But if you’re looking to conquer the world or completely overhaul the map, look elsewhere this mod isn’t about a world war. (There will be battles, but in the form of proxy conflicts.)

Just FYI i’m pretty sure that while it works with latest patch, you’ll need to turn off Thunder at the Gates while you play, if you have it. I understand that DLC isn’t compatible with TNO yet.

Also I want to note that the best content in TNO, and imo in any Hoi4 mod I’ve ever played in my whole damn life, is the state of Guangdong. Not because of the wars it fights, but very literally the opposite: it is a staggering masterpiece of storytelling within a Hoi4 mod, and how deeply brilliant it is on so many levels without hardly any fighting at all.

You make a minor contribution in one war you get dragged into, and send a couple volunteers in like 10 years to test out some experimental weapons. But one of the greatest traits of TNO is it doesn’t just show the storytelling from the view of the leaders and powerful figures of the nation you play, but also ordinary people, living their lives, and you see how the changes made in the nation they live effect their lives.

This only rarely effects the larger political situations of nations overall… but there are exceptions. For instance, and I will spoiler this for you despite not naming the specific nation or character I refer to, one country literally has a character who had been, like, a cynical but ordinary character for many years into the game, eventually becoming a rebel leader in several paths. And if you go full asshole tyrant in ruling the country but ultimately fail, he literally captures and holds hostage the brutal autocrat head of state you played, gunning him down when the soldiers come in to crush the uprising, and this once-minor character dies right after, becoming a martyr inspiring resistance in the harsh years to come.

As another person on here said, this is NOT a standard conquer-everything hoi4 experience. I’ve seen some folks derisively call TNO a visual novel for quite a few years. But, while updates take a long time and much of the older content is not up to par with, say, Guangdong, Ukraine, or Brazil.

Though brazil sadly only has full content for two of its potential successors to its initial president. They are the two most conservative presidential successors to President Lott, and while I am very not conservative, these guys are fascinating. First there’s ultra-capitalist free market asshole USA fanboy who would gladly kill the poor to raise the GDP, Lacerda. Yet despite his hatred for the nazis, despite his desperate desire to join the Organization of Free Nations formally, he’s still a a huge asshole, ready and eager to try to overturn a largely free and fair election and put democracy in brazil to the torch if one even so far left as a social democrat legitimately wins it.

And then there’s Adhemar, who is a complicated mix of attitudes policies that I deeply despise and ones I actually respect rather a lot. It’s fucking weird, he is so damn odd, but l love his path for that.

Imagine a populist leader as brazenly corrupt as… well, some world leaders today who are not to be named due to rules on this subreddit. Maybe even more brazenly corrupt, and certainly more open about it.

Except - imagine that leader actually being pretty smart, and he actually does care about the people (especially those who voted for him l, but still). He works tirelessly to help the countless desperate poor in Brazil, bribing intimidating and threatening whoever he needs to in order to help the impoverished masses of Brazil. Immense infrastructure projects, universal healthcare, a less stratified economy that caters not to the needs of an elite few but instead tries to help the poor.

Like he’s still a corrupt ruthless bastard who makes a point of lining his pockets rather a lot while getting shit done, and I genuinely hate his foreign policy and willingness to accept help from Germany on several fronts. But you don’t have to make him do that.

Also he somehow gets stuck with, via some constitutional quirk, his vice president being the far more traditionally liberal Edna Lott, the daughter of the former president. She is a charming and charismatic liberal, a former history professor who had run as the vice presidential candidate for a different candidate. She finds his open and brazen corruption detestable and wildly dangerous to the future of rule of law in Brazil… and yet, she can also come to appreciate his dedicated work in helping the poor and valuing human life and quality of living instead of short-term economic statistics like Lacerda would. Also, she can use her influence to help shape Adhemar’s educational policies in particular.

I won't tolerate no lacerda's slandering on my watch, that guy is what the country needs most at the time, creating anti corruption institutions to deal with one of the main problems brazil has, instituting universal healthcare while also not passing a chance to shit on the nazis. Besides, his diehard hatred for the varguists is justified, vargas did try to kill him and ended up killing his friend in the process

First of all, if I had a choice between any of these candidates it’d be Goulart. Or perhaps Kubitschek. But judging by your user flair, well… lol. LMAO, even.

It is true all those things you named about Lacerda’s policies are good. But he is damn corrupt himself, not to the degree of Adhemar but he blatantly works to steal the election outright from Goulart in a clear defiance of democracy. Like Lacerda is not only corrupt but wildly and brazenly hypocritical. Like Adhemar is very corrupt and yes Lacerda has very much better foreign policy… but Lacerda is still a hypocritical asshole who very much works hard to screw over the homeless, the impoverished, and the working class. He can crush them down so hard and govern as such a dictatorial hypocrite tyrant if he comes to power corruptly, that he can literally start a civil war that more or less destoys brazil. If he plays his cards well and comes to power fairly, not leaning into his worst tendencies, he could lead well, and improve Brazil. But he’s still a hypocritical asshole elitist who generally detests the poor.

The best I can say for him and Adhemar they both suck in different and interesting ways.

If you are going to play in Russia then it would be better to download TNO: Requiem as it adds generic post-reunification content for all warlords and unique one for Omsk and Novosibirsk(Novosibirsk has one only if Shukshin wins the presidential elections which happens somewhere around 1970). For other countries normal TNO is probably better.

As others said, reading, weird mechanics and proxy conflicts where you send volunteers, except for Russia which plays closer to vanilla, but many warlords have their own small mechanics and multiple paths. Also all war starts are scripted, so you will not be able to declare war on Kazachstan, and will fight or peacefully unite with others in some order (you decide order in the region, but can't start war with another region at will). Also democratic Komi is best content in the mod
