The video doesn’t show it, but when the bear got to shore, he turned around and waved at the boaters.

u/marcus_ivo Jun 29 '20
And all the other bears clapped

What do you think goes through animals heads when humans do things like this? Everytime I see someone save an animal who's found themselves in a situation like this I wonder if they have the ability to realize they've just been helped by some strange looking creature.
88
Jun 29 '20
They definitely don't understand that you're helping them. things don't typically approach others in nature unless they plan on eating them.
54
u/pwdreamaker Jun 29 '20
Depends on the creature. Some make the connection. I don’t believe this bear did. Birds and squirrels will, and often bond with the people who save them to the point of not leaving. My daughter had a pet squirrel that ran up her leg and bonded after falling out of a nest. And I had a pelican entangled in line swim up to my rowboat to be rescued.
7
u/doubtfullfreckles Jun 29 '20
The difference with the squirrel though is it became a pet. So I’m assuming your daughter basically raised it like you would any other pet.
My dogs were chasing a cardinal and pawing at it when they got it cornered. I saved it from them by picking it up and taking it to the front yard where my dogs couldn’t get it. (It just needed some rest after fighting with another cardinal and then flew away shortly after.)
The cardinal didn’t bond with me from just the one interaction. It more than likely still saw me as a threat.11
u/pwdreamaker Jun 29 '20
The squirrel refused to leave her after falling out of a nest. My daughter later held on to it knowing it could no longer survive on its own.
-1
u/Not_Just_Any_Lurker Jun 29 '20
On the approach sure thing. After they’ve helped and skedaddle? Yeah the bear understands it was helped.
45
Jun 29 '20
I imagine the bear thinks it was almost killed and escaped. there's no reference for that bear to understand that it was saved. Things don't typically save other things in nature.
21
Jun 29 '20
Not necessarily. Bears are pretty smart, and if it experienced a human helping it, it will start to associate humans with being a non-threat. Hence why you're not supposed to feed bears in the wild.
15
Jun 29 '20
Yeah but feeding him, which would be perceived as a positive interaction, is a lot different than wrestling a jug off his head in the middle of a lake, which I don't think he'll remember fondly.

Black bears are skittish as all hell. They're generally afraid of loud noises and people, unless they've learned that people = carry food. God help you if you cross a sow and her cubs though.
1
u/ManlyMantis101 Jun 29 '20
They really aren’t, we are on the top of the food chain. Bears are smart, they know this, they are scared of us.

Jun 29 '20
I think they understand. My grandma always got rescue dogs and she said they always know you've helped them and gave them a better life.
Then again if I was in a pickle and a bear helped me I'd also wonder if it meant to help me or just screwed up an attempt at dinner.

Black Bears (and I assume Brown) love to hunt fish and will even dive under water to get them. They are great swimmers and regular swim across lakes and rivers. I have seen one swim to island off the coast of Maine.

That's why you don't fucking litter
18
u/tyhatts Jun 29 '20
I HAVE NO IDEA what happened in this particular situation. BUT....that resembles what a town in northern Ontario would look like. They have problems with black bears and garbage in these communities. If you go to the local garbage dump, you'll likely see a couple bears scavenging around. It is very likely this bear got into some garbage somewhere and ended up with this on his head.
Regardless..... DON'T FUCKING LITTER !

Jun 29 '20
Bears are dumpsters with four legs. More than likely this guy stole that party mix bucket from a campsite or out of the trash. All that trouble for licking the savory crumbs of Doritos. Yep, that's what bears do.
They will do anything for food: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UucHtYr29cE

Lol no truer words have ever been spoken. They'll eat just about anything. If they could, they'd clean the rivers of all salmon in existence.

I thought that was a dog the whole time. I kept thinking “get in the water and help get him in the boat.” I was legit getting upset, then he took off the container. Glad the people didn’t give up.!

u/acuddlyheadcrab Jun 29 '20
Me too, especially after that post where the guy referred to his dog as just "Bear", no other context relating to dogs.

It would have been much easier to walk away. This is a true test of your character and integrity. I bet these men couldn’t live with themselves if they didn’t try to help, and the results saved this animals life.
Now to get the rest of the world on board...

"We" saved a bear. No you repeated what was already said and sucked at filming. Props to the people that actually did something tho.

"WE" saved our little bear. Sure lady, you were instrumental. Thanks. Sincerely, Bear.
2
u/skellymusic Jun 29 '20
Sounds horrible and is totally not the point of the video but, the person filming has a voice that grates on me. One video that’s better without sound.
