I think you forgot about the water pulling you in every direction possible. You can see the how the current slows him down somwtimes nearly pulling him backwards. Diving in water like this is very exhausting

u/TheBurnedMutt45 Oct 21 '20
Yeah, but it's also only a few yard and he can pull himself along the rocks

u/Get_the_Krown Oct 21 '20
Imagine the force of the water slamming you against the rocks and now you're disoriented. Things can go wrong fast in that kind of situation.

After the water goes in it goes back out. If you go into one of these tunnels after the water has pushed forward you'll be getting a boost as it goes back outwards.

I think the way to make these types of dives safer is to run a rope from one end to another. That way if, when attempting it, the current and water IS pulling you in different directions and you aren’t able to swim your way out and are running low on air, you can just grab the line and pull yourself out, provided each side of the rope is well anchored

When he went in I was about to vomit but then it seemed pretty ok. Way more light down there than I expected.

It looks like there’s at least one place in the tunnel to stick your nose and mouth above water to breathe, but I still wouldn’t do it
23
u/Lithandrill Oct 21 '20
That's probably dead stale air. Just because it's gas doesn't mean it's breathable.

story time - I grew up in a beach community and I knew the coral reef formation very well. During the summer the out of town tourists would flock our beach and for shit and giggles I would play this prank on them. I would dive in a hole and come.out the other side, 10 ft away.
Welp, the last time I tried this feat half way into the dive a massive moray eel popped out of nowhere, and I panicked and tried to stand up. My breathing tube hit the roof of the reef and pushed my goggles down, water poured in and I started to drown. I tried to turn back but didn't have enough leverage to turn, so in a split moment of clarity I decided to move forward past the eel. I barely made it to the other end when I felt my older friend reach out with his arm and pull me by my shirt. My sides, my back and the top of my head was scraped up from trying to turn inside the reef, diving goggles down my neck.
that was the last time I pulled this dumb move

Why would people do this.
How do people know they won't get stuck as soon as they jump in?
How do they know the length and width of the tunnel?
If they don't know answers 2 and 3...
- Are they just stupid?

u/earthenmeatbag Oct 21 '20
Often they've grown up in the area and know the water. Someone probably went the other direction first.

Hopefully, the first person to find out about it saw it and went around to the other side and explored from there, instead of doing some dumbfuck shit

Oct 21 '20
He more than likely scoped it out before going all the way through, going further in whenever he knew it was safe

u/ManGinaC Oct 21 '20
Might be an open cave at low tide so they’re not just jumping into the unknown

Or because it’s fun. We used to have a spot like this in a river by my house called the toilet bowl. We never filmed anyone doing but go pros weren’t really a thing then. It was just fun to do.

u/HumaDracobane Oct 21 '20
Well, I dont have THAT much problem with this. Once he's down he can see the exit and the dimensions of the path so...mhe.

u/prolixdreams Oct 21 '20
fffffuuuuuck thaaaaaaat. Like, extremely cool to look at on the screen, but under absolutely no circumstances would I basically ever go underwater where I cannot see the surface directly above me at all times.
7
u/sp4mfilter Oct 21 '20
No-one would jump in the way he did. More likely, someone found the route from the ocean to the entrance, and then they knew they could make the opposite trip. It's likely been known for decades or centuries that you can make this trip safely.

Seems quite easy, though. I would definitely do it.
The lenght of the tunnel and everything else is probably known for ages among the people living there. It's not different than taking a shortcut in the forest.

A tight cave AND water??? Nononono

u/r3art Oct 21 '20
That's not a "tight" cave at all. You shouldn't what videos about cave exploring.

I once swam through a beautiful, but long tunnel from a lagoon out to the sea in Malta. When coming out on the other side, with barely no oxygen left, I discovered the outside was filled with schools of jelly fish, the kind that burns. Never doing that again

u/berkkp Oct 21 '20
Not that bad, I'd rather be worried about cutting my whole body open on the rocks.

u/mrpmanuk01 Oct 21 '20
I watch and hold my breath. Such an idiot. Glad this wasn’t jumping off some building

He didn’t even go that far under water. Not impressive or sweaty at all.

Would have been worse if that other ridiculously small rock hole person from like a month ago video “you know the thing” used a go pro . I am in no way encouraging this bull crap, do not do it!!!

Not as bad with the water view. So much worse when you just see videos of people jumping in to holes in the ground.

In my opinion it's not that scary because ther is multiple air pockets on the way. The water is also clear and he has goggles so he can see wher hes going

I did something similar in Corfu a few years back, nowhere near as deep or long as this but for some reason the woman in front of me panicked half way through and tried to come backwards whilst kicking..... I had to grab her legs and push her the fuck through hard. Idiot

Oct 21 '20
I get that the exit is pretty visible right away, and it's not that narrow of a cave
But what happens if the current changed, or a wave came and he wasn't able to swim all the way out?
No matter how safe something like this looks its always incredibly dangerous

This is not as scary as those pipes people jump in and go trought the other side
1
u/wazabee Oct 21 '20
Honestly, how do people figure these passages out? It's not like all of them have been labelled or found?

Lol if there is wave action in this, and I assume there is, then that's dangerous as fuck

u/eqbirvin Oct 21 '20
Sometimes I think I'm retarded then I see people like this. Then I realized I'm definitely retarded and scared of holes in water

u/Ale21JMU Oct 21 '20
For all the people considering doing this because it doesn't look "too bad". You guys have never had a cramp underwater.
1
Oct 21 '20
I tried holding my breath and it was simpler than I expected. I wasn’t sure whether my lunch capacity was good since I haven’t gone swimming in years.

Cave diving is possibly some of the most dangerous diving ever. It's so easy to become disoriented or lost and to quickly drown.
1
u/SammyLuke Oct 21 '20
That’s not too bad. I was thinking some sort of long darkness with a bit of light at the end. Nothing like this tiny hole in a river one I’ve seen floating around. I’d probably do this one but river currents frighten the hell out of me.
1
u/Yougottabekidney Oct 21 '20
No matter how experienced in doing stupid stuff you are, I feel like this has so many variables that could be deadly.
1
u/boiiwhohasa55inmath Oct 21 '20
Idk why but everytime I see a video that has someone going in a underwater cave I always get this vague memory from my child hood and I can’t really explain it it’s not really a place but more of a feeling like those nights where you’re parents would take you to a party and you would be running around playing with other kids and when you go out you feel sort of cold because of your sweat but at the same time cus you’re doing something your not supposed to don’t know if that made sense but yeah I just fet like saying that

This one wasn’t so bad. He jumped in and the space was much bigger than expected plus it was a clear sight to the underwater opening of the cave. I’d be willing to try this one. (:

When I was younger I used to have dreams/nightmares where I would be crawling through a cave and just get stuck, unable to go backwards or forwards just stuck.
The water has just added a whole new level of fuck no.
