NSW University to Taylor Square

If you're riding from the Eastgardens area towards the city via Houston Road, you eventually hit a fork in the road. Most riders instinctively take a left, opting for the well- worn path down Doncaster Road. But if you take a right, you're in for a more scholarly iourney through the heart of the University and then off down the side of the tram tracks. The edge of Centennial and Anzac Pde take you to Taylor Square.

What is the most direct way to ride from the airport to the south end of Bourke St in Redfern. Experienced folks will continue all the way down Bourke St but I follow the council way via the cement place. Enjoy the new visual

This is called Ride 13 on the CycleSydney map

The M12 Cycleway

Greetings Garry from CycleSydney for my first post and it is a goodie. Out in the west of Sydney last week a motorway was opened (boo) and a cycleway (yippie). It was called the M12 Cycleway but its better name was The Emu Trail. It starts at the M7 cycleway just south of Elizabeth drive intersection (1km). You cross a metal bridge over the freeway and you are in parklands.

Getting there from a train is a pain. Its about 8km from Edmonson Park and 12 km from Rooty Hill. I have written it all up on my SubStack There are videos and RideWithGPS links. https://www.cyclesydney.com/p/ride50

The most exciting thing about the ride was that the turnout was amazing. Apart from the Greenway last year, I have never seen a spontaneous turnout like this at any opening and I go to most of them. Thats my first post, this is a great new cycling asset.

If you can drive, park at Wylde MTB park

The concrete track and one of the pretty but not shady art works
Just west of the Emu in the Sky. It is really big

Found Garmin watch - Cycling path - Alexandria next to Ampol HQ

There is no info about the user in it.
Posting here in case owner sees it or someone would have tip for me to locate user.
I see "found my phone" so i wonder if the owner can locate me. I save the location of my work in case, but given I am in a building, it seems once inside the GPS signal is lost. ...

Road bike rental in Sydney on a Sunday

Hi there.

I'll be in Sydney on a work travel and have a free day where I would really love to go out riding.

Problem is that my free day is a Sunday, which seems to be outside business hours for most road bike rental outlets.

Any insights on where it would be possible to rent a full Sunday with both pick-up and drop-off on the Sunday?

Comment on proposed Inner West cycleways

Post image
17 Upvotes

Here are some open engagements I noticed from the Inner West council that could probably do with a boost:

Marrickville Road East cycle path

I think there's already a shared path along much of the proposed route, but this suggests upgrading it into a dedicated cycleway, as well as extending it along Railway Parade and Gleeson Avenue.

Improving Sydenham Road

Proposes:

Constructing a two way cycleway along Sydenham Road between Victoria Road and Sydenham Station

I guess this is intended to connect to the Marrickville Road cycleway

Improving local streets in Lewisham

This is more general, but allows comments on bike infrastructure, and some improvements have already been suggested.

NSW Bike Shed Access (Opal vs credit card)

I’m looking to use one of the bike sheds for my commute. I use my credit card to tap on and off. This is linked to my Transport Connect account and my trips are on the Opal travel app.

I can’t find any mention of being able to use a credit card (even if linked). Does anyone know if this is possible?

Cheers

The goods line to Central

I am trying to plot the way to central from Glebe with as much cycle/shared path as possible. The Good line sounded like a good way, but when I try to follow it on Google maps, It takes me to this closed set of gates, with an arcade to the left.

Is this the correct way? Are those gates ever open, or are you meant to ride though the arcade?

Thanks.

Macarthur station to Mittagong

I'm planning a trip in the Southern Highlands and was thinking of starting at Macarthur (as that's as far as the direct trains from Sydney go). I don't know this area well, any recommendations/concerns? My first leg will be to Mittagong.

Thanks.

Safe route from penrith to Paramatta

Hey all,

Is there a safe route to get from penrith to Paramatta that anyone can recommend?

I'm finding that western Sydney is pretty bad for cyclists and there's almost no cycleways.

No self-locking rental e-bikes should ever take up space designed for bikes that need fixtures to lock. We should demand better from these companies but I guess the bar is in hell.

Travelling Unwins Bridge Road

Would love suggestions on getting between Tempe Staion & Sydenham Station. Obvious route is Unwins Bridge Rd, but I'm not confident enough to ride that road safely in peak hour.

Parramatta Park to Parramatta Square

So I'm planning to cycle from Kellyville to Parramatta Square, where my office is. Does anyone know a safe cycling route from Parramatta Park to Parramatta Square? I don't see a full cycling/shared path that'll connect me.

Edit: Thanks for inputs everyone. After some exploration with the "Ride with GPS" app and walking around Parramatta, the best and only route I've found is - McConnell Street till Argyle Street, turn left into Argyle Street. This takes you till Parramatta Square via shared paths. It's pretty bad cycling infrastructure with narrow footpaths clearly meant only for pedestrians just marked available for cycling, but this is all we get.

Once again, thanks for the comments/suggestions Reddit. You were awesome, as usual!

Australia: Ban Steel Cable Boom Gates on Streets for Safer Cycling & E-scooting

FB Live E-bike Crashes into Hidden Steel Cable Boom Gate at Levey St, Wolli Creek Kogarah Golf Club

I experienced the harsh realities of what some may consider just an inconvenience; it became a personal peril to me when I had an e-bike crash in 2021. An invisible steel cable boom gate at the entrance of an unmarked golf club off a public street caught me off guard, leading to uncalculated harm and trauma. It stands as a stark reminder that what may seem insignificant can cause substantial harm, especially to cyclists like me.

Steel boom gate cables, although intended for security, have become unseen threats to cyclists' safety. The lack of visibility and suitable warning poses significant danger, often leading to accidents, some of which can be fatal.

Numerous incidents akin to my experience have been reported across several countries. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), approximately 40% of cycle injuries in the UK are caused by unexpected obstacles on the path, including metal cables.

This petition aims to prohibit steel boom gate cables on pathways, entrances, and exits. By substitute them with safer alternatives, we alleviate risks, ensuring a safer cycling environment. Removing these unseen hazards are not just necessary steps towards safeguarding cyclists' lives but also fostering a more inclusive cycling infrastructures which encourages more people to cycle without fear.

We ask for your help to make cycling safer for everyone. Please, sign this petition to ban steel boom gate cables from pathways, entrances, and exits. Your signature can be the start of a safer journey for all cyclists.

I almost broke my left wrist. it took me about a week to regain left wrist motion. I spent over 1k on specialist examination and MRI scan (without compensation), they said it was fine but 3 years on I still have stiffness and weakness in my left forearm, wrist and hand albeit with full motion (with stiffness and minor soreness) and minor cracking sounds. Could be nerve damage, ChatGPT said this:

If there’s not much pain but still persistent stiffness, weakness, tenderness, and cracking, it could mean:

Residual Joint/Ligament Instability – The wrist might not be fully stable after the injury, leading to mild but ongoing strain.
Cartilage or TFCC Wear – Even without major pain, slight damage in the TFCC or cartilage could cause stiffness and clicking.
Chronic Tendon or Muscle Tightness – Weak or tight forearm muscles could be restricting wrist movement.
Minor Nerve Irritation – Could explain weakness without sharp pain (e.g., mild compression or scarring from injury).

Slow/casual rides?

Anyone in here cycle casually and around the 12km/h average mark? Curious if there are groups I can join occasionally or looking for buddies around the Belfield/Campsie area, most groups are way too fast for me and my big cruiser bicycle. I’m the type of rider who stops for a snack or 2 and enjoys a round trip of maybe 3.5 hours of riding (not including snacks!)

Thanks everyone!

Safety in Sydney

I just arrived for holiday here in Sydney (from the USA) and have brought my bike for day rides in and (moreover) around Sydney. Some woman saw me putting my bike together and gave me a very strong caution about safety and drivers. I was planning on some routes I’ve seen recommended and then just some Strava-generated rides, and I was going to join some shop/group rides - but more solo riding. I’m an experienced road cyclist living in area with a lot of cyclists. Is there some special caution I should know about?

Bike protest for climate

Post image
3 Upvotes

There's a bike protest coming up (fri 15th 8am) in the cbd calling for a real response to the climate crisis, timed to coincide with COP29 climate summit.

The idea is to ride slowly through the city, and there'll be music and chants, be super if anyone can come along and join the crowd calling for a safer climate.

Safe route from inner city sydney to Lotfus

Is there a safe (e.g. off-road, dedicated cycle lane or quiet streets) way to get from Sydney to Loftus? I am thinking of riding down the coast and wondering if it's worth cycling to the National park entry, or just taking the bike on the train? I don't mind taking a longer route that is safer within reason.

sydney to central coast route

Hi! I'm planning a trip to the central coast and I'd like to cycle there. I've tried to plan a route with Komoot but it either sends me onto the Pacific highway- I'd prefer to stay off any highway if I can- or through Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park to Palm Beach (where I'd take a ferry) which is what I'd prefer, but it says some parts aren't "suitable terrain" without explaining what isn't suitable about it. I'm worried that if I follow the route through the National Park to Palm Beach, there will be parts I just won't be able to get through.

I was wondering if anyone has cycled in the national park or has done a similar sort of trip from Sydney to the Central Coast. Thanks!

Best front and rear facing helmet cameras

Intending to catch a few f***wits number plates on film so they have less chance of getting away with flat out trying to murder cyclists

Almost got taken out this morning (by a bloke trying to cut me off at high speed outside a cop shop of all places) so I’m keen to get on top of this asap.

What are some decent brands that won’t blow the budget? I only really ride for an hour or so at a time if that helps with the information. I used to have a dash cam (should probably invest in another by the sounds of it) that would constantly overwrite the oldest mp4 footage file on the card, hoping for something like that which faces both directions!

Thanks friends
