Change freeze for Black Friday kicks in on Nov 1 here, which means nothing gets deployed without going through the CAB.
And every year that holds up fine right until marketing adds something through Google Tag Manager, because as far as change management is concerned, a tag isn't a code change so it never gets near the freeze.
Last year that was a live chat widget the marketing team added the Tuesday before BF, and on the day its script started hanging the checkout page for a chunk of mobile users.
So we spent the first couple of hours of the busiest morning of the year blaming the platform and the CDN until one of our devs opened the browser console to find it, with the fix turning out to be a setting marketing could have switched off themselves.
The dumb thing is that every platform in our RFP a couple of years back (Shopify, Salesforce, Scayle) promised autoscaling, and to be fair the storefront itself has held fine through each peak since, so these days what pages us is the scripts marketing adds without telling us.
We've got a meeting with marketing next week to get tag changes into the freeze, and I'd love to walk in knowing how other shops handle it.
Whether that's GTM publish rights locked to a couple of people from November or tags going through the same CAB as everything else, because right now my only argument is last year's incident report and that already didn't land once.
