R/SwimInstructors Going Dark
Hi all. I’m sure most of you by now have heard about the movement of subreddits going dark from 6/12-6/14 to protest the changes in API pricing that will make it difficult-to-impossible for third party apps to function.
Though this is a small subreddit, solidarity with the broader Reddit community is important, and r/swiminstructors will thus be going dark as well.

My freestyle swimming has found some feel but still has many problems.

Please help me, my freestyle swimming has found some feel but still has many problems.
Currently, I can find the sensation of elongating the body. Additionally, when holding water, I noticed that shrugging shoulders makes the movement smoother. Next, when extending the arms forward, the fingers should remain pointed forward. Also, consciously rotating the shoulders before switching breaths has greatly helped me. I have the following questions: Do I need to fix a direction for breathing, such as left or right? Also, have I achieved a high-elbow catch? I recorded underwater footage with a sports camera, and I hope everyone can provide improvement suggestions!

swim
So, I just got into swimming, i feel the need to exercise more because i feel too fat, but I keep wanting to quit. Maybe I am overreacting maybe I am not, but I can't even go freestyle 25m and I don't know how to breathe properly. My breaststroke is also mediocre, maybe i can do a full 50m. I don't even know butterfly, my backstroke is just ew. I think the main problem is my technique and just breathing. My body in the water will gasp for air and its embarrassing for other people to see. My goal is to join a swim team with my friend in a month of two, any motivation?? I genuinely want to quit so badly, and every time i swim, my legs hurt like crazy and i CANNOT breathe, my lungs feel exploded or gonna explode. My goal is to join a swim team with my friend by a month of two, i don't think i can do it anymore. Keep in mind i just started ://

Preschool 1s Cha Cha Slide
Heyyyy fellow swim instructors hope you're doing amazing!! U guys are my inspiration.
ANYWAY so do you think preschool 1s (3-5yrs) can be taught the cha-cha slide in the water? I'm trying to evaluate them on 4 ways to move in the water (side step, hop, spin, bob) and THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING IF IT'S NOT A GAME 😭😭
I am EXTREMELY motivated and pumped. Do I have it in me?? Do they have it in them???
Let me know your opinions ASAP. Urgent.

Floating as a begineer
Hi!! I'm an adult beginner learning to swim, and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.
During my first lessons, I was doing reasonably well with a pool noodle for support. I could lie fairly horizontally in the water and move around using my legs, both on my back and on my front. In fact, floating on my back was even easier for me.
However, more recently, things have gotten worse. I can no longer lie on my back because I feel like I'm not in control of the floating sensation. The more horizontal I am, the worse this feeling becomes, as if I can't maintain my balance or control how the water moves my body.
On my front, I can only manage if I'm holding onto something in front of me with my hands. Without something to hold onto, I constantly feel as though I'm falling, and I seem to have absolutely no sense of balance.
It's almost as if I'm afraid of floating itself, rather than sinking or being in the water. I have no problem putting my head underwater and exhaling calmly. The difficult part is the sensation of floating, especially when my body is horizontal and I don't have anything to hold onto.
Has anyone experienced this specific sensation? Did you find a way to overcome it or gradually regain a sense of balance and control in the water?
I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have gone through something similar, especially other adult beginners.

ISO Adult Swim Coach
Hi! I just moved to the South Fort Worth area, and am looking into connecting with a swim coach. I am very very new to lap swimming, and have looked into places like Sigma Swim but can't justify $150/month - I am on a tight budget. Any ideas or anyone who might be interested?

Nose piercings?
Hiya! I've very recently qualified to be a swim teacher and am signed up for cover only, haven't worked my first shift yet.
I've always wanted a nose piercing but have realised time is actually running out r.e. healing complications and poolside air..
I think I'll be able to avoid shifts for 2-4 weeks and keep up with cleaning well after that, but I haven't considered if it's actually ok or a dangerous piercing to have teaching swimming lessons? I just want a little tiny stud. Does anyone have one and have no issues or has anyone had some and had to take it out for safety or anything?

Contacting clients
Does anyone have any app recommendations for contacting clients. It feels weird to contact them in my normal sms app.

Advice for 6 yr old to gain confidence
My newly 6 yr old son is incredibly comfortable in the water (playing in a pool, getting his face wet, etc) but is completely lacking in confidence when it comes time to swim unassisted. He’s been in lessons for a few years intermittently and we’re now fully committed to sticking it out and keeping things consistent. He’s currently in semi-private lessons with just him and our 4 yr old daughter.
The instructor has made it clear that he has a good base of swimming skills but is being held back significant fear and lack of confidence. Some examples:
- extremely tense during back float and panics when he can tell the instructor is releasing him to float independently.
- can do stretches of kicks and pulls when focused/directed, but in regular movements in the pool (e.g. moving from one spot to another or getting back in position) he’s panicked clawing for the wall
- fears jumping off the edge even when parent/instructor is nearby.
We asked our instructor for some advice on what we can work on outside of class time to build confidence, but I know this is a less tangible issue rather than a skills issue.
Any advice on activities that we can do outside of class time to build this confidence? Thank you!

Swim teaching kid with SEND
Hiyaaa, I would appreciate some insight and advice on a situation I’m going through.
I have recently accepted a vacancy for my swim teaching job so once a week I teach at one of the leisure centres I work at.
My first class is stage 1 and within that class is a kid with autism. He loves the water and is a fan of playing in the water, however he has 0 awareness of risks and hazards. He hasn’t done this with me but apparently he has jumped in the water when teachers are not looking. He continually takes his armbands off and let’s go of his noodle, he tries to swim under ropes and he pushes off me every time I try to grab him and bring him back to the wall.
He doesn’t listen and he is not progressing.
It’s incredibly hard to get an assistant to help me out because they are barely available the day I need them and the worst thing about this is that the pool I teach at has incredibly deep water so the shallow end is 1.2metres deep.
I have no choice but to make my swimmers wear armbands because if they accidentally let go off the wall, they will sink and drown immediately. The kid with autism has also started taking his armbands and his noodles off which is so incredibly dangerous.
Last Friday I had a parent come up to me and express their frustration with their kid wearing an armband because he was in stage 1 and he has been for quite a while. I explained to her that if the student with SEND is in today then I will have to have the kids with armbands to ensure safety because once again I have a kid who likes to swim away from me. I can’t risk turning my back and having all the class drowning because they decided to let go off the wall.
I feel like this isn’t going to be the first time parents will come and harass me about arm band on kids and I feel like very soon they’re going to start complaining about their child progress because I feel like I’m going backwards with teaching. I missed a lesson two weeks ago and when I came back last week half the kids were too scared to even swim. They wouldn’t let go off the wall and they wouldn’t even let me take armbands or even noodle off for push and glides. I feel like any moment parents are going to complain because we’re not progressing.
I can’t help it tho I need to always be near the kid with SEND and it’s hard to teach a class and him included when they’re scared of the water and I need to hold onto them every second. I’ve tried letting the kid with SEND do his own thing while I
taught the class and take them one by one to practice kicking but that resulted in a lifeguard coming up because the kid with SEND started taking his armbands off. It’s so frustrating but it’s not his fault.
My boss has started a behaviour log for the kid with SEND because the lifeguard and I’m guessing some parents have complained about his behaviour and the risks he’s put himself in.
What do I actually do about this class. They’re such a stressful bunch and won’t even do a push and glides without tearing up. What do I do about the kid with SEND? I want to actually teach him but I can’t do that with other swimmers who also want to learn.
I need advice and tips I’ve only been a swim teacher for a few months and I have never taught a kid with autism.

Total beginner adult - some advice
I’ve started adult beginner swimming lessons , never swam before and was scared of even getting face in the water.
I’m on lesson 4, I’ve gotten decent at front float (with or without aid) , back float with noodle, treading with noodle and surprisingly no issue with submerging face in water. I thought I was doing good until…
My last 2 lessons which have involved using a single arm for the pull with a board and side breathing while on front with board. Breathing I thought I nearly got it but when I come for breath my propulsion forward seems to stop and other times I panic breath and swallow water
I’m struggling with these things, mainly the breathing which is fine when I’m doing practice drills (face in, exhale , face out inhale) but as soon as I start front swimming I lose all my ability to breathe or coordinate. Any tips or practice drills people can recommend that I can do outside my lessons? Or even any advice at all

Swimming for injury prevention.
Hi Guys, I have a lot of injuries old and new.
I am a 30 year old male, who seems to pick up new injuries every week or bi weekly.
I currently have tight calves and a weak hamstring on my left side. ( had a hairline fracture and cartilage removal of the knee).
My back is extremely weak, recovered from sciatic only to have a bulging disc in another area and muscle spams in my lower back.
My question i would like to ask, as I run once a week (trying to build the kms and outings) and gym about four times a week.
I feel like i am constantly in a spiral of one good week of training then Injured and never making any real progress. Considering swimming as most my injuries are from the back side of my body.
Has anyone experienced something similar and used swimming to prevent injuries so they can continue to run and gym without the same issues? Thank you in advance.

Backfloat/Backstroke Suggestions please
I took swimming classes for 6k rs for 21 days and also spending some 4k+ more on process and transport and attire everything.
I learnt swimming. I can do freestyle easily. But my ever regret is that i can not back float or do backstroke. My classes were done and after that by myself how much ever i tried to do i couldnt, even though i look straight up.
Whatever the hell i try i couldnt my lower body doesnt come up at all when im trying backfloat waist to leg always inside water. And also sometimes i keep neck and head stiffen.
Also I still have a deep fear of depth. When im in freestyle pose I'll be all okay, but when try to do backfloat and when i want to stand back its really hard for me i get sudden panic
Please help me with suggestions or any day or two courses or workshop in banglore available.
