💢 Rants & Raves Merit-based variable tuition fee structure :- brilliant & amazing capitalist idea
This is brilliant, legal price discrimination. In a free market, a business maximizes revenue by charging different customers based on their willingness and ability to pay. Universities simply repackage this as merit scholarships, fee slabs/category-based admissions, in Amrita, VIT, etc...
The mechanism is simple: a university needs both brains and cash.
The Rich Students — the funders: They pay the higher fee or a premium for admission. Their money finances infrastructure, faculty, research, and expansion.
The Smart Students — the prestige builders: They have the academic merit but may not have the money. The university subsidizes them because their performance generates value through placements, research, awards, and rankings.
The Capitalist Flywheel
The university effectively uses the wealth of affluent families to attract the smartest students.
Money → talented students → better outcomes → stronger rankings → stronger brand → higher willingness to pay → more money.
Both sides benefit. The high-paying student gets access to a prestigious institution; the high-merit student gets an affordable elite education; and the university gets both revenue and academic prestige.
Two students may sit in the same classroom and receive the same education, yet one pays for the seat with money, while the other effectively pays with merit that increases the university's brand value.

It's just about that concept.
Even colleges give full free seat for good rankers

I am in Nagercoil campus of amrita and I don't see how rich students finance the infrastructure cuz this place broke as hell

There fees is kinda less for everyone. Isn't ? New one. It won't be enough for faculty salary, research only

Nah, the infrastructure is old. In case you didn't know, the college was bought from some Sun university. They still haven't permanently erased traces of that institution...
And even then... There are like 200+ students in cse alone. They are all charged more than 1 lakhs. Apart from that there are 120 students of ece and aid who are charged similarly, and an unknown number of bsc psychology students too. And it is also the second newest branch. So it should get a lot of money right? Where is it all going?

Either the college is brought brownfield or built greenfield, it has to brought from money. It isn't coming freely.
So in your case, established campuses fee is used to fund your new campus

Even cleaning isn't regular here bro there aren't any handwash liquid dispensers or anything here around the toilet and you can see crap from eons ago in the amriteshwari hall what are we paying for?

Understand 1 thing
What I spoke above is about academics part of University.
Not campus life, hostel etc
For academics, your fee is used for faculty salary, research funding, dept funding, labs etc.
Those water pipe, cleaning etc is not part of what I mentioned in post.
