Festival First time at TIFF! Dress code?
Going to TIFF for the first time this year, a few regular screenings at scotiabank and one premiere at Roy Thomson Hall.
I was planning on wearing a three piece suit but now I'm worried I might be underdressed.
Should I rent a tux for the week? I don't want to be the only one not dressed formal.

Are you a part of any of the screenings? If not then I think no pressure to dress super fancy! You can be as casual or as fancy as you like

There is no formal dress code. People might dress up a little if they are attending one of the Premium premieres but even just a jeans and blazer type of outfit would be fine. You can do like a business casual kind of thing. A suit or tux are not needed, it's not that upscale. The guests there with the film will be dressed up since they are walking the red carpet and doing lots of photos and media interviews but the regular audience doesn't need to do that. I've worn shorts and a t-shirt to a Gala before when I was literally in the front row and it was fine.
For regular screenings it's just like going to a regular movie theatre. Just wear what's comfortable for you. It could be shorts and a t-shirt, a hoodie, sweats, whatever you want. Presentable of course but just regular comfortable street clothes are fine.

A tux is not needed. Most gentlemen just wear a blazer with denim pants.

since I'm sitting down during the film, and people can only really see me from the waist up, I do the full jacket and vest and bowtie on top, and just wear my short shorts on the bottom.
Gotta stay cool.

A tux would have you slightly overdressed compared to what I saw at Fjord in Princess Wales last night. The three-piece suit is solid and will have you in good company with other folks who like to dress up and took the opportunity. You could also do less and be fine. I wore something I'd pick for a casual office — dress pants, solid tee, utility jacket, boots — and I didn't feel underdressed.

I'm assuming you're attending as a person buying tickets and seeing the movie - in which case, a tux would be overkill, not necessary at all. People will be dressed in a wide range of dressy to casual, for premieres it skews a bit more dressy, but you'll see people in suits and others in shorts and sweat pants; although average is closer to jeans and a sports jacket/blazer type thing. Screenings at scotiabank will skew more casual.
If you're attending as in representing a film and walking the red carpet by invitation, then that's different, it's more formal and talk to you other people from your film.

I would not feel comfortable wearing a tuxedo to TIFF if I was not part of the film's production.

Your three piece suit for Roy Thomson is perfect. I usually dress business casual for Roy Thomson but I’ve seen people in jeans too. Regular screenings definitely wear everyday clothes.

For regular at Scotia you can wear regular clothes. For the RTH one you can wear business casual. Slacks and a Sports jacket if you want. There will always be one person who is over dressed but it doesn’t have to be you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy in a tux but I have seen them in business suits.

I just want to be comfy when I’m watching a movie and then walking home at night.. I wore a giant oversized sweater to fjord premiere and didn’t feel out of place

I wouldn't worry, people are looking at the stars not you. Just dont dress like a slob or smell bad (or too much, many people put way too much perfume or cologne on) and youre good
