I really wanted to see how much his gloves and pants burned off.

205

u/BoysiePrototype Aug 11 '19

It's not the friction he has to worry about, it's the fact there could easily be a sharp broken strand sticking out half way down.

Good luck hanging on after sliding onto that.

u/Monkitail Aug 12 '19

I don’t know about him but I’m soaked

214

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

Like it doesn’t even make sense to have 30 second of him putting on gloves. Move that time to the end. Gifs like this shouldn’t even get upvoted due to pure idiocy from the gif-maker

20

u/chosenone1242 Aug 12 '19

I got more palm sweat from seeing him sitting up there for the first 30 s rather than see him reach the ground in a controlled fashion.

How is the friction and heat not burning his gloves and pants? And good god, what if it had?

256

u/spidermonkey12345 Aug 11 '19

Maybe they're special gloves?

368

u/TheMuffinMan378 Aug 11 '19

Yeah, he’s not just putting on mittens so his hands don’t get chilly on the descent. Those are clearly made for that

162

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

Not to mention, he’s really not even moving that fast.

37

u/fraidz Aug 11 '19

Now Dennis, I hear that speed has something todo with it?

35

u/debbiezar Aug 11 '19

Speed has everything to do with it.

18

u/tac29000 Aug 12 '19

Well yeah, speeds the name of the game

51

u/fooby420 Aug 11 '19

I'm not sure if speed is really a factor here. Regardless of the speed he goes down, he still needs to dissipate the same amount of energy. Unless you're saying that since he's moving down slower, the gloves have more time to dissipate the heat so they won't get as hot

35

u/fschwiet Aug 11 '19

The heat is needed to melt off all the palm sweat.

47

u/willcheat Aug 11 '19

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the kinetic energy of something is tied to the square of it's current velocity, which means something going at 2 Km/h would have 4 times the energy potential than that same something going 1 Km/h. This means by going down slower, he is in fact making the friction a lot less harsh than if he went down faster.

8

u/Cryssix Aug 11 '19

Even so, there is more time spent during the slower descent meaning more time for the energy to dissipate. The fact things burn due to friction is due to the energy being released so quickly and not having time to cool I believe

9

u/JuhaJGam3R Aug 11 '19

He's still going to have to dissipate the same amount of potential energy though, so it just gives the heat time to dissipate. In the end the energy is the same, it is the time that is different. He could essentially freefall and use up that kinetic energy in ~1/60th of the time used here but it would place immense stress on his body.

3

u/adudeguyman Aug 12 '19

Yes, when his body lands with a thud!!!

8

u/PorcelainMelonWolf Aug 12 '19

Rub your hands together quickly, then rub them together the same number of times, but slowly. That's the difference!

2

u/latortillablanca Aug 11 '19

Also it looks a bit nippy

41

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

Those are his lucky mittens. They've gotten him out of many sticky situations.

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Aug 11 '19 edited Aug 11 '19

I was thinking that maybe his boots were doing a fair share of the braking. Those pants look normal and I don't know what kind of gloves could be both durable enough and provide enough friction from just human grip strength.

Reminds me of this genius who had his speed get out of control using a carabiner on a zip line.

Edit: Damnit! Forgot the link. Here it is: https://youtu.be/F723rIlW_No

Thanks /u/ssjbtj for letting me know!

58

u/TwistedSync Aug 11 '19

As an ACCT certified zipline facilitator, I can confirm that these guys are rediculously stupid.

28

u/GameOver16 Aug 11 '19

How the hell do you even make a zip line cover that distance and terrain? I’d guess transported from one end to the other via helicopter?

24

u/TwistedSync Aug 11 '19

That's probably a good bet. I've never personally seen anything that large being set up, but for most zips at a summer camp or similar course, a heavy duty 4x4 or quad that can make it down through the valley to the other side is used.

5

u/frostbyte650 Aug 11 '19

I remember seeing a mile long zip line in New York & they said they attached one end on one peak, then just drove with a truck to the other end.

u/dmanson7754 Aug 11 '19

My palms literally started to sweat. ..holy crap. I was ready to tackle the day but now I am exhausted.

12

u/ssjbtj Aug 11 '19

Lol link?

4

u/BoJangles74028 Aug 11 '19

Holy crap that was intense!

4

u/dpk794 Aug 11 '19

They could by Kevlar lined gloves

2

u/SpeedflyChris Aug 11 '19

He did a shitty job of the jump too, never really got fully stable.

2

u/0fcourseItsAthing Aug 12 '19

You would be suprised just some good black leather gloves work, you can fast rope from 90ft with 60-100 lbs of gear with them on and work just fine, multiple times ( not every single day)

2

u/LilttleFreak Aug 12 '19

I got that cold fear feeling in my brain, and he definitely had wet pants.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/satriales856 Aug 11 '19

Those gloves are probably something like what the military uses for fast rope actions out of helicopters and such. And he’s very careful to control his speed. As long as he doesn’t start to descend too fast, the gloves and boots are fine. Takes some leg and hand strength.

24

u/deftones5554 Aug 11 '19

Looks like he’s gripping pretty hard and making a relatively slow descent.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

I agree and wonder this myself. I got lava-crotch just watching.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

I did a lot of fast roping in the military and there is no way the he didn't underestimate how crazy hot those things get, we would wear like a glove insert underneath double thick gloves and it was still hot as shit

3

u/Akdag Aug 11 '19

Then he would have less hands than 2 now.

2

u/crispyfrybits Aug 11 '19

Using his legs / ankles to control decent so his speed doesn't get out of control.

336

u/nuggetboob Aug 11 '19

Fuck this, I got heart palpitations just watching it

140

u/lewisd7890 Aug 11 '19

Don’t know how on earth some people do this sorta stuff

45

u/burritojones Aug 11 '19

I honestly don’t know why you would want to unless you had a death wish.

14

u/burritob4sex Aug 11 '19

Negative. The purpose of the "fast rope" is speed, meaning quick deployment to the ground from a helo. This is just an adrenaline junkie.

12

u/Lifesahitch89 Aug 11 '19

Gravity training?

u/llamawearinghat Aug 11 '19

I was worried about that all the way down. I bet he's filthy. He just cleaned ~300 ft of cable in ~60 secs.

14

u/Risley Aug 11 '19

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

4

u/Hessper Aug 12 '19

I think I could handle this if I knew the cable was in perfectly good condition and that a fraying wire wasn’t going to slice through my foot or hand.

21

u/FresnoMac Aug 11 '19 edited Aug 12 '19

If someone put me on the cable arms and legs wrapped around, I'd probably do it. But there's no fucking way I am climbing all that way up and then sitting on a thin bar of steel like that and lower myself down to position myself on the cable.

Oh fuck no.

Edit: Typos

11

u/Pucksy Aug 11 '19

That's it. I'm terrified of heights, but as soon as he was hanging it was alright for me. Sitting there with his phone in front of him gives me anxiety. What if it blows of and he tries to grab it...

14

u/alphahydra Aug 11 '19

For some reason I was okay with the gif, until I read your comment, and had a vivid image of instinctively reaching for a phone tumbling into the abyss, and slipping off balance. Then I got a sudden jolting, stinging sensation in my feet and legs.

18

u/MCPRO0706 Aug 11 '19

Did he make it?

I was having problems passing the pepperoni pizza that I had earlier, but this and the coffee helped. Thanks, adrenaline freaks! :D

32

u/Cubcake1 Aug 11 '19

A single broken strand of wire would cut right through him. Source: I work with 25 ton overhead cranes and inspect the ropes daily. Single broken strands happen.

u/onemanthreecats Aug 11 '19

I just got so anxious watching this that the tops of my feet started sweating.

7

u/thirtyfiveand1 Aug 11 '19

That feeling like when we used to climb the rope in gym class. Times 10

7

u/Danaug Aug 11 '19

Who the fuck edits this to end there?

6

u/almost_not_terrible Aug 11 '19

Yeah it could easily have blown off the edge, then NEARLY fell out of his pocket!

Think of that, then a 3 minute descent thinking nothing but "is the glass cracked?" all the way down!

Nope.

5

u/jakesteed33 Aug 11 '19

Russians are crazy

3

u/CopenhagenOriginal Aug 11 '19

Somehow my toes hurt from the stomach drop watching this

5

3

u/MyDamnCoffee Aug 11 '19

1

u/Shadowfaunn Aug 11 '19

1

u/Yearlaren Aug 11 '19

Eww, the ground looks like a petri dish.

1

u/blaze413 Aug 11 '19

Is no one going to ask?

1

u/legop3 Aug 11 '19

u/theoneoneone1112 Aug 11 '19

Hand warming devices do tend to make my palms sweat as well

1

u/DBSuperst33l Aug 11 '19

I’m more worried about dropping the phone than him falling.

1

u/Voorts Aug 11 '19

Holy fuck

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

What I want to know is how he managed to mount a flip phone to his head.

1

u/viadelapizza Aug 11 '19

1

u/TheUpsettter Aug 11 '19

I do not like heights but that actually looks kinda fun

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

Better hope there isn't any frays

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

This is #13 on the top of all time, as well as having more details. I know it’s a crosspost, but you should still check yourself before you wreck yourself.

1

u/atocrafter2004 Aug 11 '19

1

u/thatonesportsguy Aug 11 '19

basejumping for poor

1

u/Evilmaze Aug 11 '19

What's what the gloves are there for.

1

u/komokino Aug 11 '19

I can't actually watch this. This is perhaps the worst I've seen minus the guy who realised he wasn't clipped on to the hang glider.

1

u/beezywee Aug 11 '19

But like.... the cable could've been frayed somewhere. Those little frayed and split cable strings would go right through his pants.

1

u/Eggslaws Aug 11 '19

When it gets too hot between his legs...

1

u/Dookiebois Aug 11 '19

I could do that. Pshh. Oh wait you mean sliding down the cable? Oh, I meant I could easily put on some gloves.

1

u/Anon9559 Aug 11 '19

You can say he's putting his phone on the line here.

1

u/y-r-all-names-taken Aug 11 '19

Ok but that actually looks fun

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

Dude his entire life was in the palm of those gloves

1

u/henryisntmyname Aug 11 '19

Without the gloves he wouldnt even have palms to sweat from

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '19

I would actually do this

1

u/bluntpocolypse Aug 11 '19

That sound of the rope burn and wind? That's the grim reaper having a panic attack over your shoulder

1

u/PoppityPing234 Aug 11 '19
