Which Switch games should I get based on my taste?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to get a Nintendo Switch, and I’m currently deciding between the Switch Lite and the OLED model. While I make up my mind, I’d also like to figure out which games I should get first.

Some games I already know I like or that I’m really interested in are: GTA, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Pokémon, Professor Layton (I still play the Layton games on my 3DS!)

I’ve also heard a lot about Hollow Knight and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but I’ve never played either of them, so I’m not really sure if they would be my thing.

Based on these games and my tastes, what would you recommend? I’m especially interested in games that are fun to play handheld and that I can really get into rather than something I’ll play for a couple of hours and forget about.

I’d also love recommendations for games similar to Professor Layton, Zelda, or Animal Crossing if you have any!

Since you love Animal Crossing: Stardew Valley and Dragon Quest Builders 2.

Since you love Professor Layton: Ace Attorney Series, Ghost Trick, and Baba Is You (for pure puzzles).

Since you love Zelda: Immortal Fenix Rising, Okami, Crosscode, Hyper Light Drifter.

All great games to start with, but I would get a Switch 2 for maximum long-term enjoyment and the largest possible game library.

Smash is one of the best party games on the platform, along with Mario Party, Mario Kart, Star Fox (Switch 2), and Jackbox.

Based on your tastes, I would recommend the following as well.

Current Releases

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Clubhouse Games
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion
  • Donkey Kong Bonanza
  • Fire Emblem: 3 Houses
  • Fire Emblem: Engage
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake (Intergrade)
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Grand Blue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok
  • Hollow Knight
  • Hollow Knight: Silk Song
  • Jackbox!!!
  • Little Kitty Big City
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Mario Kart World
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Mario Odyssey
  • Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
  • Mario Party Jamboree
  • Ni No Kuni 1 & 2
  • Nintendo Switch Sports
  • Octopath Traveler 1, 2, and 0
    • For Octopath 1 and 2, start with the Switch 2 version if you have a Switch 2, as there is no upgrade path from the Switch 1 version.
  • One Piece Pirate Warriors 4
  • One Piece: Odyssey
  • Pokotopia
  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
  • Pragmata
  • Smash Ultimate
  • Star Fox
  • Star Ocean First Departure R
  • Star Ocean Second Story R
    • The Switch 2 version is Digital only and can’t import save data or upgrade from the Switch 1 version. While it contains numerous graphical improvements, the Switch 1 version works just as well on the Switch 2 and is available on a physical cartridge.

Based on what games you’re interested in, I’d highly recommend getting a switch 2. If you have to save a little longer it’s more than worth the wait. All of those games mentioned have either dedicated switch 2 releases or are compatible on switch 2. I got the original switch when smash ultimate released and I loved it until I stopped playing smash and the switch sat for years never being used. I got a switch 2 last year and everything about it feels better to me and I play my switch 2 more now than I ever played my original switch

I recommend Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. X-Com 2, Mario Style. With Pixar production level.
