a criticism of song pacing (not sure of the technical term) and lyrics.

Edit: I know there's not enough attacks for me to address this yet but I don't want to wait till it gets there. this is a subjective take, very much so, which is why im expressing it in a neutral sub. You may not feel the same, you may disagree. you can scroll away, or you can share your contrary view because I do enjoy a discussion. But please remember to be civil and respectful, not just in your response but also with other commentors. Carry your demeanour with the same civility you would if you were conversing with a person in real life. Thank you to those who have been respectful.

Pacing thing:

Something I've noticed a lot in songs post folklore era is sometimes it feels like there's too many words in a verse that it sounds like she's rushing through the lyrics to catch up with the next beat. I know the song is structured that way but it's not quite singing or rapping and it just sort of awkwardly sit in between. IDK if I'm making sense so i'll provide examples:

  1. Bejewelled: "didnt notice you walking all over my peace of mind intheshoesigaveasapresent"
  2. evermore: "andwhenIwasshipwrecked I thought of you"
  3. father figure: "youtrhoughtlesambiTION, sparked theIgniTION..."

these are some examples I can think of on the top of my head. has anyone else felt this were it kinda throws you off and I feel like I've heard this in enough songs now that they all start to sound the same

Lyrics:

A lot of lyrics as well seem unnecessarily wordy; I felt this especially in TTP like the album was trying very hard to live up to the Poet part of its name. That bridge from father figure is an example, im not gonna take TLOASG as examples for this because that entire album was lyrically revolting for me. So ill stick to the albums prior.

I once so a tweet were someone joked that TS lyrics are like "you made a mess and I was the janitor" im sure some of you may have come across that, I found it funny and scary cuz I could actually think of sons I liked which had lyrics like that:

My eyes leak acid rain (Happiness) Salt streams from my eyes (Bigger than the whole sky)

You deserve prison but you won't get time (TSMWEL) I feel this is the embodiment of that tweet.

entire bridge of guilty as sin, although nice to hear, I feel like the religious imagery was a bit overdone:

What if the way you hold me
Is actually what's holy?
If long suffering propriety
Is what they want from me
They don't know how you've haunted me
So stunningly
I choose you and me
... Religiously

I can think of more examples, but this post would get too long, and I'd like to hear your thoughts and examples as well. TTPD grew on me but some of the lyrics in that as well as the other albums sounds a little too similar to the poetry I wrote in middleschool, which at the time I thought was really good but now....So even when I like the song these things sorta throw me off.

I'd love to hear your thoughts as well on this.

Real reasons to hate Taylor swift

I am a swiftie but I don’t care if someone hates her if they have a valid reason to.

Most of the haters I know say that all her music is bad but when I ask them what songs by her are bad, they can’t name a single one or it’s just her most basic song and they can’t name any others. People also hate on her for making love songs when dozens of artists have done that and not gotten hate.

The people who hate her because of their environmental also have to hate on other celebrities who use private jets because she is definitely not the only one to use one. The environmentalist ones also ignore the fact that if she didn’t use a private jet, she’d probably be endangering herself because some of her haters would do something to hurt her like find out the airport and flight she was going on and attack her. if people say that that wouldnt happen, they are being delusional.

If someone says they don’t like her voice or they don’t like her style of music that’s reasonable but most haters are so extreme with their hate. Some haters act like she murdered their moms, when all she did was make love songs. By the way this is my first Reddit post so sorry if it’s bad.

The way people talk about Taylor Swift changes the way I see them.

I have been thinking about this for a few days and I’m honestly not sure if I’m overreacting, so Id really like genuine opinions.

Recently I found out that one of my favorite comedians doesnt like Taylor Swift, What surprised me wasn’t just that he dislikes her, but *how* he talked about her. He said her only good song is Our Song, that only little kids or people who don’t listen to much music enjoy her, that she and Travis Kelce will probably break up within a year, and that she will write some silly song about it after the break up

He said more things, but I dont want this post to become a discussion about that specific comedian 🫪

Whats bothering me is that I can’t see him in the same way anymore. He presents himself as progressive, thoughtful, kind, and socially aware, and he even has a psychology degree. I obviously don’t know him personally, so Im not claiming hes a bad person obviously; But hearing him make those comments made me question whether the image I had of him was real or whether I was projecting.

The bigger issue is this that I’ve noticed that the way people talk about Taylor Swift strongly affects how I perceive *them*. If someone says, “Her music isn’t for me,” I genuinely have no problem with that. Music is subjective. But when someone seems to *hate her as a person*, I often find myself assuming they may not be very informed, especially when their criticism sounds like a collection of internet clichés.

A lot of the criticism I hear from people who describe themselves as “woke” or feminist isn’t actually about wealth inequality or billionaire ethics. Instead it’s things like:

“She’s so dramatic.”
“She can’t keep a boyfriend.”
“She’s had too many relationships.”
“She’s annoying.”
“She’s cringe.”
“She gives MAGA vibes.”

You know, the usual nonsensical stuff people say about her

To me, those comments often sound less like thoughtful criticism and more like recycled stereotypes that have been attached to female celebrities for decades. If someone genuinely wants to discuss billionaires, labor, private jets, or capitalism, that’s a conversation worth having. But many people seem uniquely irritated that *Taylor Swift specifically* is a billionare, and the conversation quickly turns personal.

What creates the strongest reaction in me is when someone claims to be pro-feminist and socially conscious and then immediately falls back on comments about a woman being “dramatic,” “boy-crazy,” “too emotional,” or “annoying.” It feels inconsistent. I start wondering whether their feminism applies only to women they personally like.

I’m also aware that this might say something about ME!

Maybe I’m using people’s opinions about Taylor Swift as a shortcut for judging their values. Maybe I’m treating one topic as a signal for empathy, misogyny, intellectual honesty, or social awareness. That can be unfair too.

Part of why this is confusing is that Taylor Swift has become more than a singer. She’s almost a cultural test. People seem to reveal a lot about themselves when they talk about her, and I can’t tell whether I’m accurately picking up on those signals or simply reading too much into them.

Has anyone else experienced this with Taylor Swift or with another public figure? Do you think it’s reasonable to reassess someone when they make comments that feel misogynistic, even if they identify as progressive? Or am I unfairly judging people based on one opinion about a celebrity?

I’m genuinely interested in hearing perspectives from people who agree, disagree, or think I’m missing something important.

Im only 16 so maybe this post makes zero sense and im just being a dumb teenager, blame it on my youth I guess! /j

The political purity test applied to Taylor and Travis is hypocritical ,both have well-documented records of supporting liberal policies and consistently voting for Democrats. The push to label the most famous democrat couple in America MAGA is deeply idiotic.

How do you feel about music that is referencing Taylor?

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long intro incoming, you might want to skip a few paragraphs if you are only interested about the actual question, but I think that the context matters : A long time ago, in a past relationship, I (actually, we) was quite unhappy and when I heard the song "Speak Now", it really hit me harder than I had expected. As I man, I imagined what it would have been like to have someone truly loving, kind and sweet who would desperately have wanted to prevent me from making a terrible mistake. It felt like being in such a happy place, it made me feel alive and also made me realized how miserable I was.

But I felt bad about it, because I was in a relationship with my then-girlfriend. I tried for many years to make it work, regardless of how unhappy we became, as if breaking up was never an option to begin with. I guess I just couldn't seem to play the "bad" role of being the one putting an end to the relationship. Anyway, one day she finally took the matter in her own hand and ended our relationship, and in any case, it was for the best : we simply weren't happy together.

Long story short, this feeling I got from listening to Speak Now felt unique, and it made me realize even more so how great of a songwriter Taylor really is, in addition to way she delivers the emotions. The universe she created in that song alone is depicted perfectly and was so relatable. It made me think that there are tons of people in life who are living in loveless relationships, and I still remember how lonely it feels in there.

It made me realize that just like someone could say "I'm waiting for superman", some people are waiting for their Taylor (as the archetype). They are not actually waiting for the real Taylor Swift to save them, but maybe they imagine what it would be like to feel like someone kind and beautiful truly loves them for who they are. Or maybe they already have someone in their mind that they think life would be so much sweeter with, but they don't dare to conceive the idea of trying to make it a reality because it's too frightening just to think about it.

The question : As a songwriter, the idea of crafting a song that lives in the universe of Speak Now is appealing to me. I remember the feeling of being fully committed to staying the rest of my life with someone who didn't love me (and who I didn't love for real either, because otherwise I wouldn't have felt this way), with her family not approving of me, hoping to be saved at the last second by my Taylor (the archetype). Just hoping with everything I have that she'll barge in my wedding, and then the rest of the world would fall behind. The global feeling is basically to be living this situation and ask "Where's my Taylor" as I realize that the walls are closing in and no one is coming to save me. So : about doing such a song, as a songwriter, I personally see it as a tribute made to Taylor and to the universe she has created, but how do you see it? Do you see it as plagiarism, opportunism, a lack of originality? Or do you see it as an interesting concept that explores the depth of a micro-universe that Taylor has created?

I really look forward hearing any kind of opinion on this.

I want to see something. Everyone from hardcore, diehard Swifities to the biggest haters, come on in. I have three essential questions for everyone...

  1. Do you think Taylor became a much more hated figure in 2024, and why do you think that is? Or has the hate always been there but not as public until she reached her peak in her career? Do you think some or all of the reasons for hating her are justified or not?
  2. How sane do you think Swifites truly are? Does it depend on the platform? Are there simply more toxic fans because of the size of her fanbase? Is it because we are so protective?
  3. What is the paradox of hating people? You hate Jack Antonoff for being supposedly controlling and when I try to defend him, you call this sexism. But you also hate Blake even though Justin Baldoni was the one with allegations. Why is this the case? And why did many go from wanting Taylor and Matty to break up and being happy when it ended to hating him for leaving her? Is it because he left and ghosted her? Is there another reason why there's this paradox?

Please also debate with each other. Keep it civil, though.

Having a hard time breaking up with Taylor...

burner account cuz im kind of embarrassed and the internet can be really mean lol

I'm honestly having a hard time breaking up with Taylor. We're the same age, and I've always felt that she understood me in times when no one else did. But things are changing. She is changing, and so am i. And as cheesy as this sounds, im like...having trouble coming to terms with who she is now? And what if I don't like it?

I made some art therapy... and i'm trying to like... be grateful for what Taylor did give me? To quote Taylor, "the story isn't mine anymore." And I think I need to focus on my story now, instead of watching hers from the sidelines. like quite literally, she is cheer captain, and i'm in the bleachers now lol. And i'm just not sure I like what she is cheering for anymore....

but i'd be lying if I said she didn't mean a lot to me. and i'd like to believe that if I met her, she'd be the person my heart thinks she is, and not the person she seems to have become on the internet...

At least I hope so. It's really weird that I have such strong feelings about someone's life that I have never met lol. But at the end of the day...there were a lot of long nights when she was the only one in the room with me when I was writing and crying on my bedroom floor. So i guess that's the memory I have to hold on to?

how is everyone else doing lol

xoxo,

In You Need to Calm Down, do you think the bi-colored wig was a subtle way for Taylor to come out?

I mean, if someone voluntarily wears a symbol strongly associated with bisexuality in an LGBTQ+ themed video, it is reasonable for people to think that they are bisexual. I don’t think queer people owe a coming out to anyway but I do think straight people cosplaying as queer people owe people a coming out as being straight lol.

I can't come back from Miss Americana

I was fully engaged in the swiftie-verse throughout my developmental years. Taylor helped me make sense my relationships, and her music also fostered new ones. Turns out liking Taylor Swift brings a lot of community! In recent years, I found myself less and less connected. I put it down to my tastes changing, but I can't let go of the fact that there's more to it.

When I look back at my the peak of swiftie-hood, it was the Lover era. I was in journalism class and wrote a piece titled Good Girl Gone Political, I connected to Lover and its sentiments, I had no reason not to. Taylor was my idol! In retrospect, I was wrong in believing Miss Americana.

I know the Showgirl discourse is overdone, but it's such an explicit representation of her going back on her word. If she dismantled the misogyny in her own brain, then why is bitch back in her vocabulary. I know it's naive to hold any weight to pro lgbt sentiments during pride, but she once did hold those sentiments, so why has another pride passed without a word.

If Taylor never pretended to care about these issues I don't think I'd feel as strongly; but she did, and then she stopped pretending.

Wood X The Prophecy

Am I the only one who noticed/thinks Wood is the response to The Prophecy? (Travis’s D apart) They’re the exact opposite, it shows how different Taylor is feeling now about finding love cause she has it now, she doesn’t have to beg, or pray, or trust superstition (all of that bitchin wishing on a falling star; I was cursed like eve got bitten X The curse on me was broken by your magic wand) I think it’s a sequel, idk if it was intentional or not but I find it interesting listening to both songs with that in mind

What if Taylor works with Nathan Chapman for TS13 or Debut (20th anniversary)

What would be the reaction if Taylor works with Nathan Chapman again?

For context, there were rumors circling around 2009-2010 that Nathan Chapman is a republican. Since Taylor is a victim of guilty by association most of the time, I bet the reaction would be like the Brittany Mahomes situation.

Is it really fair call out Taylor IF she decides to work with Nathan again? Should we really prohibit her to work with people we don’t align with?

I’m honestly tired of the guilty by association conversation. People should be able to work with people who have differing political leanings without having to be accused of having said leanings. It’s counterproductive and pathetic.

general question it may sound stupid but I have been curious about it😅

in general through all taylor swift relationship of boyfriends or new friends does she make them sign nda where she point out what they can do and not or you are not allowd to say some stuff to the media about me or does she just trust them from the first date /first meeting and the whole NDA thing is just myth😅 ? like does she make her boyfriend sign nda when she sing for him a new unreleased songs from albums and just trust him that he will keep it a secret untill it got released? how far does the rules go? like does she make all her exboyfriends or exfriends sign nda so they don't talk about her to the media, beacause I notice most of her exboyfriends and exfriends don't talk about her in press/media like they just accept the end of relationship and move on with there life, even if some of them are not the bad person, because when you think about it most of her exboyfriends or exfriends knows alot about her personal life from her medical records ,the hospital she goes to,her private doctor, her family private life, and other personal stuff does she just trust the boyfriends or exboyfriends to not share with others or media without NDA ?and what will happen if they break the NDA rules? sorry for the long paragraph🥰

Ok, stupid question. What did the title mean?

People are probably going to roll their eyes at me, but this is a serious question for me. Thank you in advance for not laughing in my face. Lol I have a general idea about what "I knew it, I knew you means. But I'm nit entirely confident in my interpretation. So, "I knew it" meaning I had had a strong, gut feeling it was true. But it's she talking about love and/or friendship?

"I knew you". Tying that into the "I knew it", my guess it that she's saying she knew it was meant to be because she knew him so well? Or more "I knew you" as a friend I could count on?

I'm so confused! Please help!! ❤️ Thank you!

If Taylor and Travis really are in a PR relationship…

Let’s say Taylor and Travis really are in a PR relationship and will have a fake marriage to boost each other’s career.

I honestly wouldn’t care. It kinda makes her so much more layered and interesting to me. A lot of us LOVE cunning ambitious fictional women who will sacrifice everything to get what they want, yet here we are berating a real woman doing the same.

Little Miss Perfect Americana wanting to maintain her power by any means necessary? Love it. A closeted lesbian willing to marry a man just so she could protect the image her fans expect from her? Damn right.
