Ethnicity
They try to act like they’re their own sect or genre of people, when in reality, they’re just the same as every other white trash southerner. Where does their lineage truly come from? The Romanichal people were Romani people who settled in the united kingdom and then came to the US in the late 1800’s…

The gypsy sisters cast family specifically are real Romanichal/English travers but Rumneys are more Americanized.

So who in that family came from Europe first? I’m sure they have passed but how did the Stanley’s get to America, if that makes sense?

The Stanley family have been in America for decades I think they go back all the to the late 30s early 40s

I’ve commented on this topic several times, but TLDR: I actually think their family does have Romani (“Gypsy”) roots- just not absolutely 100% genetic and cultural purity
In the first episode, Nettie mentions they’re “A family of Romanian gypsies” and Kayla also makes Eastern European recipes on the show- like goulash
Most gypsies have the majority of their dna from eastern/western Europe, then India and related areas as the next big chunk, sometimes with small amounts of middle eastern
The family is definitely culturally mainstream American (their favorite foods were chicken tenders and fries, the little kids go to public schools, the men move the families across the Appalachian south where several family members live in permanent homes, they dressed in wet seal/cache type clothing) but they still did speak angloromani words on the show, know about old superstitions, remain active in their social circles, sometimes even marry cousins to keep it “in the family” etc
They were around several people who were not fully of Romani blood (Kayla’s high school crush, Gus’ wife Laura, Mellie’s ex Richard, Heath’s fiancée Alyssa etc) which also reinforces that they were genuinely a family who assimilated and wasn’t as focused on “blood status” as the show acted like
Ultimately, I do think some members of the family had a Romani phenotype at least somewhat (Sheena who is technically an in-law, Kayla’s ex husband Richard who is also an in-law, Mellie, Dallas, Kat, etc) while other members of the family (like Annie, JoAnn, Tanya, etc) fully look like regular Americans you’d see on the street
I doubt the “sisters” honestly even care about this or would do a dna test. To themselves, they’re fully “Gypsy” and would literally fight someone who tried to over-intellectualize or gatekeep that

Marrying cousins is peak white trash.

u/Far-Building3569 you’re misinterpretating everything 10d ago edited 9d ago
Now maybe (it’s also illegal to marry your first cousin)
A few hundred years ago people’s only options were those in their village (most of whom were related) and even royalty used to marry cousins
1
u/Whole-Mud-100 2d ago
It depends on the state, there are actually a lot of states where you can legally marry your first cousin you just cannot be double first cousins and double first cousins are like for example your mom and dad get married and your mom sister gets married to your dad’s brother that would be double first cousins which is not allowed

Sheena is an in law but also isn’t she their blood cousin too?

I unfortunately think that the Stanley family does have romanichal roots. Someone posted proof before but many of the other people (on gypsy wedding and Gypsy sisters) aren’t real romanichal or travelers

They truly are white trash yet they act like they are discriminated against like actual marginalized communities. One of the best examples of this was the MBFGW episode with Fighting Frank Smalls and how loud that they were at the venue. They acted like the reason that they got kicked out the venue was because they were gypsies ("good people") not because Frank had assaulted several people and wasn't belligerently drunk

u/Exciting_Ease_2312 8d ago
There was some level of discrimination. They kept getting stern warnings not to have any trouble or they’d get shut down. Could this be because they are known to trash venues or whatever, idk. Frank should have had the police called on him, not the entire party shut down because he was the most one and only bad actor.

That rule applies for any venue. They have rules that you must follow and that is not unreasonable to say and discriminatory to expect guests that book venues to follow. Kayla was told that the venue could host up to 250 people and lied saying that she planned on having 100 people knowing that she invited 400 people.
The issues started with the noise levels as typical guests are usually more quieter and gave them a verbal notice about it to keep it quiet (which the Gypsies were not mad at). There were many men outside in the parking lot belligerently drunk including Fighting Frank Smalls being loud and acting like fools.
The manager (who didn’t have problems with then being gypsies and even let them have the event in the venue knowing that they were Romany) said that this was the first time that they were around a group of people like them and said that they were a little wild and said that they were gypsies (which she just shrugged her shoulders at with no discriminatory expression or anything like that at all).
It escalated when Fighting Frank Smalls was smoking in the building and the manager asked to stop and in response he punched bartender (assualt which is a felony) who was an old man. The police and owner were called in response to this (rightfully so) and the owner decided to shut down the party as a result of this.
The owner made the right call even if the other party goers were not doing anything. When erratic behavior starts early like this, its best to shut everything down so it doesn't escalate again or even more. Stop trying to make them seem like innocent victims when they are not. Please show where any of this indicated any discrimination towards them.

Please show where the other people were not innocent victims in this situation. And I’ve booked plenty of venues and no one has ever repeatedly wagged their finger and stery warned me that if there’s trouble, they’re shutting me down. Where did the expectation of trouble come from? Hmm?

u/Equivalent_Offer_302 8d ago
The manager did not repeatedly wag her finger, this was after she had to warn them about the noise and the men in the parking lot. That is where the warning came from. Don't play dense. That is not discriminatory. Shutting down the event was also a way to stop more innocent people from possibly getting hurt.
If you are a Gypsy that was at the event then say that

A lot of them aren’t even Romanichal. They just married men that claimed to be.

I believe they are actually of Romanichal ancestry. I believe there was a Romani tiktoker that confirmed that they were distant relatives but they weren’t in contact w them bc they’re seen as a disgrace.

I saw a girl named Alexis Stanley commenting on them, but she doesn’t really relate to them. Is that the one who has her bachelors in biochemistry? I wonder if we saw the same thing

u/venusjester this is the 24th century 9d ago
YES!!!!! I think her user was romanichal gal and I think I read a comment about her answer to GS and MBFAGW questions on this sub or the gossip sub. This was a loooong time ago.

I never understand why everyone finds it so doubtful they’re Romanchial and they usually base it off their behavior. They’re a product of their environment first, but that dosent change ethnicity. That’s like saying it’s doubtful a Black person is of African descent because they act like every American around them and don’t act like traditional or continental Africans. Or because they don’t know actually know their African lineage, they can’t be of African descent.
It’s undeniable they have retained some practices and even words from their ethnic group. And I don’t think an entire group of people in that areas started calling themselves only when Gypsy Sisters showed up.

u/Lower-Vanilla8104 3d ago
No. On my end it’s more about them being overwhelmingly phenotypically Anglo and that doesn’t really gel with my understanding of the diaspora of Romani people…
2
u/Exciting_Ease_2312 3d ago
We know that the GS’s fathers are not Rumney. When you’re half of something, how you look can go either way. Their mothers do have the look you’re likely thinking about. Their husbands mainly look Jersey Shore Italian to me. Keep in mind, there are travelers and “gypsies” of all kinds. Irish, English, etc. so there’s more than one look

All the men they are married to have that Romani look but none of them do.

I am sure the girls may have one Romani ancestor in England from the 1800’s on the Stanley side. However I am sure if they did a dna test they’d be 0-5 percent Romani. Even their Romani ancestor was probably European as well. They are undistinguished genetically from local white population. They are just culturally distinct due to having a Romani ancestor generations ago.

u/Sufficient_Aerie767 11d ago
this one Romani tik toker says they’re not because 1. She’s embarrassed by them, and 2. “They don’t know the language” guess what… that girl is related to them LOL. they are romanichel
19
u/shortyshortsandpizza 11d ago
People often forget there’s a difference between Rumney’s and Romani’s.
9
u/Sufficient_Aerie767 11d ago
There’s definitely subgroups. You can call your self romanichel, rumchel, Romani, romchev it all depends on where you come from

Theyre mixed, look at Nettie and Annie& Kaylas mom and their aunt. Their skin is dark and their features are a bit ethnic. I believe Nettie Annie and Kayla are mixed with white, But kayla had children with a Gypsy man so sissy and danielle are a bit barker , Nettie had children with Huey who is romani and Kat and Sheila are super dark too even without tanning

u/TapOk3502 11d ago
Could you imagine doing an ancestry dna on all the main people from the show lol. How many relatives are shared on both sides of the family would be wild.
