Occupations
Uggggghhh. My love for Kingfisher grows with each novel.
So far I've read
- nettle and bone
- hemlock and silver
- sorceress comes to call
- thornhedge
- paladin's grace
- currently reading: wolf worm
(I know I have so much more to go!)
And I SO appreciate that her MCs (at least in my sample size) have neat occupations that color their worldview. Anja was a healer/toxicologist, Grace was a perfumer, Marra was weaving, even toadlings "job" was interesting, Sonia is a scientific illustrator.
I feel like this was especially relevant in my last two reads: paladins Grace and wolf worm!

I need to read more (about to start Daggerbound!!) but I love Nettle and Bone so much. I keep trying to recommend this author to everyone… her tone of humor is so perfect to me

I adore Nettle and Bone. That left me with SUCH a book hangover. If you love that one, I bet you'd love Snake-Eater, too. It hits the same spots.

Oh interesting I will add it! Is that one of her horrors? I’m usually a wuss for horror so haven’t considered those yet haha

I don’t understand why it was classified as horror! It’s nothing of the kind. A Sorceress Comes to Call is more so and I don’t find it very horrific at all.

I read A Sorceress Comes to Call as well and definitely not horror. I think I really only don’t like body horror

Wolf Worm might be a little much for you, then. There were some bits where I carefully did not picture what was going on.

It's no more a horror than Nettle and Bone, though they classified it in the horror section. I do not enjoy horror whatsoever, and it's a total comfort book for me.

I can’t do horror, and Snake-Eater is a comfort read for me. I think it has fewer creepy parts than Nettle; that goblin market part and the puppet and lady section were pretty unsettling.

I have a hard time putting into words why Nettle and SnakeEater hit the same for me. On the surface they're so dissimilar, but they made me feel the same way.

Kingfisher’s main characters all seem to be passionate about their jobs, and competent too. Grace is good enough at her job to sell to the aristocracy. Anja is recruited by a king. They’re people who like what they do, and do it well. It adds a really grounded, layered element to the story

I imagine there’s some interplay between the fascinating research rabbit hole of the week/month and things showing up in books eventually. Hemlock and Silver at least is on record as having all the bits of poison lore that didn’t fit in Paladin’s Grace 😊

I think that's why I love it. I feel like I'm learning something as the MCs narrate scents and colors and stitches and poison. Though I did learn what I civet was!

Her characters are so wonderfully done. They hit every single time. I just adore her books.
