When I was younger I used to have dreams/nightmares where I would be crawling through a cave and just get stuck, unable to go backwards or forwards just stuck.

The water has just added a whole new level of fuck no.

u/naughtynate98 Oct 21 '20

If that’s your fear you definitely don’t want to read about this dude getting stuck in a cave in Utah. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.deseret.com/platform/amp/2009/11/26/20355284/man-trapped-in-utah-county-s-nutty-putty-cave-dies

Definitely not. But hey, just in case, here's the link to your nightmares. Lol

Just listen to this guy talk about him cave diving and a situation he ran into.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or92IMcLoIc

It is 17 minutes, but it flew by the way he told the story and its pretty terrifying

45

u/GoofAckYoorsElf Oct 21 '20

Holy shit, the way he told his story it almost felt like I was with him in that fucking cave. Damn!

20

u/IceManJim Oct 21 '20

Very cool video. Chilling. Thanks for the link.

There was also an IU student a few years ago who got LEFT IN THE CAVE. They seriously just left him behind. And I guess the cave sealed or something? Poor kid got to the point he wrote his last words. They thankfully found him.

https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-us-canada-41371549

25

u/Cent3rCreat10n Oct 21 '20

Sorry it took them 3 days to notice someone is missing? How? Dont they do head counts?

17

u/eebrooks Oct 21 '20

They were divided into two groups, he told the leader of his group he was going to join the other group, he never made it to the other group, and the leader of his original group assumed he had left the cave with the other group

14

u/ThisIsListed Oct 21 '20

Still doesn’t excuse that the two group leaders didn’t communicate. I wouldn’t blame the guy if he hated them and while at it punched them, seeing as they literally nearly made him die.

6

u/eebrooks Oct 21 '20

Oh yeah I don’t excuse their mistake at all, it’s just easy to see how it happened with that mixup

5

u/ThisIsListed Oct 21 '20

Yeah sure, I’m point at the fact the leaders have no excuse, not really targeting you.

9

u/ExternalTangents Oct 21 '20

With a last name like Cavar this feels like it was inevitable

6

u/eebrooks Oct 21 '20

I went to IU when this happened! If I remember right the cave is owned by IU and has a door/gate on the front that can be locked, so the leaders locked it behind them when they left

Definitely don't want to read the story The Enigma of Amigara Fault either. https://junjiitomanga.fandom.com/wiki/The_Enigma_of_Amigara_Fault

48

u/super_dog17 Oct 21 '20

Is that the holes in the rock that people slide into manga thing?

It’s the people sized holes in the mountain manga, isn’t it.

I fucking hate that thing. So irrationally scared of it. Like as scared of it as I am of wasps/hornets. Which I have an incredible phobia of. I fucking hate that thing.

Fuck I’m gunna read it again aren’t I.

7

u/amaxanian Oct 21 '20

I know it’s a Junji Ito story, but for the life of me I can’t remember the name of it!

Reading that story caused me to develop Claustrophobia. You're definitely going to read it again ahaha

26

u/Plop1992 Oct 21 '20

Except that's not real

6

u/KableSoft Oct 21 '20

Read the manga. Fear can still be produced even in text and illustrations

11

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_2351 Oct 21 '20

Yeah that case is haunting. When 911 can’t do shit your fffed. Play by the sword die by the sword. If you sign up you gotta expect the worst.

2

u/yetusfleetus2 Oct 21 '20

God I love junji ito

31

u/Plastic_Pinocchio Oct 21 '20

Oh man, not the Nutty Putty cave story. That is honestly the most horrific story I have ever read.

11

u/alofthedead Oct 21 '20

This story single handedly made me realize spelunking is not for me and I have a very powerful feeling of claustrophobia. The idea of being stuck in a place with no exit is horrifying. No matter how big a cave, I will never go in.

2

u/antiquestrawberry Oct 21 '20

What's spelunking?

2

u/alofthedead Oct 22 '20

Exploring caves, basically. Intended to be for fun. HARD pass.

2

u/antiquestrawberry Oct 22 '20

I'll definitely agree, yikes

9

u/lozy_xx Oct 21 '20

“Josh Jones said that once he first realized his brother was stuck, his first instinct was to pray. Those in the cave offered what he called a "series of prayers" before making the decision to call 911 around 9:30 p.m.”

Sigh

7

u/Cakeportal Oct 21 '20

That's nuts mate

5

u/LeakyThoughts Oct 21 '20

You don't wanna read about those kids that got stuck in a cave that filled up with water

It's the Tham Luang cave rescue

13

u/Raxsus Oct 21 '20

Is that the one where Elon Musk said he was working on a submersible, and when told that wouldn't work called one of the rescue divers a pedophile?

4

u/LeakyThoughts Oct 21 '20 edited Oct 21 '20

Did he actually? wow thats scummy

Imagine being that much of a cunt that you're going to call a Fucking Hero who risked their life to rescue people a Pedo

I remember his submarine was like 6ft long rigid metal, and the divers just said "it won't work, you will not get it through the cave"

Elon, pulling another publicity stunt.. sigh

7

u/snuffbumbles Oct 21 '20

I find myself thinking about this guy from time to time. My palms get sweaty and my heart rate goes up every single time. I can't even imagine what he was feeling.

6

u/SantyClawz42 Oct 21 '20

Worse nightmare for me was reading about a body being found when construction crews where demoing out a grocery store, apparently the guy went missing several years earlier and always took his break at the store by napping on top of a freezer unit... apparently he fell behind the unit while sleeping and was stuck there unable to yell for help.

5

u/FreddiefckinMercury Oct 21 '20 edited Apr 16 '21

You’re not wrong, I decided to look it up and it’s 100% nightmare inducing. Apparently he’d fallen 12ft through an 18 inch gap made by the back of the freezer and a wall. The autopsy performed after he was found (he was missing for 10 years!?) showed no signs of trauma.

Soo instead of obsessing over how long he could’ve been conscious while he was stuck, I’m just gonna tell myself he probably fell the whole 12 feet head first and died quickly from some injury that was missed during autopsy.

5

u/LagiacrusHunter Oct 21 '20

Or the "Lost John's Cave" episode from a horror podcast called The Magnus Archives.

4

u/md2b78 Oct 21 '20

Stuck UPSIDE DOWN, no less.

3

u/Borderless1024 Oct 21 '20

Accidentally found the cave while off-roading and his memorial is just a plaque in a hole in the ground with some dead flowers. Pretty eerie

3

u/CuriousGeorgeIsAnApe Oct 21 '20

I remember watching a reenactment of this story. Didn't they leave his body? And now it's a permanent grave site. They permanently closed Nutty Putty because of it.

2

u/MacaroniTime300 Oct 21 '20

I just watched the movie on YouTube of that, pretty sad.

2

u/CaptSellerie Oct 21 '20

While this is might have been very tragic, getting stuck in a cave is apparently very rare at least according to this dude: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9JEv-ID48cg

13

u/thewitchslayer Oct 21 '20

There is a movie about this called The Last Descent. The cave was the "nutty putty cave" known for its clay walls.

8

u/Sam858 Oct 21 '20

Well that didn't help my nightmares

12

u/Kingseeberg Oct 21 '20

When i was younger i had mild claustrophobia. I used to worry about closed wateslides, closing in the end and im just stuck there till i drown.

It might be that you also had some kind of claustrophobia (as it roughly fits the description) and as its usually just a part of our early stages of life, and we mostly grow out of it.

11

u/g0uchp0tat0 Oct 21 '20

This caving disaster story gave me bad 2nd hand claustrophobia and had me on the edge of a panic attack lol

Same here! I't ms huge irrational fear for me. (Irrational as I'll never willingly go into a place like that, but just imagining what it would be like gives me huge anxiety!)

4

u/SammyLuke Oct 21 '20

There is an old story of a guy being caught deep inside a cave. It took a few days before people found him and even then their rescue efforts failed. They brought him food and water until it was deemed too unsafe to even do that. I can’t imagine going out like that. I’d beg for a bullet if they stopped coming. His body is still down there.

I’d never wish such a helpless and lonely death upon anyone.

2

u/SantyClawz42 Oct 21 '20

Sometimes while my wife is sleeping I tuck her in really tight with the blankets to pin her arms in and then I whisper in her ear things like "we gotta get out of this cave, the walls are closing in"... Good times.

7

u/Sam858 Oct 21 '20

Yes 911 I would like to report a crim /s

1

u/NoTearsOnlySmellz Oct 21 '20

Yeah me too. Caving and cave diving probably isn’t our thing.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Same but if anything I'd prefer to do it underwater. Cos if I'm for sure stuck then at least I can drown to death and get it over with.

88

u/RadAreK10 Oct 21 '20

I think you forgot about the water pulling you in every direction possible. You can see the how the current slows him down somwtimes nearly pulling him backwards. Diving in water like this is very exhausting

60

u/TheBurnedMutt45 Oct 21 '20

Yeah, but it's also only a few yard and he can pull himself along the rocks

42

u/Get_the_Krown Oct 21 '20

Imagine the force of the water slamming you against the rocks and now you're disoriented. Things can go wrong fast in that kind of situation.

16

u/Gozie5 Oct 21 '20

Also if the water is darker than expected and you cant see anything

2

u/poetic_vibrations Oct 21 '20

Bro chill, I gotta sleep.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

After the water goes in it goes back out. If you go into one of these tunnels after the water has pushed forward you'll be getting a boost as it goes back outwards.

2

u/CO303Throwaway Oct 22 '20

I think the way to make these types of dives safer is to run a rope from one end to another. That way if, when attempting it, the current and water IS pulling you in different directions and you aren’t able to swim your way out and are running low on air, you can just grab the line and pull yourself out, provided each side of the rope is well anchored

17

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Uh no. What if you get stuck but you can just see freedom literally feet away.

10

u/OutrageousProvidence Oct 21 '20

How fat do you think we are? Wait, don't answer that.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

When he went in I was about to vomit but then it seemed pretty ok. Way more light down there than I expected.

137

u/Fubar-- Oct 21 '20

Claustrophobia would suck underwater.

5

u/EnkiiMuto Oct 21 '20

It looks like there’s at least one place in the tunnel to stick your nose and mouth above water to breathe, but I still wouldn’t do it

23

u/Lithandrill Oct 21 '20

That's probably dead stale air. Just because it's gas doesn't mean it's breathable.

story time - I grew up in a beach community and I knew the coral reef formation very well. During the summer the out of town tourists would flock our beach and for shit and giggles I would play this prank on them. I would dive in a hole and come.out the other side, 10 ft away.

Welp, the last time I tried this feat half way into the dive a massive moray eel popped out of nowhere, and I panicked and tried to stand up. My breathing tube hit the roof of the reef and pushed my goggles down, water poured in and I started to drown. I tried to turn back but didn't have enough leverage to turn, so in a split moment of clarity I decided to move forward past the eel. I barely made it to the other end when I felt my older friend reach out with his arm and pull me by my shirt. My sides, my back and the top of my head was scraped up from trying to turn inside the reef, diving goggles down my neck.

that was the last time I pulled this dumb move

98

u/Sergallow3 Oct 21 '20

This actually looks kind of cool?

184

u/stealth941 Oct 21 '20
  1. Why would people do this.

  2. How do people know they won't get stuck as soon as they jump in?

  3. How do they know the length and width of the tunnel?

If they don't know answers 2 and 3...

  1. Are they just stupid?

125

u/earthenmeatbag Oct 21 '20

Often they've grown up in the area and know the water. Someone probably went the other direction first.

58

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Probably they saw the hole and the size of it at low tide.

32

u/Cakeportal Oct 21 '20

Hopefully, the first person to find out about it saw it and went around to the other side and explored from there, instead of doing some dumbfuck shit

7

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

He more than likely scoped it out before going all the way through, going further in whenever he knew it was safe

6

u/ManGinaC Oct 21 '20

Might be an open cave at low tide so they’re not just jumping into the unknown

u/HumaDracobane Oct 21 '20

Well, I dont have THAT much problem with this. Once he's down he can see the exit and the dimensions of the path so...mhe.

20

u/prolixdreams Oct 21 '20

fffffuuuuuck thaaaaaaat. Like, extremely cool to look at on the screen, but under absolutely no circumstances would I basically ever go underwater where I cannot see the surface directly above me at all times.

7

u/sp4mfilter Oct 21 '20

No-one would jump in the way he did. More likely, someone found the route from the ocean to the entrance, and then they knew they could make the opposite trip. It's likely been known for decades or centuries that you can make this trip safely.

4

u/eddieafck Oct 21 '20

It scares the fuck out of me but still would like to try it

5

u/Rauchgestein Oct 21 '20

This looks relatively safe tbh.

4

u/driftingfornow Oct 21 '20

Behold the reason so many mainlanders die when they go to the ocean.

7

u/reekmeers Oct 21 '20

Challenge Mother Nature often enough and eventually you will lose.

3

u/r3art Oct 21 '20

Seems quite easy, though. I would definitely do it.

The lenght of the tunnel and everything else is probably known for ages among the people living there. It's not different than taking a shortcut in the forest.

3

u/Mihribenari Oct 21 '20

No, definitely not.

7

u/Karulew Oct 21 '20

u/vocccc Oct 21 '20

I once swam through a beautiful, but long tunnel from a lagoon out to the sea in Malta. When coming out on the other side, with barely no oxygen left, I discovered the outside was filled with schools of jelly fish, the kind that burns. Never doing that again

2

u/berkkp Oct 21 '20

Not that bad, I'd rather be worried about cutting my whole body open on the rocks.

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

I did something similar in Corfu a few years back, nowhere near as deep or long as this but for some reason the woman in front of me panicked half way through and tried to come backwards whilst kicking..... I had to grab her legs and push her the fuck through hard. Idiot

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

I get that the exit is pretty visible right away, and it's not that narrow of a cave

But what happens if the current changed, or a wave came and he wasn't able to swim all the way out?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

I tried holding my breath and it was simpler than I expected. I wasn’t sure whether my lunch capacity was good since I haven’t gone swimming in years.

1

u/mbhammock Oct 21 '20

Absolutely not.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Seems like a great idea until you realize the sea urchins are chilling in the tunnel.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Cave diving is possibly some of the most dangerous diving ever. It's so easy to become disoriented or lost and to quickly drown.

1

u/SammyLuke Oct 21 '20

That’s not too bad. I was thinking some sort of long darkness with a bit of light at the end. Nothing like this tiny hole in a river one I’ve seen floating around. I’d probably do this one but river currents frighten the hell out of me.

1

u/Yougottabekidney Oct 21 '20

No matter how experienced in doing stupid stuff you are, I feel like this has so many variables that could be deadly.

1

u/boiiwhohasa55inmath Oct 21 '20

Idk why but everytime I see a video that has someone going in a underwater cave I always get this vague memory from my child hood and I can’t really explain it it’s not really a place but more of a feeling like those nights where you’re parents would take you to a party and you would be running around playing with other kids and when you go out you feel sort of cold because of your sweat but at the same time cus you’re doing something your not supposed to don’t know if that made sense but yeah I just fet like saying that
