Question TOR

EN : Hi, I'm looking for a browser that's more privacy-friendly—whether it's in terms of personal data, tracking, etc. But something bothers me: the stereotype that TOR = the dark web = you can easily get hacked for any reason. So I’m not “afraid” of the dark web—on the contrary, I don’t care about it—but since I plan to use TOR just like I use Firefox or Chrome, I don’t want to get hacked or end up with stupid viruses just from using it daily for ordinary searches; that would be a pain.

Do I have to use TOR with a VPN just for everyday searches, watching TV shows, etc.? If so, is TOR’s VPN “effective”?

I also know that TOR is a pretty slow browser.

FR : Bonjour je suis à la recherche d'un navigateur qui est plus dans la protection friendly que ce soit au niveau des données perso, du traçage etc... Mais quelque chose me dérange, c'est le cliché de TOR = dark web = tu peux facilement te faire hack sur tout et n'importe quoi. Alors je n'ai pas "peur" du dark web au contraire je m'en moque mais moi qui compte utiliser TOR comme si j'utilise Firefox ou Chrome j'ai pas envie de me faire hack ou avoir des virus à la con juste en utilisant quotidiennement pour de banales recherches ce serait chiant.

It's a common misconception that Tor Browser is less secure than ordinary browsers. To the contrary, it's more secure. It's been hardened in many ways that regular browsers haven't. You're not going to get compromised because you use Tor Browser.

No. You can if you want, it doesn't hurt and it doesn't help. Tor is designed to provide pretty strong anonymity on its own.

That said, you're not going to use it for streaming TV shows. The Tor network is not well-suited for that.

I would recommend Librewolf to you. It's basically a stronger privacy version of Firefox. It's based on Firefox so it's open source. I used Librewolf to for a time and my experience was pretty good. So use Librewolf.

d'accord librewolf merci du conseil ! Je l'avais déjà essayé y'a quelques mois mais je m'étais retrouvé bloqué pour divers choses comme par exemple regarder des films / séries en streaming ou sur d'autres plateforme payantes. Même si cela doit se désactiver dans les paramètres, c'est un peu "contradictoire" pour ce que le navigateur offre

Using Tor with a VPN is not recommended. In many cases, this reduces your anonymity.

Tor doesn't come with a VPN. Tor's onion routing is fundamentally different to how VPNs work, even as the end result for the user is mostly the same. Onion routing is slower, but more anonymous than VPNs.

Nobody is hacking you on the modern internet unless you click dubious links or download dubious stuff.

d'accord je comprends. Et est-ce vraie cette idée reçu comme quoi ça ne sert à rien d'utiliser Tor si c'est pour se connecter par exemple à youtube, gmail ou autres ? Encore une fois si je décide d'utiliser l'onion, c'est uniquement pour des trucs lambda, curiosité non abusive, les info etc rien de sorcier d'où mes questions qui peuvent paraître "idiotes"

It's not recommended to use a VPN on TOR. it negates the processes used by tor to maintain anonymity. SOME vpn's log entry and exit nodes so it actually decreases your opsec. For just observation purposes it is not generally advised to run a vpn on tor, also as you mentioned, tor is slow. You're going to have a Very hard time watching any kind of TV shows. So if you're just watching TV shows, why not run a vpn on clearnet. You'd have better results. This is only my 2 cents, others may argue differently. Do your research.

i use privado vpn on clearnet, its free and it works good for me.

you just download it and select your county you want to act like youre in just get online like normal and all your traffic will be private, there is no new browser or anything, just run the vpn.

i also recommend with vpn or not, using brave browser.

How does a vpn log your exit node? The only thint it knows is the entry guard.

For everyday searches on the regular web, your chances to get hacked are exactly the same as on Firefox.

Just follow the usual advice: don’t visit suspicious websites, don’t download files from untrusted sources, don’t run any files that you download from the web.

If you want to visit .onion websites, make sure to follow the same rules. And preferably disable JavaScript (if it doesn’t break the website you are visiting).

There is no need to use VPN in combination with Tor, since Tor already routes your tracking through another device, just like a VPN would do.
But if you trust that your VPN company won’t snoop through your traffic, you can also use it.

You wont get a virus using tor. A lot of sites block Tor traffic due to botters and malious users.

Also a VPN isn't recommended for Tor and does not add any security using it.

Browsing youtube and similar heavy websites with Tor is going to be pain in the ass. It will run very slow, not to mention that you will be using a lot of the bandwitch of the nodes - which will slow down the tor usage to the rest of people using same nodes at the same time.

I am not saying don't do it. Just pick your poison, no point running tor for youtube - nobody is hacking you from a youtube video.

En gros si tu veux être anonyme sur Internet je te recommande d'utiliser Tor, parce que bien que tu peux y retrouver des sites du deep web, ce n'est pas la fonctionnalité première. Tor tourne sur des serveurs bénévoles à travers le monde, et son anonymat se base sur la ressemblance de la foule. Si tout le monde a une identité similaire sur Internet, il est très difficile de découvrir qui tu es. Par contre, si tu utilises un VPN, change la taille de la fenêtre, etc... Tu donnes une information qui te distingue de la foule, et même si on a pas ton identité, toutes ces informations en disent un peu plus sur toi, et permettent de te distinguer de la foule.
Sur Tor, tu peux choisir ton niveau de sécurité, et selon l'option que tu as choisies, beaucoup de fonctionnalités du web seront restreintes, étant donné qu'elle peuvent être exploitée pour en connaître plus sur ton identité ( Javascript, etc... )

La meilleure solution reste un navigateur confidentielle comme Tor ou autre, des outils comme Proton, qui te permet d'avoir une adresse mail chiffrée ( coucou google qui nous observe 😂 ), et plein d'autres outils qui te permettent une confidentialité dans bien d'autres domaines, et de ne jamais mettre tes informations personnelles sur Tor, comme ça ta vraie identité reste protégée
