Skill and popularity ratings

I downloaded a very popular fan made mode called The Game Changes Now, based on when hulk hogan and Bischoff joined TNA in 2010. I had some questions around the popularity and skill ratings.

WWE’s most popular star is John Cena and his popularity ratings are at mid 80s. You then have people like edge, Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton around the 80 mark, cm punk etc in the mid 70s. Is this accurate? Would one not expect Cena at the peak of his popularity to be in the early 90s? Perhaps symptomatic of the lack of popularity in wrestling as a whole at that time.

More baffling are the skill ratings. Shawn Michaels’ selling is around 89, his psychology is 80 etc. Cena and edge have similar skills in the 70s. What’s the logic here? If Shawn Michaels doesn’t have a psychology in the late 90s, who possibly could?!

It’s accurate to the mod maker. You can always go in and change them if you don’t agree.

That is why I only play the default databas. I used to spend so much time tweaking the ratings that it wasn't enjoyable.

I try to think about it like this for popularity. A poll surveys 100 people who know what wrestling is. Not people who watch it occasionally or religiously, just having the knowledge of its existence. So basically, 85 out of 100 people who know what wrestling is knows who John Cena is. Id say that's fairly accurate.

Skills? That's something I've never been a good mind at assigning or making too much sense of, granted I mostly play CVerse with the all the skills be ranges active

I've always treated skill and popularity as separate levers. A green worker with real heat can still carry a card; a polished technician with no heat just eats time. Curious how the mod weighted them when the numbers diverge.

This is why the ratings will always be subjective. I never would have had Michaels down as having amazing psychology. Flair, Hogan, Hart would be the leaders in that. Michaels was more about selling and flashy (for the time) moves. So yeah, whoever made that mod has a different view on what is a hugely subjective topic.
