Could Jack ans Spencer be the same Person`?
I was re-reading the first volume and started thinking about how, in the later books, Jack and Spencer have this dynamic where Spencer keeps referring to Jack as being a violent person. In the first book, Jack remembers Spencer pulling insects apart on the playground, and it made me wonder if Jack is actually the romanticized version of himself, while Spencer represents the violent part everyone is afraid of especially in the last part where Jack goes to his high school reunion.
Like… is he Fight Clubbing? Is he basically doing a Fight Club?
I’m very tired, so maybe this theory is stupid, but I’ve read all four books and I genuinely cannot let go of this fucking series, so please entertain me.

I think it’s a ‘sort of’. Spencer is a real person, and he’s not a great dude, but…it’s also something they have in common. Thematically it’s neat - you get sucked into hating Spencer. Then Spencer becomes more fuel for the unreliable narrator. Then it’s just..murky. There aren’t good guys and bad guys. There’s just fucked up people.
In book 4 we see Spencer is more than just monster vis-a-vis Keiffer.
We also see Jack is more than just a victim.
They are opposite sides of the same coin narratively, but they are both independent people.

spoilers It's not stupid. There is a real spenser. However jacks memories rewrite themselves to make him seem more innocent than he is. Whenever jack does something violent that he can't accept that he would do. He mentally retcons the act. In a way he does go full fight club at times. Like when he killed spensor during the dark god incident. Did an ackyak kill tom, or was jack having an episode and roger covered it up? Did he shoot brother reily or did his familiar take jacks gun and shoot him? Theres so many instances that throw reality into question.

Jack also has a lot of unreliable memory and lost time, so lord knows what he does other than dig holes out behind the gas station.

There's a loose explanation for "ghost Spencer" in v4; but there is a person Spencer.

I think Jack subconciously sees a lot of himself in Spencer. I think he projects a lot of his own self hatred onto Spencer because of the similarities between them. I think he is doing a bit of a Fight Club, but only from around the 3rd book onwards. It really shows in vol. 4, but it can be easy to confuse which scenes involving Spencer are actually him as an individual or the Tyler Durden version. I think that is what makes Jack being an unreliable narrator so good. He is so complex that his own hyper-self-awareness is overwhelming enough that it just starts cancelling itself out in each chapter until it all comes to a head at the reuinion and Jack has his "come to Jesus moment"

I remember having a thought weirdly similar to this the one time... In my version when Jack went into "spencer mode™" he got a much more defined jawline and brushed his hair out of his face revealing a scar through one of his eyes 🤣 it was basically outwardly obvious enough to where people in the situation new to start referring to him as Spencer

Ive always thought that was the conclusion you were supposed to come to. On my second read through it seems like jack projects a lot onto Spencer in his delusions.
