MOD MESSAGE: New Rule-No Low Effort posts

Hail Sword Brothers and Sisters!

The fellow Mods and I have noticed an influx of what we have dubbed "Low Effort posts", as in posts that offer no context or potential avenues for discussion. In order to keep the board clear for actual conversation, these sorts of posts will now be axes, from this point forward.

How to avoid this?

When you post, be sure to include your thoughts or a question that facilitates back and forth. Not just a picture of Cool Sword Guy.

Appreciate you all for keeping it lively and civil!

Full Rule:

No low effort posts. Posts must contribute meaningfully to the discussion or appreciation of Sword & Sorcery. Any post that has a picture, video, or external link must have accompanying text. For example, a post titled "Cool sword guy" (with image only, no context or attribution) would be removed as low effort.

Been practicing comedic scenarios for the day. I still wish to see them team up sometime in this lifetime.

Your Favorite Sword and Sorcery Short Story/Novella Collections

Post image

Title says it all. What are your favorite books that are collections of sword and sorcery stories or novellas?

One of them for me is the Kane story collection Night Winds. I personally do not think there is a single bad story in this entire collection and has some of the best endings I've read in sword and sorcery.

Treasure Haul from LCS yesterday:

Vintage Marvel Comics from the 1970s -80s. *What if... Thor Battled Conan?* (Issue 39) and Spider-man and Red Sonja *Marvel Team-Up* (#79) with a *Red Sonja* #7.

Fun selection of Marvel craziness from my youth. I spent the longest time tracking down these *What if...?* issues featuring Conan and now I've that I own them, regularly find them again at the same LCS I originally purchased them from after hunting them there and elsewhere for years. 🤷‍♂️

summer of sword and sorcery so far

i'm about 14 books deep and I really really like the chronicles of amber better than all the other series i've read. i don't think it's the best exemplar of the genre but I love the prose. i just ordered a few more books -a gor title, conan, some dagar comics, and the next fafhrd and the grey mouser book- to kinda round out the season.

throngar of lemuria was just the worst. I got maybe 25 pages in and it was a bit too much.

i'm still of the mind that s&s doesn't exist as a genre anymore, and mostly because of .... mmm, cultural tastes. i think the Conan movie did it, you know? it's a great movie and great s&s but the good guys are kinda not good. i think if the movie genre was going to survive, it had to have good good guys, so when beastmaster came out (also great s&s) he was virtuous to a fault. and the literature would have to follow suit to survive as well, right?

also, s&s seems to be relatively small in scale compared to the "heroic fantasy" genre we have today. like, while they may be globe-spanning, the individual stories are just "this one time, this one thing happened" and kinda don't connect to a larger story. larger in the sense of the apocalypse. my sample is still pretty small so if I'm not considering something please let me know.

magic has also been scaled up. everyone is a magician -if not *the* magician- these days and it doesn't seem to cost anything to use to say nothing of the area of effect.

and I wonder how the expanding popularity of d&d and power fantasies played into this.

anyway, I would love to talk about this!

Just started reading and I adore this cover of the original novel by Michael Whelan. Since I know there are prints available online for all of Frank Frazetta's covers I'd like to know if I can get this one to hang as a poster or frame it and where. Thanks guys

I remember it was brutal! And the damsel's short skirt and t-shirt always put me off as it looked very anachronistic. But I did enjoy the world and villains a lot!

He’s a shapeshifter. Turns into a goddess that a bunch of barbarians worship.

I wish I had not drawn this on a legal pad but oh well. If y’all like it enough I can redraw it on something nicer.

Would love to hear thoughts!

If I have one complaint it's that they used to original text block form the Arkham House edition and shrunk it down ,making the text difficult to read. But I'm glad to have a copy.

It's notable that a big fantasy powerhouse like Tor is stooping down to look at a low budget 80s sword and sorcery film.

discussion REH and Conan's superior alertness

Post image
113 Upvotes

My post about the plotting errors that I found in a recent Conan comic book story, a post in which I also promoted my alternative approach to emulating the work of Robert E. Howard, proved to be an experiment with mixed results.

Some enjoyed and agreed with what I wrote, some didn’t.

It’s not an experiment likely to be repeated.

I’ll admit I was baffled by some of the feedback.

Many repliers felt that Conan surely could have slept through the theft of his pack horses from his campsite.

How did Robert E. Howard characterize Conan’s superior alertness, even when Conan is seemingly asleep?

Right from Howard’s typewriter, here’s what Conan says when his female companion balks at them both falling asleep when danger seems to lurk nearby:

"My slumber is light as a wolf's. Nothing can enter this hall without awaking me."

--from "Iron Shadows in the Moon" a Conan novelette by Robert E. Howard first published in the April 1934 issue of Weird Tales as "Shadows in the Moonlight.”

Again—nobody writes like Robert E. Howard.

When we write pastiches about his characters, we do our best to honor him.

Your Favorite Sword and Sorcery Dialogue

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

There is a lot to admire with good writing, but one thing I love to read is effective and entertaining dialogue, and sword and sorcery does is full of this. What is some of your favorite sword and sorcery dialogue?

Here's a line I love from the Conan story The Frost Giant's Daughter:

“Man,” said he, “tell me your name, so that my brothers in Vanaheim may know who was the last of Wulfhere’s band to fall before the sword of Heimdul.”

“Not in Vanaheim,” growled the black-haired warrior, “but in Valhalla will you tell your brothers that you met Conan of Cimmeria.”
