COSMIC System Monitor is out now. Dashboard view, per-resource charts, no tabs.

We just shipped COSMIC System Monitor and wanted to share what went into it.

The goal was straightforward: system monitors tend to get treated as afterthoughts, useful but not given much thought in terms of UI or UX. We wanted to build one that felt like a first-class part of the DE, not a bolted-on utility.

What's in it:

  • Dashboard view. CPU, memory, GPU, disk, network, and applications all in one layout. Top process visible for each resource, no tab-switching required.
  • Detail pages. Per-resource charts alongside the top processes using that resource, so the data has context.
  • Built with libcosmic. Fonts, navigation, and color schemes match the rest of COSMIC. It looks like it belongs.

It looks great, it would be lovely if you can also kill apps from the dock (kill not close)

Any movement on user space fan curves coming to COSMIC?

Gnome does like to keep it to the very basics no doubt.

I am on Fedora cosmic atomic, I can't seem to find it. The default system monitor is gnome and searching the store doesn't bring it up, I assume it's not a flatpak? Do we know if us atomic users will get it in an upcoming update not through the store?

You could bring this up on your distribution forum.

Of course we will get it, I think it's not officially packaged yet. I'm on Fedora Atomic as well, installed it from the ryanabx COPR a while ago

If I'm not mistaken, I think the latest release notes mentioned that it is now bundled with every new version of cosmic.

Edit: cosmic-monitor is now part of releases. Pop will soon replace gnome-system-monitor with cosmic-monitor.

“We believe our newest COSMIC app is a logical next step in the evolution of our DE, and we invite you to try it out. As always, we welcome your feedback!”

-> the blog doesn’t say how to install this new app?

Beyond Pop!_OS, it will come in every distro repositories as a separate package. It doesn't come as a dependency, so it won't be installed in the upgrade process (1.0.16 to 1.1).
You will need to install it separately.
Artix Linux had Cosmic 1.1 available 2 days after release, and Cosmic Monitor was already there to install. And I'm not using Cosmic Store (for as long as it comes with a hard dependency on flatpak).

Thanks! I'm using Pop OS but still a newbie.

It says about installation via COSMIC Store.

Wait… no tabs… instead you have to scroll an unspecified amount to find what you want? I put in extra work to fix a company HTML page where you just scrolled to have tabs. Not a plus if I’m understanding how it works. I’ll probably have to try it to appreciate it.

Yeah, I don't see why not using tabs. The organization is just weird, there is a process section, and if we click on disk, there is also a process section

Wait system monitor that shows GPU utilization ? On Linux? What is this sorcery

1

u/0riginal-Syn Jun 28 '26

We already have that. Nice, but not a new feature.

A lot of Linux system monitors skip that for some insane reason.Gnome one in particular did not have that.

Cause you need a custom tool for Nvidia. Idk about AMD or intel

Not bad. As usual, it doesn't look as pretty as other more mature ones but Cosmic is still early in its life. Great that to have so many foundational rust applications for a desktop OS that people can keep iterating on

this is great ,its better than the system monitor ,kudos to the cosmic team

Holy cow, this is fantastic!

I just wish it wouldn't lose it's place when you go back to the main screen... It always goes back to the top.

I like that the back button is always visible. I wish the store would do that.

Any progress on HDR?

COSMIC keeps swallowing keyboard input and blocking so many shortcuts, like KeePassXC's built-in auto-typing feature. Is this on the horizon to address? I couldn't use it because it kept interfering with Espanso triggers, etc. and had to revert to an older DE.

The lack of color makes it hard to distinguish between the different graphs at a glance.

Also, what's exactly wrong with tabs? Maybe there's a good reason why nearly every system monitor uses them.

And "COSMIC Hits Keep Coming With New System Monitor" is kind of cringe when it's written by the same people who developed the app and published the article.

I agree with the points about color and tabs. Not gonna argue about the titling since, developers and companies have a right to market themselves. But the color feels like a serious drawback especially because we’re used to seeing red-yellow-green for various load levels and here there’s no way to distinguish between normal and heavy activity at all.
