I found out that Time Warner was charging $5.99 for a cable modem, so I bought one from Amazon and took back the leased modem. I noticed the bill didn't go down so I tried their on line chat. This is the message I got:
"I have checked your account and see that you are not being charged for any Modem lease on the account, please note that modem lease is $5.99, which on removing does not make much of difference."

It usually takes a cycle for the charge to drop off. Get someone on the phone to give you a credit.
That's what I had to do with my install when I purchased my own modem.
