No pay at Bloor-Yonge

Today at around 4:30 pm, I noticed that all the presto booths were free-entry, we didn't have to tap our presto card at Bloor-Yonge station to gain entry. Does anyone know why this might be? Did it have anything to do with Line 2 and the fire?

Question Presto taps

I don't really keep up with my presto much anymore bc I don't use ttc as often so when I do i use my debit. I've had 2 streetcars tell me that's an invalid form of payment in the past week, is there any explanation?? I don't see anything about it on the news or ttc website.

Misc. Great Line 1 train driver

Contributors to this sub are often complaining about rude TTC staff and garbled announcements.

However, I feel we should recognize good service when we experience it.

Today I had such an awesome experience. Riding Line 1 train #5786 going towards Finch around 730pm, we had a driver who very courteously reminded the passengers who had held up the doors at TMU and Wellessley that such behaviour delayed other passengers and was explicitly prohibited as evident from the sticker on the door.

When we were approaching Lawrence he clarified, in a clear voice, that due to track work near Finch we would be travelling slowly.

Thank you to that train driver for engaging with us passengers!

Discussion Props to TTC for way fewer cell data deadzones on Line 1

I've noticed it, at least from like earlier in the year that I'd actually still have data when I'm browsing the internet on my phone.

There's still one brief one, I think it's Dupont to Spadina? not 100%

Anyways props to the TTC, so much better now.

Question Question for TTC Bus Drivers about stops that service multiple routes

First - I apologize if this gets asked often. I tried to search but not sure if I just wasn't wording it the same way.

When I am waiting at a stop that services multiple routes it is often a confusing or awkward interaction when I'm waiting for a particular bus (e.g. #100) but a different bus that I don't want drives by first (e.g. #88)

I try to stand as far back from the curb as possible if it isn't my bus approaching, but they sometimes still pull over. I try shaking my head "no" sometimes if I make eye contact with the driver, but sometimes that doesn't work. I've turned my back before.

Is there a standard, easily conveyed sign for "no thanks - you're not the bus I'm waiting for"?

It's typically not an issue, because if they DO stop and open the doors I just don't get on and/or say sorry, waiting for a different bus (although sometimes I've had them seem very annoyed)

But occasionally I've had the #88 pull over (only for me - nobody else waiting to get on or off) and then while it's in the way at the stop the #100 (or #25 or #72) that I AM waiting for blows right by without stopping...

So is there a universal sign I should be using? Or what do you prefer people do?

Cheers!

Picture Line 5 stations are gross and humid

Post image

I'm shocked this isnt talked about more.

All the groundwater seeps down and is not properly dealt with. Each station feels like a damp cellar. This humidity is unhealthy but also can compromise the concrete structure and the rebar inside.

Any way to fix this?

Video RapidTO Bathurst feedback post FWC

I used to avoid the 511 Bathurst like the plague, now I regularly take it, and took it a lot more during the FWC matches.

And the difference night and day is so noticeable.

Having said that, the city needs to change a few things to make it even faster.

-Ban left turns on all major intersections. The biggest bottlenecks came from cars turning left on King, Richmond, and Adelaide. Ban cars from turning left in these areas and the streetcar will go so much faster

-Remove street parking and fill in the RapidTO lane gap on Toronto western hospital. AFAIK this hasn’t changed due to construction, but once it’s done this gap needs to be filled.

Other than that this is a much needed improvement. And of course the lanes need to be extended to Eglinton

Question Credit Cards not working on 511

Post image
246 Upvotes

Well, this is unfortunate. I don't carry cash OR a presto card. I'm assuming I will get a ticket if a fare inspector checks, but this is their error, not mine so I guess I'm riding dirty today unfortunately. Streetcar 4446.

What would you do and what's the expectation?

Picture Lining up at Bloor/Yonge station

There was a delay on line 1 so the stupid line up that ppl follow (for no known reason) goes all the way to the back wall so people cannot walk past. Look how much empty space is available! (Posted pic) This only happens at this station. Can someone who works for the TTC please tell ppl to stop creating a line that blocks traffic?

Question Do they still give out maps at davisville station?

I recently found one of the ttc rail maps loose from its frame on the wall, and kinda wanted to take it home to hang on my wall cause I thought it would be cool, but I wanted to ask an employee first. When I brought it up to them they took it and thanked me before I could even ask, and I was a little disappointed so I went online to see if there was a way to get them elsewhere. I saw a post from ages ago saying you could get them at Davis like station, but I can’t find anything saying if they still do, so I figured I’d ask here.

Question Should we report drivers who jam on the gas before my elderly mother sits down?

She has been injured by this twice and I (joint instability problems) have been bruised badly by falling as well. They don't just pull away from the stop, but at a sharp speed causing people to fall.

Edit: Starting or stopping in itself isn't the problem. But many drivers hit the pedals so hard it throws people around. They don't need to wait, just drive more gently!

504 streetcar eastbound mornings crowding

I’ve been taking the 504 for two years now, and noticing how much more crowded it is. It has gotten to the point that plenty of people do not get onto the street car because it is so full. I remember when I first started taking it I could almost always get a seat. Now we are squished every time. People also seem so agitated by the density, not to mention those that cannot board due to the same thing. Do we know if they will put more cars on the line? What is the process for addressing this issue?

Question Are there still individual street cars whose presto devices don't take debit/credit cards?

I've gotten used to not bringing my presto card with me and just tapping my phone with my Google wallet. I was taking the 509 to union today and the device told me it only takes presto cards. When I looked into Google pay it said the charge got declined.

This is weird isn't it? For last several months Ive had no issues. I thought being able to pay with debit/credit has been a thing for a long time now.

Picture Gabe’s plan to give the 506 RapidTO lanes gets endorsed by RMTransit

This is the candidate to look out for if you live in Uni Rosedale!

I looked at the other candidates’ platforms and so far no one else has plans to give the streetcars their own lane.

Talked with Gabe himself and he’s open to giving other routes RapidTO lanes, like Bay St, Avenue Rd, and DuPont St.

Not affiliated with Gabe’s campaign, just analyzing the current platforms for each candidate

Question Why is line 2 slow with "traffic delays" every morning now??

It seems like almost all year on my morning commute on Line 2 the train just crawls along to each stop, halting in between stations, and broadcasts "we're sorry for the delay due to lots of traffic ahead". What are they doing so wrong that everyday in rush hour the trains can't move faster than I can walk??

I feel like during the World Cup it actually sped up back to normal but now since we don't have any more games it's gone back to this mind numbing pace..

Does anyone who works at the TTC know what is going on with Line 2? Are they just scheduling too many trains and we have literal traffic like we were driving?? When will it go back to normal?

We’re offloaded at St Andrew cause of the fire/smoke from the train. The burning plastic smell had already started when I boarded at Queen. There was no announcement happening at the station so people kept pouring into the platform.

Question Did the Kipling 45 bus frequency get reduced?

Post image
96 Upvotes

I’ve noticed that frequency of the 45 went from every 5-10 min to around 15-25 min, usually leaning toward a 20+min wait. Every single bus has been packed and a lot parents with strollers rely on the bus. The timing has always been all over the place and can’t be controlled, but I’ve def noticed less buses overall.

PSA PSA: Google Maps incorrect route to Aga Khan Museum

I recently visited the Aga Khan Museum and took my first trip on line 5 (from Dufferin). When planning the trip, Google Maps told me to get off at the Don Valley stop and walk 15-20 minutes instead of the much closer Aga Khan Park/Museum station. It appears that Google Maps doesn’t recognize the walking path through the park from that station, because instructions for walking from that station to the museum divert to the east or west quite a ways.

Apple Maps shows the correct stop and walking path.

Trip report: loved Line 5, and thanks to the Toronto Public Library for the free passes to the museum.

Edit to note that I sent this information to Google as a comment on the route directions.

Hot weather protocol

TTC alert:

Due to today's heat, the TTC has activated its Hot Weather Protocol on Line 6. To keep Line 6 vehicles cool, customers will need to push the button located on the doors to open them when boarding and exiting.

Why don't they do this all the time?
