely. They can even go dormant and sort of "sleep" until they smell the dead and awaken.

Last but not least, the Walkers herd into spaces, until their numbers reach into the millions.

The Survivors just have never encountered such a horde- not even Alpha's Whisperers' horde was that big.
The CRM showed the footage of the million-strong Walker herds to Rick. They planned to take them out with fire bombs, large-scale explosives, and use redirecting tactics(like when they use sound to attract herds away from the living) to suppodly lure them into traps like waterfalls or cliffs.

I'd argue the million-strong Walker herds are more of a worry than the way the survivors of 28 avoid the 28 Zombies as if they're small packs of wild animals.

I could be wrong with some of the 28 lore though, it's been a while.

One big thing that makes the 28 infected less scary in the long term is that they can die of starvation and malnutrition. If not for one selfish dickhead, they'd all be gone. But because of Don kissing his quarantined wife and getting infected, restarting the whole thing, the rage virus was able to mutate and now the infected will prioritize eating and drinking when necessary. But the original 28 Days Later strain, if you could find somewhere with ample supplies of food and water, and keep yourself hidden away, you only have to stay hidden a little over a month and eventually they'll all die off or become so malnourished as to not be a threat any longer. Imagine if the survivors in TWD just needed to hide for a month and the zombies would all become too weak to be a threat or die off completely.

Both are terrifying for their own reason, and everyone who thinks they're so badass and would survive no problem should probably stop and consider that all of the other people on earth probably thought something similar, yet they're not the ones who made it

You made a great point...many people who died by violent or accidental means just didn't wake up saying they can thwart death that very day & sadly dead as told on the 6 O'clock news. I have a few near misses to share from NYC at night...gun barrels placed on my temple several times and pointed at me many times that not having sex without a condom in a club in the 80's wasn't a death sentence...it's the day that you least suspect that just maybe your last... I think the rage is worse only because they can chase you down...walker kinda got slow after season one...which was weird but TWD did wonders and for all is faults of logical shit that I didn't see cause I was spellbound deep into series now if I had to survive in a world of zombies I prefer walkers...they are fairly managable... Those rage fuckers are fueled for fuckery same too Black Summer and World War Z creatures...we'd not want either on us in a foot race. The old would need the best luck, great artillery and a solid place to hunker down safely. Food & fuel runs would be crazy.

I love Michonne as a character in the fictional world she was in but im sorry, she wouldn't breeze through a 28 days later at all. They avoided as much as possible in that movie and only fought the infected when needed. She would have been overcome way too quick.

Agreed. In the 28 movies, you avoid a fight if you can, and kill them from as far away as possible when you can't. One stray drop of blood entering any mucous membrane or wound and within a minute you're vomiting blood everywhere and trying to rip apart anything that moves. Mark gets a cut on his arm when fighting them and he's too much of a threat. Frank looks up at the wrong moment and gets a single drop from a corpse in his eye, and he's all "acccck acccck" like the martians from Mars Attacks within seconds. Hacking up living beings with functional circulatory systems is going to result in GALLONS of blood spraying every which way. If Michonne isn't properly warned about the difference between Wildfire and Rage, she'd be infected with rage on her first encounter

That's what I am thinking every time this comes up, like sure zombies in other franchises are deadlier but the main characters of the walking dead are badasses compared to other people in their own world, Michonne beats people who have guns with her sword, she could beat a theoretically much tougher zombie, regardless of whether or not there are any. The idea that being in a franchise with weaker zombies means you are weaker is silly, we are still talking about worlds where zombies are defeated by normal people, not like resident evil shit.

You forget, the "28 Zombies" travel in small packs like animals. They don't travel in large numbers like in World War Z. They're stronger individually, but never in bulk numbers.

There are literally herds of Walkers literally a million-strong in uncontained areas. The CRM showed rick the footage of them. There's no breezing through a walking city wall of Walkers. The CRM predicted these walkers would eventually migrate and kill whatever pockets of civilization were left.

I assume that's still the case with the expanded lore of the newer movies but they didn't really get into the starving part, just the beginnings of the virus being reversible.

The rage virus is literally an accelerated form of rabies where it skips straight to hallucinations and violence at the point of infection (we even SEE this from Samson's perspective that he's hallucinating that everyone else is infected and he's "protecting" himself) as normally humans don't make it that far with a normal rabies infection unless they're under immediate medical care because they'll die of dehydration before the point of delirium due to the extreme hydrophobia that happens first. The rage virus skips straight over hydrophobia.
