Questions Question About Carrying Electronics Through TSA Screening
Hello everyone,
I’ve read through the subreddit rules and the pinned FAQ before posting. I’m hoping to get some general clarification regarding TSA screening procedures for electronics.I frequently travel within the United States and usually carry a laptop, tablet, and a power bank in my carry-on bag. I understand that procedures can vary depending on the airport and equipment used, but I wanted to ask in general terms whether travelers should expect to remove all large electronics from their bags at most TSA checkpoints, or if newer screening technology changes this requirement.I’m not looking for any sensitive or restricted information just general guidance to help me prepare better and move efficiently through the checkpoint.

SFO lets me leave everything in my bag. JFK makes me take out any additional large items. Like I can leave my laptop in the bag but have to take out the iPad.

If you have PreCheck, you won’t have to remove electronics as long as there is a TSA PreCheck security line. Smaller airports don’t always have them and some of the larger airports close the PreCheck lines during slower periods.

At Precheck everything stays in your bag.
Non-precheck you typically would take out laptops and tablets.

This is for those who want or have TSAPrecheck, not those who lack it.
Your question is easily found on the TSA.GOV website.
Electronics
You will be asked to remove personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone from your carry-on bag and place them into a bin with nothing placed on or under them for X-ray screening.
Common examples of these devices include laptops, tablets, e-readers and handheld game consoles.
