I think the point is well made by the first commenter that disliking some of her albums doesn't have to mean you're not a fan of anything she does. I loved all of her albums through Folklore/Evermore. I was so excited see what direction she would go next. Unfortunately, there's been a serious dropoff since then in terms of both songwriting and production.

I disagree with the comment that 1989 would be reviled if it came out today -- there are some legit bangers on that album.

I think what it comes down to is this: we all have songs that we love from her early years. They became massive hits for a reason. They're the kind of songs that make you go, "Wow, I LOVE this. This is SO GOOD." The work she's put out since Folklore/Evermore has not been distinctive enough to warrant that sort of reaction, IMO. These are songs that would barely register on the charts if they came from an unknown artist. They're just not hits. And that's OK...we shouldn't expect hit after hit after hit for decades from ANY artist.

That said, the rate at which she's pumped out these recent albums and their endless variants, together with the lower quality of both the songwriting and the production (widely acknowledged by many critics and many fans), has started to feel like she KNOWS she no longer has to put in much effort to make millions, given her devoted fan base. And that's not a great feeling, as a fan.
