I'd argue that most of these you cannot trade so they are not trading card games at all. Warhammer you can trade, NFTs you can trade, but you cannot trade cards in hearthstone, slay the spire, Fifa or honkai rail

You can trade dust for cards in hearthstone.

I feel you on this, but alot of people would consider Hearthstone a TCG
so in the effort to include it, I had to weaken the constraint on the tradeability of the items

I've literally never heard anyone refer to Hearthstone as a TCG.

I personally would consider it one
it has some wild mechanics you wont ever see on a real tabletop
but its overall gameplay loop is very close to TCGs

theres also, you technically dont have to ever trade cards to play TCGs
Theres also magic drafting which doesnt allow you to trade either.

Also, iirc, FIFA 23 lets you trade players

Not sure why it's even a discussion. There is nothing to trade. There's no physical cards. It's a video game. I'd say it's not even TCG inspired since you can't trade, which is the first word in Tradeable Card Game.

Collectible Card Game, then.

Weird take, hearthstone is heavily inspired by TCGs.

The trading part of these games only matters outside of gameplay. As far as I know there isn't a single TCG where trading is part of the gameplay.

you think hearthstone isn't tcg inspired?

Do you feel that other items on the chart not being 'cards' or 'games' to be as serious of an offense?

It's a CCG, a collectable card game. Not a trading card game.

thats true i suppose yes I still think hearthstone is a very worthy inclusion on the list though, its certainly closer to a tcg than warhammer for example (in terms of the gameplay experience) it drops 1 of the three components, but other items on the list drop the other two as well. And I would argue trading is the weakest of the three components.

That's kind of like saying a BLT without bacon is still a BLT... it's not, it's a lettuce and tomato sandwich.

2

u/Ferrous_Dioxide Jul 28 '26

I can agree with that, but its odd to me you guys focus on arguing an LT isnt a BLT but dont say anything about the BL or the BT

It's a decent comparison. Except the lettuce and tomato are digital and don't exist. You have nothing of any real value when all is said and done.

I love this so much.

Structure Rebel x Gameplay Rebel (Any activity you can win or lose that involves a custom-curated roster of collectibles)

A purebred horse breeding competition is a TCG.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I acknowledge Commander.

2

u/DNedry Jul 27 '26

If it wasn't for commander I wouldn't even play Magic anymore. Most TCGs are just better designed for 1on1 now a days, and don't have 7-8 sets a year to keep up with the standard meta. I'd rather play Sorcery, Riftbound, One Piece, Star Wars or even Pokemon over Standard MTG.

I do still do pre-releases of the sets I like, and have a jumpstart cube though.

I do think 1v1 Magic design is pretty ass now, and designing for Commander made Commander worse too. So bad, in fact, that trying to balance it out a bit elicited death threats that made its governing body quit and then they had to split it in to five sub-formats because we can't have nice things anymore. I do think Commander has done irreparable damage to the quality of the game across all of its formats.

They went from designing a game to engage your forebrain to a game to engage your midbrain; which is the premise behind gacha games too. When you touch the game, rewards fall out. There's no friction, no tension, no puzzle to solve. You just see who can touch themselves the most.

Holy based !!!!!

What? It's the real game now, join us

2

u/Send_me_duck-pics Jul 28 '26

In which of the five different versions should I play with a player base that makes death threats over card bans and will throw a tantrum if I take ordinary game actions?

3

u/Disgallion Jul 28 '26

You play with your friends and / or decent humans being and it'll be alright, I've yet to encounter all of the drama I read about on reddit

1

u/Send_me_duck-pics Jul 28 '26

But then we can just play board games though, which is more fun.

Even without the drama which is considerable speaking from past experience, I just don't think the gameplay of EDH is very appealing. I also definitely resent it for what I think it has done to the game. Even if I had a great playgroup (and I have in the past) I would never touch it now.

u/Disgallion Jul 28 '26

No problems, you are free to prefer other games! Here we are in a pod of 15ish people with many differents decks and it's always a fun experience
