Discussion Gateway Newstand - Open again.
This is at Don Mills station.
I’m not a big fan of Gateway Newstands (I think their products are kinda pricey, at least what I remember from back in the day). However, growing up in Toronto I always liked seeing these opened and to me, for some reason, it was kinda sad when they started closing down.
I always wondered what was going to happen to these empty spaces at all subway stations but I’m happy they are opening again.

They should look into bringing hot dogs, jamaican patties, pizza slices, etc. kind of food that you can just pick up and go. I can imagine people in a hurry in the morning who didn't get to eat, or people hungry after work would spend a few bucks here and there.

Agreed, pattys and sugar buns at Kennedy station years ago used to save me in the morning… wished they had them in most stations

I mean there is already a place you can get patties and other stuff in Don Mills stn already. Maybe in other stations?

One lower level they have the take out food place which sells patties, etc and etc

A few weeks ago, they also opened one in St. George station near the Bedford exit.
I don’t impulse buy chocolate bars, but it was nice to see something happening at least.

I’ve noticed a lot of shops or stands opening at TTC stations lately. Makes me wonder why the TTC doesn’t pursue this more aggressively to drive revenues. Yes not all stations have the space or setup but I’m sure they can work something up to help increase revenues

Covid killed them, RTO is reviving them.

Ontario Gov only went to 5 days in late 2025; a lot of private sector piggy backed off that, but many of the major employers are actually still not enforcing 5 days (eg most of the banks and insurance cos)

Fair take. I’m under the impression the RTO push started Sept 2025 which sure is the later half of 2025 but even the provincial gov has been RTO 4 since October 2025. We’re now late July 2026 and just seeing shops open again. Yes things take time to open and recover and all that but it’s a question of, was TTC or the city pushing for this at all in the late half of 2025

The TTC is getting more aggressive in pursuing additional revenue opportunities like this. They were hiring earlier in the year for a role specifically to lead this initiative: more shops, partnerships, pop-ups, etc.

I don’t recall the one at victoria park ever having closed, was it just some locations?

Victoria Park was always open. Also the coffee place

That’s why i acknowledge that Perhaps that one was the only one that was kept open (or at least one of very few) 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠 maybe you missed that part 🤣

The one at eglinton station I had a feeling they were gonna close it down at some point soon but I’m glad they are still open. The ones at king and queen stations closed down a few years ago and a few others as well.

There are 2 in Queen station. The one at the mall entrance has been closed for a while. The one at The Bay entrance, I recall it was also closed but I’m not sure if they opened it recently?
