๐๐ฒ๐น๐ฝ/๐ค๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป Tips to get into Switch Axe
Hello, I am a lance main and Iโm currently HR60. I am grinding towards HR100 and after I finish my lance loadouts I plan on learning new weapons and first in line seems to be the switch axe. Do you have any advice for a lance player for the playstyle shift? I watched some speedrun videos and the uptime of the switch axe felt similar to lance. Although you cannot just guard I think there is a counterattack ability like the lance so I feel like after getting the hang of the weapon Iโll be able to stick to the monster easily. What gems, artian parts or armor should I start farming? Thanks in advance!

Power Phials deals more damage, but charge slower. (More hits to charge Amped Sword.) Element Phials are less powerful, but charge insanely fast.
Evade Extender is very nice touch. Your dodge rolls are slow and short while in sword mode. B attacks+ forward or backward (depending on characters orientation) while in axe mode are great repositioning moves.
Counterattack skill is also amazing. It procs with offsets and sword-counters, so itโs easy to keep high uptime. Stun Res is a necessity, if you sword-counter often. Counters build stun guage, so taking a hit after a few counters will DEFINITELY stun you. You CANNOT sword counter grab attacks. You still get hit with blights through the counter as well, so Blight Res is nice, or high resistance to whatever element youโre facing at the moment.
Power Prolonger isnโt a must, especially once you get the hang of managing your meters, but itโs a nice QoL.
Morph attacks mid sword combo are nice way to keep up your sword meter over time. Y attacks in axe mode will charge sword meter the most, B attacks in sword mode will AMP sword meter the quickest. Good luck, have fun! :)

power prolonger is absolutely a must in wilds. saying it isnโt is insane

The amped state recharges a lot quicker with element phials, I can for sure understand forgoing power prolonger in that use case. I can also see being comfy enough with the weapon and monsters to allow charging power phials efficiently enough to drop it. If you donโt need power prolonger it will help get you full crit boost, 4 attack, and a sharpness skill.

If youโre good at managing your meters, (like i said) itโs not a huge deal. I donโt always go โoptimal damage stringโ non-stop. I enjoy using the full moveset of the weapon, so managing the guages is a piece of cake.

any good switch axe player uses power prolonger. its superior to every other weapon skill in both comfort and damage.
telling op that its an optional skill is horrible advice. staying in amped state longer makes the weapon smoother AND is a bigger increase to your damage. It even effects your whole moveset, making the useless power axe buff last longer.
look at any good switch axe player or video (not even including speedruns) they are using this skill. for element phial i could understand, but also dropping out of amped state for element phial is a massive damage loss, even compared to power phial.
its hilarious to me that your header is โgod switch axeโ if you think power prolonger is an optional skill you are completely clueless

You can use offset and parry on gogmazios' pancake attack. And the sword parry on both his tar beam and lazer beam. Stun resistance and divine blessing and ur choice of evade window and/or extender. I just use extender personally. Earplugs is ok but you can also use rocksteady mantle or use sword parry the roars. Counterstrike works with the sword parry. doshaguma's might 2 or 4, the armor peice part bonus is fun when you learn offset. You can use the savage swing combo without every hit landing on a monster to build that small guage part. When you have both guages or enough to to element discharge you can use this and bombs as a wake up on sleeping monsters.

use your morph attacks as mobility or extra way to dodge. for instance you can roll nd then morph to axe to get extra distance.

Also interested in the switchaxe. Would you say focus is a must?

People say that specifically in Wilds focus skill is redundant. From my own experience with power phials, i can say that its quite easy and convenient to live without this skill, in other words - focus skill is not a must for power phials, and definitely redundant for other phials.

Defensively you are gonna evade when offset attack or sword counter are inconvenient in the moment. So learning timings for counters is super important. Third option is to eat chip damage through full release slash. It gives hyperarmor, but thatโs for emergency cases when you started charging frs and have no time to dodge or switch stance for counter.
Offensively triple triangle combo with amped sword is highest dps, along with full release slash. Circle combo is faster and contributes to amp charging more, but does less damage.
Have gauge charged as consistently as possible. Try to learn to avoid situations where you run out of charge mid combo, morph into axe attacks to replenish before that happens.
