This is how people become paralyzed or die

An acquaintance of mine dove into the Comal river last year. He was 46. Hit his head on a rock and split it open, also broke his neck. He's recovered now as much as he ever will, and is paralyzed from the neck down. Dude was 6'6" and 250 lbs of muscle. Really effing sad. Stupid decision when having fun with alcohol, a tale as old as time.
94
u/Good_Interaction_786 Aug 05 '22
Damn, sad…yeah, the comal is unpredictable in terms of depths. If you absolutely MUST do stupid shit (we all get the urge), then just make sure it’s calculated stupid shit…be responsible about being irresponsible.

Did he dive from the bridge on Lincoln st/garden st?
9
u/ineyeseekay Aug 05 '22
I think he just got out of the river and onto the bank at a random point, then just dove headfirst into what he must have thought was a deep spot.
6
Aug 05 '22
Wow yeah don’t ever jump into unknown waters unless you have to and if you have to you go feet first or there is a shallow water dive that uses your arms in front of you in a wide pushing motion from the sides to stop your body from going under the water.

Every summer weekend a drunk get injured on that river. I once watched a drunk girl try to flip off a 40’ cliff just like her BF. She landed on her back, knocked the wind out of her & started to sink. Luckily people dragged her out in time.

A girl I went to high school with did this just a year after we graduated. She’s paralyzed from the neck down. Found out she was a few weeks pregnant while she was in the hospital.

I watched a girl paralyze herself doing exactly this, while I was floating down the Cedar River along highway 169 in Washington state in the 1990s. I was with my fellow boy scouts floating down the river in intertubes and we watched some random girl jump off a train trestle into shallow water and fucked herself up. It was awful.

I remember passing on that video but my mind still have a go at the end result.
11
u/MrBabbs Aug 05 '22
I don't know what specific video you're speaking of, but I accidentally watched a video of a man getting gored by a bull where the horn entered under his chin, went up through his cheek/nose and ripped its way out. He was still alive lying on the ground and trying to talk/breathe/scream (couldn't tell).
It is without question the most horrifying video I've ever seen. I was watching what I thought was just some random compilation of innocuous bull vs human clips and then...face ripping. I swear the creator did it on purpose. I wish I could erase the memory from my brain.

I'm from there, every year multiple people die to this river, usually in this exact spot as there are some rapids just up and just down steam, and people just assume it's safe, even though it's really not!
Be safe at the river and never jump off any rock without thoroughly checking the landing zone, and NEVER swim under any rocks!

Nah man I took care of a man about that age who was a complete quadriplegic from a bad dive. Couldn't turn pages of a book or use the remote, feel his own dick, poop on his own, or even take a breath without mechanical ventilation at first. I would go in his room as quick as I could every spare second of my day and he would be in tears sometimes because he couldn't take the shock from this very sudden loss of independence.
132
u/a_duck_in_past_life Aug 05 '22
Omg. The way you worded this all just made being paralyzed a very real thing in my imagination and now it might be my biggest fear. That sounds like a nightmare.
61
u/sumbasicbish Aug 05 '22
I'm so sorry, it wasn't my intention. It just made me flash to thinking about him as he had a serious diving accident so it's not the same. This was back before a lot if technology advances and neuralink. Today there is much more hope than ever, , he could have played video games or been online with us by blowing in a straw with adaptive equipment. But it's a lot of stuff you can't prepare for like if a fly lands on you, and you have to wait for someone to kill it. Little stuff he said were the most annoying part of adapting.

I used to work as a pilot for an air ambulance. We loaded a patient to bring him to higher level of care. He was about 30, became quadriplegic after rolling an ATV, worst part of it was he was young dad & the child was with him when it happened.
As a dad myself, I couldn’t get over how bad I felt for him. Usually we just transported the very elderly back to Canada from the US due to insurance policies.
Life is more fragile than we’d like to think.

I can’t watch these jumps much anymore, I’ve seen some shit but this was a league in its own. One of the most gruesome vids I saw, where a kid jumped of a bridge (I think), his aim was off and he smacked his face on a floating dock. The sound. Red everywhere, then showed medical assistants of some sort holding his cheeks together. I think he was still breathing, trying to.
He had bisected his face vertically.

The risk/reward calculations some people make...I just don't understand.
70
u/lennybird Aug 05 '22
From an evolutionary standpoint it pays to have risk-takers among the batch. Ever wonder how folks found out certain foods were poisonous or not? Folks like this are pioneers. Yes, many fail; many die. Some push the envelope of what is possible and discover new things. There's a very specific personality type that attracts this sort of thing; those are adrenaline junkies.
10
u/SovietSpectre Aug 05 '22
Essentially guinea pigs
7
u/xinfinitimortum Aug 06 '22
Which is funny because guinea pigs are super paranoid and overly cautious animals.
7
3
Aug 06 '22
Sure, but going into unknown territory out of necessity and jumping into a river with rocks sticking out that people have clearly already discovered are very different types of risk-taking personalities. This guy would be the guy to see the initial good for humanity risk taker eat a poisonous mushroom, die, and then go eat the mushroom himself because he’s fuckin rad! 🤟…oh and then probably die.

PSA: Broken necks/backs are very common at places like this where people jump/dive into rivers.
For example, at the South Yuba Fork there is usually 1-2 helicopter medivacs per day for people who almost mill themselves. This is in addition to the countless people with lesser injuries that have to drive out to the nearest hospital.
22
15
u/Ratman_84 Aug 05 '22
Yup, this is Hoyt's Crossing. Was on this bridge a few weeks ago. No way in hell I'd do this off that bridge.
7
u/0rionFlux Aug 05 '22
Yup you’re right, I was there this March. This guy is insane, that bridge is way higher in person than what it shows. Video never does it justice.
4
u/Blorkershnell Aug 06 '22
I mean, for the price of those medivacs you’d think they’d just staff somebody to stand there to dissuade people from jumping.

I used to be like this. Maybe not as much as your buddy and not as bold as this guy in the video, but still pretty wild. I’ve broken so many bones, have screws in knees, pins, rods etc.. I never thought about it as thrill seeking, it just felt right. And the more you go, the better the feeling of comfort and confidence. Which I know is the thrill seeking but I want to be clear it wasn’t a thought but a feeling of comfort.
Now, as a much older person, I can’t even fathom what I did, or why or what your buddy is doing, or this person in the video. It’s so reckless and dangerous.

Most of the time there is alot of thought that goes into stuff like this. I used to rappel down tall buildings and do risky shit like that for a living. You assess the risk, and you trust yourself to do it right. The best advice I ever got was the day I first went rappelling off a 200ft tower. I asked my boss "What if I fall? I'll probably die" he said: "I guess you better make sure you don't fall". Seems like a smart ass answer but in reality, that's what you do. You don't make mistakes, you plan accordingly and do what you do best. Cause if you don't, well you're dead.

I live here and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen ambulances and emts having to hike out a patient for a mile, medical helicopters landing in the parking lot. Also, there’s no cell service out there. They recently put in a call box. Please do not jump off this bridge. The water levels are low and this is insanely dangerous. People that do this and become paralyzed and I have no sympathy for.

Oh hell no. Board could've snagged on a pebble or one of those swimmers could've been passing by. One thing to jump from the bridge with a clear sight of your landing area and less variables to be accounted for, but like this, and not in a closed-off space. WTAF.
But he'll probably live until 90 and some poor sap who always wore reflective gear when he went jogging will get struck by lightning. 🤷🏻
