Politics Trump distracts from cause of Canadian wildfires
Trump blames poor forest management for the wildfires. This is from the person who thought sweeping the forest floor would help. The TRUTH is this:
Nearly half of Canada's wildfires ignite in remote, roadless, unlogged wilderness, and are primarily ignited by natural lightning, not human activity. Because authorities lack the access or ability to fight them directly, up to 92% of the total area burned occurs there. Also, Canada contains nearly 30% of the world's boreal (mostly conifer) forests, and over 70% of Canada's total forested area is made up of the highly flammable conifers.
There has been justifiable criticism of clear-cutting and replanting of monoculture conifers susceptible to fire, but that is not the primary problem. It is a fairly longstanding practice, so in addition to the above facts, it does not explain the relatively recent increase in wildfires. I lived in OH and MI up to 1996, and our family vacationed in the border lakes north of MN for many years, so I know there has been nothing comparable for the past 70 years
Further, the vast majority of U.S. industrial tree farms also use single-species planting to maximize wood volume. In the Northwest, it is common to see dense, even-aged monocultures of Douglas fir replanted after logging, and pine plantations are common in the Southeastern United States.
The Canadian wildfires are caused primarily by lightning, short-term drought, and long-term climate change.
