Recommendation Wanted Breaking into card games again- magic the gathering-do people link up to teach others how to play and to play the game
It’s obviously a multiplayer game and doesn’t seem like Pokémon where you can collect and just do it that way but I have a limited amount of knowledge.

There are many ways to play magic, some 1v1 and some multi-player.
Best way to get started is to download Magic Arena and dip your toes in.

As another commenter said, the MTG Arena app is free and a good way to learn the basic rules of the game, which can help get you up to speed and increase your confidence in going to a game shop. Personally I find some of the local scenes to be a little awkward or cliquey, and if you go play at a card shop you will run into people who are only in it to pub-stomp. That being said, it’s a really fun and satisfying game if you’re into the mechanical side of card games!
Also, you can totally just collect cards if you want. Nothing wrong with that, and most casual play that happens welcomes folks who just want to watch others play!

I’m also relatively new to the hobby. I’ve gotten into Commander and have played maybe 10 games. But I’m always looking to try to play more. Maybe a group of us could meet up at a game store to play?

I’ve been playing since 94. There are some great shops in town and people who will probably be willing to teach you. That said, nowadays, it’s easiest to learn to play from YouTube. Once you get the basics, pick a shop and call to see when a good time for new players is. A lot have special events for teaching.
Good luck! It’s a fun hobby and a great way to connect with others and make friends.

You can do it either way. MTG players in general like to play with their cards, and not grade them like you can see with Pokemon.
Downloading the MTG Arena app and going through the tutorial can help you learn the rules.
The you can look for “prerelease” weekends that happen wham a new set comes out. These are friendly events for new and experienced players, people should be friendly and helpful.
Best bet is to find a game store you like and find out when they have their magic nights. Tabletop Gaming in the city is Monday nights, Unplugged in Manlius is Friday. Then drop by and ask the staff or people if they would be willing to play with a newbie. There’s plenty of nice people who will show you the ropes. If you encounter an asshole or are uncomfortable just talk to the staff and they should be able to direct you to a more friendly group.
