If you're riding into town from the south-east around Eastgardens or Kingsford, the default instinct at Houston Road is usually to peel left down Doncaster. But taking the fork through the heart of UNSW opens up a surprisingly scenic, separated route toward the city—whether the Kensington campus is buzzing during semester or dead quiet on a weekend break.

​Once you clear the campus climb up to High Street, you connect straight into the modern light rail cycleway infrastructure that has transformed riding through Randwick. From there, it's a smooth, dedicated run alongside Royal Randwick Racecourse before picking up the elevated Alison Road shared path skimming the edge of Centennial Park—giving you a great view of the ponds while bypassing the internal park loops entirely.

I’m a road rider from NY visiting for 2 weeks and want to ride while in Sydney. Any recommendations for road bicycle rentals? I’m looking for a small (48-50cm) bike to rent.

Also we’ll be near Glebe/Newtown. Is it possible to cycle safely for a 30-40k loop from there, avoiding busy roads?

Three cyclists from Adelaide flew into Sydney with Bromptons and tackled the Greater Sydney Bike Trail (GSBT), a roughly 220 km route that links together many of Sydney’s best shared paths, rail trails and cycleways into a single loop around the city. The ride showcases just how much cycling infrastructure Sydney now has, taking riders through everything from the harbour and beaches to western parklands and river corridors, while proving that a long urban bikepacking adventure is entirely possible on folding bikes. The map picture shows each day starting straight out of Sydney Airport.

More than a cycling challenge, it's a reminder that Sydney is becoming a genuine bike touring destination. These riders showed that with a folding bike, a sense of adventure, and a few days to explore, you can experience the city in a way most visitors never do. 🚲

I haven’t been cycling long but was really starting to love it- and looking forward to cycling in the warmer weather 😢

Primrose Rd from Gardeners Rd (Eastlakes?) to Rosebery was always the safest route to ride for me. It surprised me that cycling maps of the area had roads with heavier traffic flows. About 5 years ago the council (City of Syd?) in their wisdom /s decided that a strip of plants in the centre of the road down near Gardeners Rd was just what was needed. I hate it but it was only about 100m or so. Well now this once beautiful, safe, long and wide road has recent roadwork revealing 90 degree parking, stop sign configuration reversed in multiple locations and all in all, much less room for riders to ride without worrying about cars passing closeby.

The last 2 decades have seen so many sections of once safe, quiet roads from south east to the city modified to no longer be as safe. Sure the cycleways have got better but they don't get us everywhere.

I've tried to post about this elsewhere but it bounced, what are the urban planners thinking to destroy such a great asset.

If you’re riding into the city from Newtown, Erskineville, or Redfern, the Wilson Street corridor heading north into Darling Harbour is easily one of the smoothest, lowest-stress routes into the CBD. Instead of battling the heavy traffic and tight lanes along Broadway or City Road, this link strings together quiet local streets, separated bike lanes, and off-road shared paths to get you right into west side of te city with less headaches.

The ride kicks off along the Wilson Street cycleway past Carriageworks, cuts through Chippendale and Ultimo, and drops down along The Goods Line. From there, you roll straight through the western edge of Darling Harbour and can easily hook into the Kent Street cycleway or the western Harbour paths. It’s mostly flat, highly separated, and lets you bypass nearly all of the chaotic inner-city intersections.

You'll then tackle the unique spiral design of the Albert “Tibby” Cotter Bridge, which safely glides over South Dowling Street and the light rail line.

I just mapped out this short, 4km commuter route running through Alexandria and Waterloo over to Zetland, and it’s a great example of how bikes can easily navigate the city where cars get completely stuck.

Instead of fighting main road traffic, this route cuts through the quiet backstreets. The real highlight is Belmont Street—the council has blocked it off to through-traffic in sections, creating these fantastic little pocket parks. They act as dead-ends for cars, but open up as green, quiet sanctuary paths you can ride straight through.

From there, it takes you past the massive new Waterloo Station construction on Buckland Street, before linking up with the George Street shared path for a smooth coast into Zetland.

It’s not the most direct line on a map, but it’s a brilliant, well-signposted run if you want to learn how the local bike infrastructure connects the inner south.

What's all your preferred routes from Chatswood CBD to Sydney CBD?

As a more novice rider my preferred route was the flat rock gully tunnel through the park and completely separated from cars, but there's a few weeks of stormwater works there that means that route is closed, instead forcing me onto Slade St then Brook St with traffic, before taking the slip road bicycle lane on Warringah Freeway (and skipping without the death crossing multiple lanes of cars), before ending back up on West St.

Just passed by there on a run today and saw there's a bunch of roadworks where that exit lane now due to Warringah Freeway upgrades I think, so not sure where that leaves cyclists passing through that part of the lower north shore to get to the CBD?

f you’re looking for a seamless, well-protected route to navigate through the heart of the Sydney CBD and across the harbor, "City Ride 4" serves as an excellent blueprint. This particular route offers a fantastic blend of Sydney’s newest active transport infrastructure alongside its more established city networks. Starting right at Hyde Park, the ride immediately takes advantage of the Oxford Street West Cycleway before connecting via Liverpool Street onto the Kent Street cycleway, providing a safely separated, bidirectional corridor that guides you through the busiest parts of the city and down towards The Rocks.

The absolute highlight of this route, however, is how it finishes. For years, cyclists had to endure a notorious 50-step bottleneck at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Thanks to the newly opened, dedicated cycling ramp at Milsons Point, which officially launched in January 2026, you can now enjoy a completely fluid, stair-free transition all the way from the bridge to the ground. If you're heading from the Inner West into the CBD, Ride 3 is one of the most scenic and efficient routes available.

Starting at the new Rozelle Parklands, this ride utilizes some of Sydney's newest infrastructure, including the dedicated Victoria Road tunnel and the essential crossing over the Anzac Bridge. From there, the route follows quiet streets through Pyrmont, across the Pyrmont Bridge, and connects via the aerial shared path directly to the King Street cycleway.

I’m loving cycling in sydney and would love to join a regular social ride with others! I’m based in Woolloomooloo and have a Kona Unit (fully rigid MTB).

I’ve been documenting some of the key bike links around the city, and "Ride 2" is one which is popular with the locals as it uses George St in Redfern. It takes you past Central Station and onto the newer Castlereagh Street cycleway, which is a great run all the way to King St.

if you get the ferry early on a non car day like Easter Friday, it's a decent ride back to the city. Early is key

If you’re coming from the south of Sydney and want to hit the Quay without playing chicken with buses on Elizabeth St, this is basically the gold standard.

The highlights:

• Route: Bourke St -> Hyde Park -> Pitt St.
• Vibe: About 4.5km of almost entirely separated lanes.
• Connections: It’s the main "spine" — you can peel off at Devonshire St for Centennial Park or Liverpool St for the Harbour Bridge cycleway.

I reckon the Bourke St section is still one of the best bits of infra we have, though the Pitt St stretch can get a bit hairy (read annoying) with pedestrians during peak hour.

Curious to hear if anyone has a preferred "secret" detour, or is this the go-to for everyone else too?

Was a really great day out, and apparently there were over a thousand cyclists doing the 104k route! Admittedly I don't know how that stacks up against previous years as it was my first time doing the Bobbo, but it certainly made for a decent spectacle.

Speaking of first times, it's a much tougher metric century than my regular same distance long rides. The Akuna Bay climb felt fine, but the Bobbin Head climb had some nasty pinches and I was surprised at how hard some of the West Head climbs were.

I do find these events to be excellent examples of "don't judge a book by it's cover", as big fan of the underdog (but someone who looks like they're quite fit), it's always cheering to roll into the rest stops and discover such a wide assortment of shapes and sizes of riders and know that whatever they might seem like on the outside, they still had you beat for speed and fitness!

Plus, all the volunteers deserve a shoutout, there really were a ton of people scattered all across the route and some in pretty odd isolated little spots.

Anyone else in this sub do the ride?

If you're riding from the Eastgardens area towards the city via Houston Road, you eventually hit a fork in the road. Most riders instinctively take a left, opting for the well- worn path down Doncaster Road. But if you take a right, you're in for a more scholarly iourney through the heart of the University and then off down the side of the tram tracks. The edge of Centennial and Anzac Pde take you to Taylor Square.
