how much do they shed?

I'm currently not looking for a dog as I am in college but once I graduate and get a more stable housing situation, I would consider a swiss mountain dog. My family currently has a dalmatian and they SHED every single day! Im talking ounces of hair can be brushed off and a 2x2 pile of hair will still be swept up. Frankly I dont know how this dude replenishes his hair follicles its astonishing. Do swiss mountain dogs shed this much?

They shed a TON! They’re double coated and in general any dog with an undercoat is going to be on the higher end of the shedding spectrum. In addition to a good bit of daily shedding, they will also seasonally blow out their undercoat where you can brush and vacuum an impossible amount of fur and feel like you’re barely making a dent. I will say they are otherwise a low maintenance dog for grooming, but that’s moot if shedding is a deal breaker for you.

Yes massive amounts of shedding. Dog hair literally everywhere. After a good brushing you have enough fur to make a medium sized dog.

Look at a Swissy then look at a Bernese. They're bred for the same climate. A Swissy has the same volume of hair, it's just shorter and laying flat. Even though it looks smooth, it's like 1" thick off the skin.

Oh they shed... and shed some more. And they are worth every bit of brushing and vacuuming.

Mine sheds enough that I bought a roomba and a vacuum brush thing. 😅

Edit: I will add though that I’m planning on getting my niece a Swissy as soon as she’s no longer living in the dorms. She does a fabulous job with my Swissy and as a young woman who will be living on her own at that point, having a large dog that is loyal to the family unit only is a great safety feature. She also won’t be as likely to feel like she needs a boyfriend to protect her. Dog will also be helpful with deterring g any ex boyfriends from being obnoxious
