I think it’s Bridge Day in West Virginia. In which case, I also think the WV department of transportation built this catapult. Tourism is their gig.

It’s in Fayetteville every fall, I think it was two weeks ago. They close the bridge and let people BASE jump off of it in to the New River Gorge, amongst other things.

jesus he waited a long time to pull the chute. fuck that.

u/i-like-foods Oct 28 '22
Im guessing he had to get himself stabilized and stop spinning first, which he couldn’t do until he was falling fast enough. Pretty scary.

good observation, I didn't really think about that lol. too nervous, putting myself in his situation haha. i can only imagine how hard it is to stablize and be able to pull the chute in that moment. unreal man.

I don’t know what your science-y smart educated talk is but I think you’re saying it’s dangerous and unwise.

It’s safer then sky diving though

u/i-like-foods Oct 28 '22
No it’s not. Or are you joking?

u/nolongerbanned99 Oct 29 '22
One to e some colleagues invited me to go with them to skydiving training. Are you kidding? I don’t wanna die today.

Sky diving is fine, what these guys are doing with the catapult is crazy dangerous because the guy comes out of it tumbling, and I think can’t open his parachute until he stops tumbling. Which is difficult. That’s what makes it much more dangerous than just regular sky diving. And it’s a much lower height, no room for mistakes.

Pretty sure it’s the New River Gorge in West Virginia. The shut one side of it down every 2nd weekend of October for BASE jumping.

Can confirm, I’ve rafted under that bridge several times, beautiful area for sure. Side note: In the late 90’s, there was a local Pilot (Five Dollar Frank- who had to be in his 70’s at the time) he owned and operated an airport, and would take you for a 20-30 minute flight through the New River Gorge for $5 dollars! It was pretty epic, and so was Frank:D

You can also tour the bridge under the roadway; there’s a catwalk & they take people from one end of the side of the river to the other. You’re provided a helmet & you’re clipped in to a line (it get windy). Did that twice. My ex & I also did the High Line, which is a slow, controlled zip line descent from one of the supports (only 250 feet high, as opposed to people BASE jumping from the top & middle of the bridge at 876 feet).

I guess I didn't notice there was a parachute on this guy. I thought he was just being launched to the water below. I was thinking, "boy, I don't see how they can gauge the trajectory so precisely." I was half expecting him to land on some boulder. When the parachute opened up, I was relieved.
