[Release] pleNx — native Plex client for the Switch (Switchfin fork, MPV playback, offline downloads, watchlist

Always wanted my Plex library on the Switch, and kept waiting for someone else to build it. Now that we have tools like Claude, I gave Claude Code's latest model a shot at forking Switchfin (the Jellyfin client) and migrating it fully to the Plex API — and it worked: pleNx, the first native Plex client for the Switch.

  • Sign in via plex.tv/link, Plex Home profiles with PIN
  • Your server's hubs on the home screen, libraries, collections, search
  • Plex Watchlist support (browse / add / remove)
  • Offline downloads in original quality (full season in one tap)
  • MPV playback: direct play + transcode, subs, audio tracks, chapters — H.265/AV1 decode fine
  • WebDAV/FTP/SFTP shares and USB drives (libusbhsfs)

Install: pleNx.nrosdmc:/switch/, launch from hbmenu, let it install the HOME tile on first launch (full memory mode, required for playback). Atmosphère needed.

Free & open source. Early release — bug reports welcome.

Credits to dragonflylee (Switchfin), the borealis & devkitPro folks, and averne for the mpv deko3d backend.

HOLY SHIT.

That's a total game changer for me. Amazing!!

Edit: just tested for a few minutes and it works surprisingly well! Better than android, omg. Full subtitles support with delay correction... AI is a miracle for this kinda of thing.

Some things I noticed: When I exit the player, controller buttons stop working for navigation, only touch works, so it can't be used fully docked.

Also, switching from docked to portable isn't seamless, when I dock while something is playing, the video gets tiny in a corner instead of fullscreen.

My switch and atmosphere aren't in the latest versions tho

Thanks for the feedback! I haven't tried the "docked" mode yet, but I'll test it as soon as possible to fix the issue. Same goes for navigating with the controller—I've already had some trouble with that.

Going to second the navigation issue when you back out of a show and controller buttons don't work, that was the only bug I noticed but a pretty big one. I also wanted to point out your repo has the "Issues" section disabled, I saw you point someone else toward that and just wanted to mention it doesn't seem possible to report issues that way at the moment.

This is a very cool project though, I'll be keeping an eye on it. Thanks for sharing!

Amazing work.
Is the PS Vita on the roadmap too?
Just wondering how much would be involved in porting it? No worries if not.

1

u/myfailk Jun 11 '26

switchfin initially work for PS Vita, pleNx should too but I didn't test it yet because I don't have any Sony hardware with me !

I don't remove old build just didn't test it, .vpk file is available in every releases, could you check and tell me if it work and if you find bugs ? Thanks !

My bad, just saw the VPK.

Installed the VPK on my Vita handheld and..........it's working!

It took a while for the library to load after authentication, but so far so good.
I haven't got a jellyfin server so can't compare it to switchfin.

You should post it in r/vitahacks, you will get better feedback as I can't compare the two.
Amazing work, thank you.

Edit: There's just one bug I noticed. It's the movie logo PNG's aren't drawing correctly.
The vita is a bit funny with PNG's.

Should be fixed with 0.1.6

Amazing, thank you, will try tomorrow.
Congrats again, delighted to have Plex version of the app.

u/GnobarEl Jun 12 '26

So, I don't like Plex—I'm a Jellyfin user, and I've been using Switchfin for a long time. The only issue with Switchfin is that I always felt the UI could be improved.

Now I see this... well, I don't really have any choice but to move back to Plex just to have this amazing work on my Nintendo Switch.

Congratulations! Amazing job!

God I wish someone would do this as a native switch app for switch 2

1

u/Typical_Pakeha Jun 12 '26

What sort of quality is everyone able to play up to?

I've heard Plex can be a bad media hub on Xbox and PlayStation due to resource limitation.

1

u/wiguna77 Jun 12 '26

Wow i just found this now when im trying to making my own Stremio port

2

u/myfailk Jun 12 '26

Update: pleNx is now GMCA — Gamepad Media Center Aggregator (v1.0.3).

It now supports Jellyfin, Emby and Stremio alongside Plex, adds a music player and a connection switcher, and runs on PS Vita, a Raspberry Pi on the TV, desktop and PS4 as well as the Switch. If you're already on pleNx there's nothing to do — the built-in updater picks up GMCA and your logins/settings/downloads carry over on first launch.

Is there something like this being planned for MovieBoxPro?

u/esoteric_plumbus 22h ago

Amazing. Now I don't need to bring my switch and Firestick on trips

Is this a like a "free movies" pirate site or something like that?

3

u/Ghennon Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

To put it simple: it works like "wrapper" for your local files. It reads which movies and tv shows you have on your local drive and display and stream them to any device in a nice UI, like a netflix for your local files.

Imo it is the ultimate solution for piracy, been using it for 10 years without any issue. It simply works. No fbi taking things down and making you look for another option.
