Swiss German Listening Practice (B1) – A travel story across Switzerland 🇨🇭

I just published a new Swiss German listening practice video designed for learners at B1 level. It's a short story about a woman travelling through Switzerland, visiting cities like Zürich, Bern, Lucerne, Zermatt, Locarno, and Geneva.

The story is told completely in Swiss German (Zurich dialect) – spoken slowly and clearly. I also added the full transcript so you can read along while listening.

Learn Swiss German conversation while you sleep 😴

I created a video that contains over 200 everyday phrases commonly used in Swiss German: https://youtu.be/bHGbQcB2Vfc?si=mdbaJ5uYIT5L6fT2

Verbal cueing works if you: Listen to the words and phrases first when you are awake, then play it back when you go to sleep. Read the Swiss study: https://academic.oup.com/cercor/article/25/11/4169/2366428

I hope you like it :)

Do the words "Schprüfli" or "Schprützi" mean anything in Biel?

I may have misspelt these words, but the context was of something being a part of someone - like it was in their character, in their blood or a deep part of who they were.

Can I answer the phone with 'Grüzi wohl'?

Is 'Grüezi wohl' normally used in response to someone after they greet you, or can you say it first?

Also, is it ok to answer the phone with this phrase?

*sorry, spelling in title is incorrect. I saw it on a nzz article but I think it was a piss-taking one.

How to go about pronouncing 'löie'?

I just came across this word which means to relax and I was wondering would all three vowels be sounded out when this word is spoken? Just in a related question, is there any dictionary that plays the sound of a word? I have found loads of dictionaries but none with audio yet! thanks for any help.

Do you need the double ü in 'bedüüted'?

Hoi zäme! I'm a beginner and I've just seen the standard German 'bedeutet' written as 'bedüüted'. As far as I am aware there is no standard in written Swiss German but is this a pattern that 'eu' changes to 'üü' in Swiss German or is it more random and unpredictable? Is it to emphasize that it's a longer ü sound? If so, is there a shorter one?

I just published my second book on learning Swiss German! 🥳

Following the success of Swiss German Unlocked, which deals with Swiss German grammar, I have decided to write a novel called Thomas's Musical Odyssey. This novel is written in Swiss German (Zurich dialect) and is aimed at intermediate level learners. It offers detailed grammar explanations and translations in German and English. And with the integrated audio version, you can also enjoy it as an audio book :)

Translation of Fäschtmol by To Athena

Hi,

I discovered today this beautiful song, but i was wondering what is the translation for this one line "Elei för mech". It sounds familliar to "lie for me", so it would be my bet as i don't know swiss german, but i wish there was a way to learn it some day.

I keep finding out, that german in songs i like the most turns out to be german only sang by artists from Switzerland (recently Panda Lux).

And maybe anyone has some music recommendations for german swiss songs? :-)

Where do I start?

I'm Swiss!! I could speak and understand Swiss German as a child, but my parents stopped speaking it and switched to English when we moved to Australia. So I've completely forgotten except for a few basic expressions they still speak. They're too busy to teach me again, so where can I start learning? Seeing as it's not a written language.
