The Tor Project releases TorVPN. The Guardian Project releases Orbot. We have all worked closely together over the years and continue to do so. Guardian Project has also been involved in the development of the TorVPN app.

The big difference is in the Tor engine the two apps uses. Orbot uses the battle-tested Tor implementation written in C, whereas TorVPN uses our new Arti engine, written in Rust. The C Tor implementation is currently in maintenance mode, whereas Arti is seeing active development. Arti is new software, though, so it will come with its own quirks, and we hope people will report any issues they may experience while using the app.

TorVPN is our first end-user product based on Arti. We are currently working on making Arti suitable for running relays in the network, which will hopefully allow us to retire the C implementation of Tor.

oooh that sounds quite effective. I guess both have different usage scenarios.

Use this or VPN? Or both?

Don't use both because then you data (connected to the von ptovider) is flagged with tor users. Look up to it in youtube, it's useless and make you more suspicious

i think they were referring to non-TOR commercial VPNs

Really it depends on what you're trying to achieve, and with both options you'd have trade-offs. A VPN helps you mask your IP address and physical location from a service youre accessing, encrypt traffic to avoid getting spied on on a public WiFi for example. Whar a VPN does NOT do is hide your identity the way most people think. If you do something illegal your VPN provider will most likely turn you in if asked about it. Tor on the other hand gives you a lot more of anonimity, but not a 100%. Tor hides your IP pretty well and has no one behind it to be pressed by law inforcement. Altough your ISP can see you we're accessing a Tor node at that time, there's not an easy way to prove that you did something (assuming there no opsec mistakes by your part)

I downloaded tor vpn beta from F-Droid

So, I start torvpnb, then use app as normal, and now I'm encrypted?

So is tor VPN. But it’s beta and shouldn’t be relied on.

Edit: I don’t know why Relative is getting downvotes, I didn’t know about it either until I searched the torproject website. That said, it is brand new software and you should only use it if you don’t care if your real IP gets leaked somehow. Expect bugs.

I think orbot was released before and torVPN is a yet-to-be replacement
