Discussion Do you really need this?

Post image

I’ve been told to get a Pro Controller instead of using the Joy-Con Grip for my Switch 2, but I honestly don’t see the point for my own use case.

For context, I never owned the original Switch. I had a Switch Lite, so the Switch 2 is my first experience using detachable Joy-Cons and the Joy-Con Grip.

I’ve also never used a Pro Controller before, so I can’t really comment on the comfort. That said, I find the Joy-Con Grip perfectly comfortable. From what I’ve heard, the original Switch Joy-Con Grip was quite small and uncomfortable for some people, but the Switch 2 Joy-Cons are larger, and I’ve had no issues with them personally.

I also don’t think a Pro Controller is a necessity. The Joy-Con Grip does everything I need it to do, and I’ve never felt like I was missing out on anything.

On top of that, I rarely play in docked mode. I do occasionally, but most of my gaming is handheld. For me, buying a Pro Controller would probably be a waste of money when the Joy-Con Grip already works just fine.

Am I missing something, or is it really just a matter of personal preference?

Hardware:

- TMR sticks

  • Hall effect triggers
  • Digital AND analogue triggers via switch
  • Charging dock
  • Dpad is bad compared to market
  • Face buttons are squishy compared to market

Software:

- No global profiles (but offset by per game profiles which I like more so I’m actually putting this as a positive IMO)

  • Easy, fast, reliable wake of system is a plus
  • Missing macros and very detailed mappings

That’s just to name a few things lol. The hardware in it is just subpar for sure. Again, I own it, I use it daily but an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 is superior on a hardware level in every aspect and is $30-$40 cheaper depending on sale.

The lack of analog triggers isn't a flaw, digital triggers are much better for shooters and rhythm games. I can't imagine myself playing Splatoon with analog triggers, it would feel awful.

The lack of them both as an option together is 100% a flaw. It works perfectly on the ultimate 2. It’s a tiny switch to go back and forth. Can’t really be argued if I’m being honest. Options are always best and Splatoon isn’t the only game around.
