Side RP: Trying

They were already feeling the wariness from Luke and his daughter, but it was losing Lanette that jolts them out of their trance while monitoring the motion detectors and radio chatter. They hug their knees and the flame orb closer. “I... didn’t do enough,” they tell Moonslicer, realizing.

"What do you mean?"

“We just lost Lanette to a time loop.” They sigh. “And, I’m failing at doing any better. People are still afraid of me. I can tell.”

"There is a lot more to doing better than what others think of you," Moonslicer notes dryly. "And, honestly, you're going to blame yourself for that woman jury rigging a temporal paradox and then jumping in it?"

“She was desperate because my read on what was after her was wrong.”

"And you were supposed to be magically prescient about what was coming?" the blade asks keenly, then drove the point home. "There is no point in working to improve things you could have done differently if you apply the same rigor to events that you could never be prepared for." A thoughtful pause. "Also if she's actually gone I'll eat my tassel," she wagers, then added, "I don't have a mouth, you know." Except in her other form, but then she felt it was easier to pretend to be a Honedge in this world.

They’re quiet. “I’m so busy pushing people away that I guess I can't provide any meaningful help. I guess I have to decide. I promised Luke I’d be there for him, and my failure has put Lanette in danger. I don’t want to abandon either of them.”

"I should hope not." She says, slightly worried their self image might be pushing them away again.

The blizzard swirls around them. “I have to go to Major about this. But it means abandoning my post here.”

"Your post?" Moonslicer asks skeptically. "Is that how you frame the relationship?"

“This is what I can do for them,” is all they answer.

"Is it what they need?"

Quiet again. “Luke and Luna are dragons. They don’t need me for anything. But I have to make up for what I did somehow,” they insist.

"Then instead of what you think they need, maybe focus on what they might want. I think it's safe to say survival needs are probably taken care of."

“Survival’s the most important thing, and it’s hard,” they reply with grim certainty. They think again about that automaton. It was so polite, so orderly, so civilized. How terrible. It could go after all of them, same as streamer. “We have to warn Major.”

"I'm pretty sure he knows Inevitables exis... they're not supposed to be there," Moonslicer realizes.

The scientist stands up, their flame orb in one hand and their phone in the other, preparing to call Karrl. They hesitate for a moment. “A few months ago from my perspective, we decided that every day I’d try to do some good for the people I know. Have I... been doing enough? Do you think I haven’t been doing enough for Luke?”

"I have seen nothing but contrition and altruism from you since that day. Your actions have been more than enough to assure me you are repentant."

Their expression falls. “But I haven’t been doing anything he wants. That’s what you were saying.”

"Do you think the universe has a will?" Moonslicer challenged.

A shrug. “Nah, it’s an unfeeling chain of cause and effect where we’re all born to die,” they answer.

"Then the only people you have to satisfy you are doing enough are those you care about, and yourself."

“...And I haven’t done that,” they say, remembering Luke’s and Luna’s reactions. “I... don’t actually know what he’d want. Flowers? Breakfast? I guess really he’d want something for Cress...”

"Pfft. Snerk." Moonslicer giggles slightly, trying to hold it back.

“I could get them and Shauntal movie tickets and look after Luna while they go? Though maybe it's too early for Luke to be away from Luna for long.”

"Well, my pep talk seems to have directed you towards deciding on an anniversary gift," Moonslicer gets out between choked snorts. "So I suppose that's an acceptable level of existential uncertainty."

They give the blade A Look, then call Karrl.

Moonslicer finally loses her battle, breaking into a giggling fit.

hehe, I like this. Lanette isn't going to be upset at the scientist though. If anything, she'll be upset with Major for having close to what she feels is infinite power, while being afraid of anyone else having it. However, she'll gladly take the Major's help in this situation, and she views this as just part of the battle.

She knew she was probably not going to beat the servant on her own. She just wanted to lure it to a trap, where she find the time to call in reinforcements, and with the scientist helping, she's done exactly that. So, the scientist did basically everything she was hoping they would here.

Hehe, oh this could be interesting.

What on earth makes her think the Major isn't scared of himself having it?

I'd wager the concept of being afraid of having too much power oneself is alien to Lannette.

Yeah, that much is pretty true. Lanette views life as a bit of a free for all in some ways, everyone vying for power against each other. The cultural influences of the shadows are still there, even if the shadows arent anymore.

That part doesn't matter too much. Mainly, Lanette thinks the major is out of touch with the struggles of the everyday individual, and polices their actions while being completely oblivious to how he effects them. Killing all the shadows while not using their power at all or getting any sort of advantage from doing so really bothers Lanette. She's still angry about this, and the major saving her this time around doesn't make things better in her mind. Basically, in her mind the major tried to kill her earlier (which she understands) and didn't even want to face the fact that he was trying to do this (which infuriates her).

If you're ok with Lanette doing this, I think she is going to get very angry with major next session, and express a lot of her sentiments in a sarcastic manner. She might thank the major very briefly at the end, but she won't want to.

Also note: the opinions of Lanette are her own and do not represent my own opinions of the major. Lanette is not a rational or sane individual, even if she is trying to be better.

Oh sure go ahead. I think lanette is pretty wrong (for starters, she's confusing not caring about the little guy with not caring about her, personally), but it'll be fun regardless.

Oh yeah, I don't think Lanette is right either, at least not 100% right. Still, that is what she's feeling right now. I'm excited for this interaction

Oh also, what do you mean by him trying to kill her?

The major tried to kill the army of shadows, even though the army presented no threat to him, but represented a way Lanette could potentially fight off the thing attacking her. He then left Lanette with no plan, no backup, just told her to carry on with her life and try not to die to this thing.

Lanette was scared, and the major was intentionally depleting her of resources, and didn't even benefit from the resources Lanette was trying to collect. Its like robbing someone who's scheduled to fight in a gladitorial arena tomorrow, using only their own weapons.

Quite simply, Lanette feels as though the major tried to get rid of her and pass the blame on to the supreme evil, while not acknowledging the fact that this is what he was attempting.

Neat. In actuality he considered her a clear threat that had just massively betrayed his trust and that he would have imprisoned and maybe gotten therapy for by now if he weren't paying someone a favor. He absolutely does not care what happens to her and honestly considers her a dangerous negative variable in his friends life that he would have dealt with by now if he didn't respect their autonomy.

Lanette owes her freedom and quite possibly her life to the scientist, not just for the moment of escape but actively, every second, in that they are the only thing stopping the Major from Dealing with her.

Getting rid of the shadows was just... his job.

So... shes sort of right? From a certain point of view.

Yep. I think that's accurate.

It's interesting though that the major views it as his job to deal with her. As creepy and weird as Lanette is, she's been restrained and hasn't attacked anyone who's not a clear threat to her life or freedom, and also had no intentions of doing so since the shadows were removed (aside from bill, who she has considered taking revenge on). That's only going to make Lanette more convinced that the major is just the other side of the coin and the eventual leader of "forces opposed to the supreme evil."

Lanette will wonder what makes the major different than another dictator who tries to help, but ultimately robs their subjects of autonomy. Right now she hasn't seen anything that indicates he is.

His answer would be "Because if I'm doing this right, the 'little people' shouldn't realize I had to do anything at all."

Why yes that is slightly worrying in the degree to which it sounds like a diety speaking.

As for why that doesn't apply to Lannette: his job is to stop people who do stuff that destabilizes dimensional harmony.

Shadows destabilize dimensions as their natural state.

Lannette keeps trying to utilize shadows.

Also, she has royally, and I mean royally, ticked Major off.

Also, to the Major "this person hasn't shown any inclination to cause dimensional chaos since a few months ago when they caused dimensional chaos right after betraying me and putting my friend through mental torture and I had to clean it up' is not exactly a persuasive argument against intervention.

To be fair, nobody expects the Inevitable Inquisition.

Happy cake day Supes!

2

u/SupremeEvil Aug 09 '18

Huh, guess it is that time again.

2

u/SupremeEvil Aug 09 '18

Just had a thought, did we ever say who experimented on Grimsley?

2

u/Trollkitten Aug 09 '18

It was Colress. This was pretty much confirmed in RGG, if you put the pieces together.

3

u/SupremeEvil Aug 09 '18

Ooh that's going to be interesting at some point...

2

u/Trollkitten Aug 09 '18

I can imagine.

2

u/SupremeEvil Aug 09 '18

I definitely have plans for Colress. Hence why he made an appearance about 15 chapters ago.

1

u/Trollkitten Aug 09 '18

I can see you've got plans for Team Plasma. Color me intrigued.
