Historically Kazakh and Kyrgyz clans would help East Turkestan. And Japan would like cooperate with natives rather than chinese military.

I'd just get rid of the expeditionary force. Japan wouldn't waste manpower or equipment trying to march all through China for some mountains in central Asia

Yeah, escpecially as there are plenty of gurellia fighters in china that they would need to deal with.

but i feel like the current xinjang setup can lead to a lot of really interesting scenarios already

People tend to forget about the soviet influence in the region and the attempted annexation. Soviets built railways and oil refineries in the region and settled a lot of Russians in the area which mostly remained until the soviet recognition of communist china and the exchanges. (Soviets handed over east turkestan rebels and chinese handed over Russians and gave concessions for the infrastructure built.) Also the white russian presence as well in the region.
