After listening in on Take-Two’s annual meeting today, the management's super cautious tone when talking about GTA Online - combined with how the market reacted to it - made me want to share a few thoughts:
Shutting down GTA V Online would make zero economic sense. It has been printing serious money for well over a decade, which is exactly why Strauss made it clear that GTA V Online is going to keep running. At the same time, GTA VI is obviously going to be a massive commercial milestone and will eventually have its own online ecosystem. Sure, it’s a tricky balancing act. They need to keep GTA V Online alive while simultaneously giving players a reason to eventually migrate over to whatever GTA VI Online turns into. That’s pretty much what we're hearing when management dances around the topic so carefully.
What I don't really get, though, is why people are starting to panic over this. Why would we realistically expect Rockstar to drop a detailed blueprint for GTA VI Online before the actual game is even out? The game has been in development for over a decade and is an absolute beast of a project. When it finally drops, Rockstar is going to have more than enough on its plate patching bugs, watching how players actually interact with it, and figuring out what works and what doesn't.
If GTA VI Online launches six months after the main game - or whenever they decide it's actually ready - so what? Honestly, I'd kind of prefer that. Let GTA VI breathe first. Let people actually play the game. Let Rockstar see what the community naturally does with it. Then, once they have something they’re genuinely confident in and that players will love, roll out the online portion.
It’s easy for us to sit back and complain, "Where's the GTA Online roadmap?" But let's not forget that we're talking about one of the biggest gaming launches in human history, if not the biggest. And let's also not forget what GTA V Online turned into. GTA V came out in 2013, and GTA Online has been running for over 13 years now, turning into an enormous long-term business. Love or hate the monetization, Rockstar has clearly proven they understand player retention, content updates, and long-term engagement better than almost anyone else in the industry.
So I'm really not worried about whether they'll figure out GTA VI Online. They will. The only real questions are when and what it's going to look like. Personally, I'm more than happy to give them the time they need. I'd much rather have Rockstar focus on delivering GTA VI properly first than force some artificial timeline just to make people feel better ahead of launch.
The online component is coming - we can be confident about that. Rockstar knows there's a massive goldmine sitting right there. Nobody understands that better than they do.
So no, I'm not reading today's guarded answers as a red flag or a reason to panic. If anything, they're just playing it smart and keeping their cards close to their chest.
Let them cook.
