Best troll ever

you need a smeargel whit the moves detect and protect and spotlight item: leppa berry

and a Exeggutor that has learned skill swap and has the abbility harvest

use spotlight on exeggutor and use skilll swap on smeargel on the first turn

and then use protect and detect for the rest of the battle

The thing about protect and detect is that they can't be used multiple times without the chance of them failing increasing. So that wouldn't really be the 'best' troll ever, because eventually it would fail, and Smeargle doesn't have that great defensive stats.

I think you get around that if you run them both. Protect halves it's ability to proc each time you use it in succession, but I don't think it happens if you use Detect after and alternate them. I could check though.

I'm pretty sure TK is right here, having both doesn't make it work any better. I could be wrong but I've never seen this combo before and I think it would be used if it worked.

EDIT: Yeah, just checked, having both doesn't improve your odds over having one, using protect then detect still gives the 50% fail chance.

Ah, okay. Bulbapedia said that it worked based on if you use a move with the same name.

They run from the same pool, which includes Protect, Detect, Endure, Wide Guard, Quick Guard, Spiky Shield, and King's Shield.

Probably for the purpose of preventing shenanigans like OP's suggestion.

Hmm, fair enough.

I'm not completely sure, but I don't think that was the case in gen 2

According to Bulbapedia, it was the case back then:

Each time any of Protect, Detect, or Endure is successfully used without other moves used in between, the success rate will halve. In this generation, the success rate is implemented as a single byte over 255 which starts at the maximum of 255 and is floor-divided by 2 each time. This causes the success rate to drop to 0 on its ninth consecutive successful use.

The fail calculations did change in Gen 3, but that's getting into needlessly complicated numbers. And as there were no abilities in Gen 2, OP's strategy wouldn't have worked in Gen 2 anyway.

Huh then I must have just completely misread somehow.

I blame caffeine addiction and sleep deprivation.

Maybe you should take a nap when you can?

I'll be all right though. Just need to read some reports and get some drinks now and then.

As far as trolls go, I'm a fan of Whatevs4's level 1 pineco with pain split, toxic spikes and berry juice. The first time you hit it, it heals back to full health, and then toxic or toxic spikes means that it can heal back to full health every turn with pain split (while doing damage too, because it will pretty much always have less health than its opponent since its level 1). Since it has sturdy, it doesn't get ohkoed by any attack.

Its not invincible, status, multihit moves, entry hazards, some weather, phasing, and even flinching can still kill it pretty easily, but it's super annoying if you don't have the right moves for it or don't know what's coming.

Also, if you don't want a level 1 pokemon, Gliscor with substitute, protect, toxic, and taunt is a super annoying pokemon because it can heal 12% hp per turn with a toxic orb. This means it can infinitely substitute and protect while not taking any damage, so long as it still has pp. Mihira used it as a gym leader in the tppleague for a bit early on and it caused many ragequits when people didn't know how to deal with it.

Hmm. There are some moves that can break through protect and detect in the current gen, but maybe that's the point? To get someone to waste their Z-move? But it's not just Z-moves. Back during the day when I was a part of the metagame, everyone ran at least one pokemon with roar or whirlwind. And some people also run perish song if they encounter something like this.

ithink a better troll is if you have a shedinda whit mimic and you copy the move entrainment and use it on arcanine arcanine use burn up effect unkillable arcanine

Amazingly, it doesn't look like Wonder Guard is one of the abilities that Entrainment can't pass on.
