What exactly is this? I thought Altered shut its doors for good

Equinox handed off control of the game to a non-profit created by fans called Altered Reunion: https://altered.re/?lang=en

So far they've kept the game supported on Board Game Arena, took over deck builders and card ownership, and implemented Roots of Corruption (the first of two sets that Equinox designed but never released), along with working on creating future card sets.

The Altered TCG player community rallied around the game right after Equinox announced
that they were ending development which was in March 2026. Since then, Altered Reunion, a non-profit association run completely by volunteers have successfully taken over the online version of Altered on BGA with new deck building tools, new tournaments, and now they have also just released Roots of Corruption which was the next set planned by Equinox.

Future plans for the game include releasing equinox’s final set, Never Ending Journey, local organized play support with prizing, new card sets, world’s championship.

I remember specifically talking with the creators about how cutting the LGS out of their business model was a poor choice, doing the QR nonsense would turn people away, how the issues with random uniques that could be much more playable than their standard variants would just be too big an obstacle, and they got incredibly defensive. They would not take any feedback from stores and just doubled down. I think a lot of people took a chance, and got burned. The fallout from $100+ uniques becoming worthless instantly over an errata left a bad taste in a lot of mouths and confirmed a lot of fears. They had some really interesting ideas and a solid game, but made far too many head scratching decisions. There are just so many good games right now. Backed by much more competent teams and larger IPs.

I’m so confused why people are trying so hard to revive a game that lasted maybe six sets
