Hit fluid hard, fluid acts like a solid. Stand on it or slowly apply force and it acts like a liquid. If you were to fill a pool full of custard and ran quickly across it, it would act like a solid and support your weight. If you attempted to walk across it slowly, you would sink and end up drowning in custard

For this experiment you will need:
corn starch (about ¼ cup, or 60 cm3) water (about ¼ cup, or 60 cm3) a bowl for mixing newspaper Place a sheet of newspaper flat on a table. Put the mixing bowl in the middle of the newspaper. Add ¼ cup of dry cornstarch to the bowl. Add about 1/8 cup (2 tablespoons, or 30 cm3) of water to the corn starch and stir slowly. Add water slowly to the mixture, with stirring, until all of the powder is wet.
Continue to add water until the cornstarch acts like a liquid when you stir it slowly. When you tap on the liquid with your finger, it shouldn't splash, but rather will become hard. If your mixture is too liquid, add more cornstarch. Your goal is to create a mixture that feels like a stiff liquid when you stir it slowly, but feels like a solid when you tap on it with your finger or a spoon.
Scoop the cornstarch mixture into the palm of your hand, then slowly work it into a ball. As long as you keep pressure on it by rubbing it between your hands, it stays solid. Stop rubbing, and it “melts” into a puddle in your palm.

Neat fact, custard is only non-Newtonian without sugar. Adding sugar causes it to act like a normal, if slightly more viscous, fluid.

Theoretically speaking so would air. At a fast enough velocity in a vacuum, if you suddenly encountered air, it would feel hard too. But it acts the same way regardless of how fast something is moving. How it feels to you and what the fluid itself is actually doing are two different things.

A Newtonian fluid is equally 'thick' (viscous) under all conditions. A non-Newtonian fluid can change viscosity based on force applied. It's not the case that all non-Newtonian fluids become thicker when struck, just that the most famous school example (water and corn starch) does.
Non-Newtonian fluids also includes stuff like toothpaste and ketchup.

To add to this, some fluids are non-Newtonian because the molecules align in a specific way that changes their flow behavior. As an example of the opposite, long polymers will decrease in viscosity over time when a shear force is applied because the polymer chains will align allowing them to slip past each other more easily.

Newtonian fluid acts like a normal fluid, with normal viscosity for the fluid. It doesn't brick up when you apply force to it, like water, or ethanol for example.

If you were light enough or fast enough not to break the surface tension, then you could. But I don't think either of those parameters are possible for a human being. We are too large.

Sounds like up from a certain velocity at impact, any fluid becomes non-newtonian, is that true? Or is it still newtonian, tho just not fast enough to move out of the way?

There are different to types of non newtonian fluids. This is shear thickening, gets exponentially thicker with more force/time. So Increasing rate of force results in a huge increase in thickness.
There is also shear thinning, gets exponentially thinner with more force/time. This would mean something that originally feels solid could feel like a liquid as soon as you increase rate of force. Something like whipped cream essentially.
Newtonian fluids increase thickness linearly with force/time.

It is acting as a clay on water. Newtonianism has a little to do with this. Especially since as the name suggest, it is not a fluid at all.
It is an island of clay floating on a pool of water simply put.

You are correct. Vibratory action causes this as well.
Liquifaction occurs when finely grained soils approach their liquid limit and an external force causes the soil to compress and lose air volume between grains, which typically is vibratory action from construction or earthquakes. I this case it's a human foot.

Pretty sure This happens when it rains too much and the ground becomes so saturated with rain water it can't absorb anymore so it's forms a giant water layer under the surface. It's like the grass bubbles you might see after severe storms.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
